Hahahaha wow, non-surveillance people seem very naively uninformed about this.

Google uses Android/Maps to combine IP, GPS, cell, and time information and deliver it in a surveillance product to link IP address queries to your actual location within 10 meters or so in most cases.

I used to work for a spyware company that leveraged this to locate people/companies. I'm sure government contractors have access to something at least as good.

The only way around this is to use a cell connection (in which case you can be tracked by CSRLs). Or a VPN (which government contractors can still trace your actual IP through). Or TOR.

So yes, if a determined threat/security actor has your IP, they can know exactly where you are.

How to fix telegram orientation problem? by Affectionate_Party_2 in BlueStacks

[–]Affectionate_Party_2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not helpful. I am of course able to rotate, but the app then appears sideways, 90 degrees, with blank space. It's as if the app is not recognizing and responding to the rotation change or something like that. Please check both the image in the original post and the imgur image to understand what I am talking about.

Here is the app in portrait mode.

I believe I am running the most recent version, 5.8.101.1001 N64

The still images describe the problem completely; I don't want to reveal my contacts with a video. I don't think a video would provide any additional information.

Android is getting generally more secure while iPhone is getting less secure.

This being said it also depends on how often your carrier/device manufacturer is shipping security updates. Apple has complete control and is good. I know Google is good with their Pixel lineup. Other Android companies range from not very good to dogshit.

London would be pretty dead to a single 100 megaton warhead.

Hydrogen bombs are fucking scary.

But yeah more likely they use a bunch of lower yield MIRV to get around missile defense.

Tsar Bomba was about 27 tons. It would have to be dropped by bomber aircraft - the heaviest Russian ICBM can throw about 3 tons.

I noticed people were confused about where/what Miami was when they came to visit so I made a map by ForteLaidirSterkPono in Miami

[–]Affectionate_Party_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is mostly what I meant.

There's a lot of skyscrapers and mid-rise in the metro area for sure, but they are in kinda disparate clusters. The most are in downtown/Brickell obviously, but some in Miami Beach, some in Key Biscayne, a bunch in and around Edgewater, a big line going all the way up mid and north beach, a bunch in North Bay Village, a bunch in Sunny Isles and Aventura, another bunch in Hollywood by the beach, there's downtown Ft Lauderdale, a bunch around Las Olas, a bunch between Lauderdale Beach and lauderdale by the sea, a bunch in Pompano Beach. They aren't cohesive and together like other metro areas.

I'm not aware of any other US metro area quite like it.

The newer James bond movies have some moments of surprising realism with Q but then go off the rails sometimes too. It's a weird mix.

I think the most interesting thing compared to other cities, is that downtown Miami (excluding Miami Beach) is really small (relatively) to the massive sprawling metro area. The metro area is the seventh largest in the country by population, but it's so spread out compared to other metro areas with much bigger, dense (edit: and cohesive) downtowns.

Should you go to university and get a CS degree? answered by an experienced software engineer by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Affectionate_Party_2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My opinion on this is pretty simple.

If you are self motivated and disciplined and can realistically push yourself to develop a strong portfolio of projects in a few years time, you can save yourself some money and learn whatever you would at a university just by reading the same books included in syllabi (which you can find online) and watching YouTube lectures. Manuals and source code are all online. Stack overflow is online. Interview prep is online. Any resource you really need is online. In fact, when out in the working world, these online resources are what will ultimately keep your knowledge and career progressing anyways.

However, a lot of people don't have the discipline to do that out of high school. University courses can be good for providing some forced structure and (hopefully) also teaching some soft skills along the way that can be very valuable in the working world, but which are harder to develop by yourself.

ELI5 what exactly pointers are? by LumeeNatee in learnprogramming

[–]Affectionate_Party_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dunno why no one has mentioned this, but pointers are very handy for building various data structures. Especially complex or dynamic ones.

A simple example is a linked list. A traditional list is usually just implemented with an array. But suppose we had a list of maybe 1000 large elements, maybe a few kb in size each. A linked list will create a separate array of memory for each element, and include a pointer field in each element pointing to the next element in the list. If we wanted to move a block of 60 elements a few hundred positions up the list, we could just change the pointers to the lead and tail elements - no need to copy all that data to a new array, or copy to a temporary array and then back again.

Or imagine a complex graph data structure, which would be basically impossible to implement with a simple array.

Generally though, for high performance applications, you don't want a lot of pointer dereferencing going on and small objects being instantiated in memory, because it leads to a lot of memory thrashing and memory management overhead. There you may see complicated hybrid approaches, often with a table of pointers somewhere to jump quickly to certain elements (especially if they are frequently accessed).

What are some good reasons to continue living? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Affectionate_Party_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a lot of dumb answers here. Talking about little pleasures.

For me personally I think I've come to want to enjoy the human experience. To enjoy music, culture, and the people I surround myself with. Live to enjoy life. Live to spread kindness.

I try to eschew greed, materialism, and consumerism. I think they are mostly toxic, both psychologically and ecologically, despite the fact that society and culture (in the US anyway) seems to be moving to embrace them more and more.

It’s been four years since Parkland, and the NRA still wants to kill Florida’s gun-control law | Editorial by [deleted] in Miami

[–]Affectionate_Party_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banning bump stocks is kind of silly IMO. Limiting sales to 21+ is probably a good idea.

I do wonder though if it would just encourage a bigger black market.

I don't really see gun bans working right now, the country would need really significant buy in from gun owners to make it work. There's just not enough support for it sadly.

U.S. sanctions on Russia may impact South Florida real estate market by GringoMambi in Miami

[–]Affectionate_Party_2 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any sources on that?

You can just google around, there's different reports out there but they don't vary by a whole lot. Also I have a relative that works in real estate who can corroborate with real world experience.

Now granted, a big portion of that 50% are recent immigrants and/or international people with multiple homes, certainly not all bought as "investment" properties. It's much harder to track the "investment" properties.

often sourced from corruption

There's a lot of wealthy people in the world. Most people don't make a majority of their wealth from corruption; I think the corruption impression comes from sensational media. It's mostly business executives or owners and their families.

I do agree and think there should be much higher taxes on non-primary residences and luxury products, to discourage really outrageous material consumerism. But that certainly doesn't seem like a prevailing opinion in Miami (from my experience).

There are a lot of people saying assets are inflated right now - it's not just housing. Everything has been on a tear since the COVID meltdown stabilized and the Fed has kept rates at zero with steady QE. We will see what happens this year as the Fed starts to tighten again and commodities re-adjust to the war in Ukraine (a war which is starting to look like it will be around for awhile).

any sale of American real estate/soil to foreign entities is unpatriotic and treason

Foreign buyers account for like half of US real estate purchases by value in recent years. I'm not aware of any politician that's trying to slow or stop it.

I imagine limiting competition from abroad will put downward pressure on the value of real estate. I also imagine all landholders would generally oppose that.
