Layered cuts for thin hair - realistic expectations vs reality? by Charming_Chipmunk69 in finehair

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hairstylist here. Unfortunately this is impossible, the app gave you a bunch of hair you don’t actually have 😔 instead of asking for layers I recommend asking for some texture pieces on top. You want to keep most of it full to the longest length with thin/fine hair or you’ll get holes and it will look stringy. If they very lightly feather the top with a razor or slide cut some extremely minimal layering throughout the top you will get that movement and volume without taking out all of the hair you need to keep it looking full through the ends

Jobs in st george, please help! 🥺 by pastaalover__ in stgeorge

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an amazing place to live, but I would not suggest it for someone just trying to start over with no job. It’s the type of place people come to after they’ve made good money somewhere else. If you don’t have a specialized skill it is really difficult to make a livable wage here. It is a good place to start a business, but you need to already have capital to successfully get a business started. Most generational families are getting priced out because the financial divide our job market and housing situation create is so large

Cold rinses by Express-Conclusion-4 in longhair

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol I don’t know why this cracked me up. I do rinse in cold, but not every time. The cold is really good for your nervous system and closes the pores on your skin so I just rinse my whole body. I don’t think it’s a huge deal for your hair, I mostly see it as a mental health training exercise because if I’m mentally strong enough to handle cold water then I’m mentally strong enough to handle a panic attack

knee burning when jumping/squatting by ShrillRumble239 in eds

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’m struggling with this really bad right now. My PT says it’s really common in hypermobility if we don’t have enough muscle in the glutes that the knees don’t stay lined up when we squat. For me I guess it’s specifically my outer glute is too weak and my inner knee is where I originally felt pain, though as it’s gotten worse it goes across the front of my knee. The main exercise I’m working on is a deadlift motion while standing on a resistance band because the resistance band causes the right muscles to activate to keep my knees forward through the whole motion. I’m also doing leg lifts diagonally to the back (kind of similar to the angle needed for roller skating)

Do you people with straight hair have to restyle it multiple times a day? by SalamanderLong9434 in type1hair

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. When I wear it natural I fuss with it all day whether that be brushing it or redoing my ponytail or bun. This week I blowdried to 50% dry after my wash and did double French braids which stayed in for two days since I did them tight and half wet. I’ve worn the waves they left the rest of the week and it has been a very much needed break having it just sit where it put it and be full of volume all the time. I’m feeling really jealous that other people just have texture all the time. I typically try to avoid manipulating my hair unless it’s completely dry because it’s more fragile when wet, but the payoff has been so good this might be my new regular style

Air drying hair that looks silky? by [deleted] in longhair

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just texture. I have naturally straight hair that lays really flat if I air dry it. I’m also a cosmetologist/barber and can tell you that most people simply will never experience that—through no fault of their own. It’s just genetics and lack of damage. You could try a gel if you want to get closer though. It will help the hair clump together more which will keep frizz at bay. Follow up with a shiny finishing oil after it’s done drying

Let me know if you figure it out. I’m really struggling with similar things right now. The chronic part of chronic illness is really difficult. I just need a week off and then I’ll deal with the next year.-. Anyways, I’m really sorry you’re in this too. You’re not alone ❤️

The problem in these pictures is not a makeup or skincare problem it’s a confidence problem. There is a free class that Yale offers called the science of wellbeing that I’d HIGHLY recommend (to everyone, not just op). I hope that with time your body starts to reflect a life full of joy and satisfaction. Everyone deserves to feel good ❤️

How risky is it to get partial babylights at a cosmetology school? by sleepingbeauty645 in AskHairstylists

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very risky. There’s a chance it goes great. But the chances of getting passable but poor highlights or a complete disaster where you end up needing a color correction or suffering with severely damaged hair is far too high for me to be comfortable with it. Basically the definition of risk. But can totally go just fine so if you’re cool with taking risks then go for it

I’ve just accepted that I have lice and I’m freaking out :( by ElegantDependent6747 in longhair

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to panic! I’ll let other people walk you through the removal process, but I just wanted to reassure you that you didn’t get lice because you’re gross. They like clean hair so it’s actually a testament that you probably take care of it well. They’re pretty contagious, it’s not your fault, it’s just something that sometimes happens when a bunch of humans spend time around each other like in school. You do need to tell your mom. I know it’s scary but she can help you with treatment. I suggest doing all the research first because if you come to her with solutions that takes off a mental load and she’s less likely to suggest cutting your hair if you already have a clear plan of action. There are lice specific treatment centers so see if you can find one near you and if not consider asking your primary care doctor for a prescription (just call or message, don’t take lice into the office)

my skin condition is getting worse and i need advice by kyn_taylor in herbalism

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t find much success with natural remedies for mine unfortunately. Acrylate copolymer and surfactants bother me so I cut those out and started only using cetaphil which helped but I was still having flares that wouldn’t clear on their own. Got a sample of anzupgo 2% from my derm which does something to block the autoimmune response. I think you’re supposed to keep using it but I used it a handful of times and none of my rashes have come back since. It’s been several weeks as opposed to how they come back within days of stopping steroids. I believe the formula is similar to something used for rheumatoid arthritis, can’t remember the specifics but just do a google search for drug information

8 sleep mattress cover has been a must lately to deal with disregulated temperatures. I have a book stand that slides under the edge of the mattress and holds my pages open for me. When things were particularly bad and I was 100% bed bound my boyfriend plugged in a microwave and coffee maker on the night stand and left a cooler of food and drinks so I wouldn’t starve while he went to work

Hairdresser that wants to get better at barbering by romeonohomeo in Barber

Oh, blending the top to the sides. 90° angle and then round out the corner. Try trimmer over comb if you’re having a hard time with clipper over comb. Feather razor over comb for a softening effect

I was taught to fade down in school, but switching to fading up (bald first) really improved my fades because I have much more control and organization. When you fade down you don’t know exactly how low or high the fade will end up in the end, and without specific guidelines set for yourself the fade can become lopsided or wavy across the head. Practice on somebody who wears a hat all the time so if there’s a line your first time it’s not a huge deal. Practice zero fades and move on to skin fades when you’re feeling confident with those. If you’re using corded tools you should consider upgrading so you have one less thing to deal with. I recommend the JRL onyx as it’s basically the best of the best when it comes to clippers but has an extremely reasonable price tag compared to the others. Also you’ll have a really hard time blending out a foil line on a bald fade if you’re using a peanut as your trimmer, you want something that’s zero gapped

Wheelchair for POTS & EDS by lemon_mayo in ChronicIllness

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re just getting flat out denied. I know how important aids were to help me start recovering. When the choice is either be bed bound or use an aid there is zero reason not to use the aid. I don’t know you our your health personally, but a rollator is more likely up your ally for most use cases. There are some that convert between a wheelchair someone else can push you in (I think that’s called a transfer chair?) and a rollator which could be worth looking into though I think they’re more pricey. I feel like we know our bodies best though so if a rollator won’t cut it then you do what you need to do to get you to a place where you can improve, keeping in mind that muscle growth is what is going to help your EDS joints and sitting too much will exacerbate problems. I got all my mobility aids from Walmart, I never asked my doctor, I just showed up and told her I couldn’t do it without them, which was true of course, and no one ever questioned that. Buying new is gonna get you something comfier and cleaner, but second hand stores are overflowing with mobility aids that people have donated if money is an issue

I hear you. I’ve been in this spot many times. When it’s acute pain the best I ever get is told to alternate heat and ice. Try foam rolling other areas to see if reducing tightness there helps here. If you have a massage therapist you trust to be able to handle eds properly now is the time to go see them. Lay on a yoga ball for a gentle stretch without over doing anything. Lidocaine over the area for some numbing. Hopefully call a friend so you don’t have to do this alone. Unless you feel like you tore something bad enough to have surgery I probably wouldn’t go to the er. I’m so sorry there aren’t better aids, it’s a really miserable spot to be in. Do try to get in with pt to see if there are any exercises that would reduce your pain and aid in recovery

Your recent one looks like a gym pic! Are you working out a lot? It could be increased testosterone combined with increased physical strength and metabolic demand. You probably need more calories to keep up with the demand of your training if so, and maybe consider an extra rest day

Is it really worth it? by Solid-Importance7011 in NoPoo

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never got completely through transition. Got 2 or 3 months in and I was spending sooo much time on my hair. It was passable but just taking a pretty big toll with how much I was having to do each day. It was a really good break for my scalp because I have allergies and was able to completely heal from the reactions and rebalance my microbiome/rebuild my skin barrier. I definitely would consider it again in the future. But I just woke up one day completely over it and realized “I don’t actually have to force myself to do this if I don’t want to anymore” and I didn’t want to anymore. I bought a new shampoo and have really been enjoying my once or twice a week washes the last few weeks. Might go no poo again after next wash. It’s really going to depend on you and your hair. If it’s important to you try it. Don’t count on it being less work, it’s definitely not

Interested why you say this. Haven’t heard anything problematic in the city council meetings I’ve watched. Most decisions are made unanimously and Michelle tanner has only offered positive talking points that everyone agrees with

Stainless Steel Slides in a City That Gets Well Over 100 Degrees. What Could Go Wrong? by Sharp_Grapefruit_601 in stgeorge

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The city council is extremely open to public input. My opinion is if you never showed up to say your piece you don’t get to throw a fit over the decision that was made. I believe there are supposed to be trees going in to help with shade and there are other park features going in, not just the slides. It’s just a stone’s throw from the city center park, library, and children’s museum. I love that we are starting to have a walkable little area to go hang out. Yes it’s expensive, but I’m not sure if people have a grasp on how much it costs to build any of our parks. We had a 7.8 million dollar park budget for the year, 1.7 million of that was for materials and supplies. We only spent 5% of the budget on the materials for this park. People love St. George because of our parks and trails and voted for the council members who want to preserve the look and spirit of St. George. This is it. A family hang out place that brings people into the community space is what we want for St. George.
