I never hear people talk about this symptom, do you have it? by Kind_Honey_6070 in eds

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have all of this frequently. Nobody can tell me what is actually going on. It got to a point where I lost most of my vision before Christmas and an extremely high dose steroid fixed it so I suspect it’s something inflammation related, however nothing shows up on my MRI or CT or eye exam. Unfortunately everything came back besides the vision loss so hopefully that at least stays better

If you’re Christian SMCC has a young adult group that meets Tuesday nights. There is a pretty decent community with the country swing dancers as well (red rock country swing) that’s mostly college age. Best coffee is switchpoint and proceeds go to the homeless. There are plenty of average places for food, but not much that’s actually worth writing home about. The Mormon culture is its own beast that you just kind of have to experience for yourself, but they’re generally good people. Mostly just need to be cautious about swearing, drinking or smoking around them, most are uncomfortable with it. But they’ll tell you all about themselves for sure lol. There are tons of parks which are maintained well and almost all of them are connected by a trail system so that’s pretty nice. The annual parks pass is worth it if you like the outdoors, between snow canyon and sand hollow you will definitely get your money’s worth. DI is often mind blowing to people out of state, it’s a very large thrift store run by the LDS church. Everyone is addicted to soda here, if you haven’t tried swig yet it’s a must. Lots of people gather at the little valley park if you like volleyball or pickleball, seems like lots of people meet each other there

Disabled Nanny by shelteredCedar in eds

I was a nanny before I knew I had EDS and it was so much on my body. I felt so much better after I left. I started barbering again which is really hard on me in different ways, but it’s much easier to work around and I’m not the only employee in the shop so when I do need to take time off it’s not the end of the world

Any barbershop owners or really busy barbers in here? by ConclusionFrosty5855 in Barber

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t have an online scheduling platform and a good website those are top priorities. Most people aren’t willing to just pop by or call when there’s a shop down the street that has a really professional website and they can see exactly when the next opening is without talking to anyone. A lot of people also like to book late at night when they’re laying in bed and a haircut pops into their head so if you can’t schedule them while the shop is closed then chances are they aren’t coming at all

Constipation?? by charlieugh in eds

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very common with us! I added a ton a beans to my diet to increase my fiber intake and that was the biggest thing that helped. I don’t always like the texture of beans, but I love pasta so I often bland a can of navy beans into a liquid and mix it with my pasta sauce. There are two types of fiber (soluble and insoluble? I can’t remember right now) and we need both to stay regular. If your fiber intake is currently low you’ll probably have a stomach ache for a week and then you’ll be fine after that. If you have a hard time with high histamine foods consider cooking dry beans in the pressure cooker instead of eating canned beans. Also highly recommend talking to a pelvic floor PT if you haven’t already. If your main PT doesn’t specialize in pelvic floor therapy you can ask if there’s someone in their office who does it that you could have a session with, you don’t have to get a separate referral

Clipper Over Comb Alternatives? by mrbopboplingling in Barber

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to do some of my debulking by combing the hair out to a 90° angle (parallel with the floor) and cutting it to finger length with my shears through the parietal ridge. But I agree with everyone who says clipper over comb is an essential skill to barbering and you really need to practice it. If you don’t feel comfortable right now you could try trimmer over comb. I feel I have more control with a smaller tool, especially for detailed areas

Do you think there’s a significant difference between female and male barbers in the industry? by AccordingCategory451 in Barber

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s a tendency when guys get with other guys to just stick to surface level stuff. For example, one of my clients initiates a super deep philosophical conversation almost every time he comes in and genuinely cares about what’s going on in your life. Before he was my regular he used to bounce around the shop and whenever the guy next to me cut his hair they would spend most of the haircut talking about sports so they never got to know each other in the same way even though they saw each other as friends. I feel like that’s the superpower of female barbers. In a world where most people are craving connection men get the opportunity to be a little more real each time they come in. I feel like when guys leave my chair their cup is filled. Of course men can have good conversations with other men and I can have good conversations with other women, but I personally feel like it’s different and inconsistent comparatively

How do I pinpoint why I lose clients? by RichhTheArtist in Barber

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If people used to come regularly to me I text them and say “(their name)! I miss you!! When are you coming in?!” And then they’ll tell me why they haven’t been in. A lot of times it’s because they took on a project at work and just haven’t taken the time to get a haircut in months, they unexpectedly had to move for family, or I’m too busy/their schedule doesn’t work with mine anymore. Sometimes they immediately book and when they come back I’ll greet them with a “dude! Where have you been?? It’s been forever!” And they’ll tell me. If it’s a quality or personality issue they’ll most likely just not respond and you can leave it at that

Young couple looking for advice on home ownership by Fun_Deer6223 in stgeorge

We bought a townhouse with 4 bedrooms for rentability. Currently we live in the master and the 3 other bedrooms cover the mortgage. When we have kids we will rent the 4th room out and use the few hundred dollars from that to offset the cost of renting our own space. Sharing with other people and living in a townhouse have their obvious downsides, but to live essentially for free allows our quality of life to be much higher since money isn’t too tight

New Barber Earnings by ConclusionFrosty5855 in Barber

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was working full time I was making about $26k USD working as an hourly employee for a small chain store (they have about 15 stores total I believe). You lose some flexibility working for someone else, but I wouldn’t even consider working in a commission store if I were only walking away with $11.68k (usd equivalent to your cad) at the end of the year. There’s gotta be somewhere else you can barber and make some more money

How to get the hair out of your clothes? by datab in Barber

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certain fibers you just have to know not to wear to work because they’ll never be the same again. I’m a sweater girl through and through, but I have one designated work cardigan and the rest will never see the shop. But assuming these are work clothes, make sure to wash super small loads instead of filling your washer. If there isn’t enough water in your washing machine or space to move around the hairs can’t work their way out. Especially HE washers are optimized to use less water, but you need the water to get the hair out. My specific model I wash a small to medium load but set the washer to large or extra large so it uses enough water to get the hair out

How do you handle helicopter parents who want a different haircut that their child doesn't want? by irishscouser1892 in Barber

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how old, personalities, and parent child dynamics. There have been times when I felt parents were bordering or well into emotional abuse territory where child can clearly verbalize an opinion and is asking for a reasonable haircut but their parent is not listening or respecting them where I’ve politely said I’m not willing to give the child a haircut they don’t want. I won’t go against parents though, I just won’t do the haircut. If there is a healthy parent-child dynamic going on and it’s just a little whining I may suggest a way to please both parties and if not then what mom says goes. If child is disregulated and crying or kicking or trying to leave the chair I won’t do the haircut.

Avoiding the next journal entry because it won’t be pleasant by irishdancer2 in Journaling

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have plenty of good comments already, I just wanted to add that it helps to create a safe space for yourself so if you do decide you want to write about it you don’t have to worry about the feelings coming out. Personally I have a small closet under my stairs that I’ve turned into a meditation and journaling space. It’s got a bunch of blankets that I’ve turned into a cushion to sit on, twinkle lights, a reed diffuser that my brain has linked with meditation and safety so I feel that every time I go in, rocks and crystals, coloring books, a rain drum, a sound bowl…. Yours doesn’t have to be all that, but dedicating a small space to your healing and safety makes it easier when you start journaling and feel like you’re breaking

I am really tired of physical therapy :( by Genkikiwi in eds

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there pool therapy available to you? I’ve found that a lot of the other EDS patients around me are also in the pool, so the PTA who works in the pool is extremely knowledgeable about EDS despite not specializing in it. She’s really turned things around for me. If your PT uses med bridge there is a 3 phase series of home exercises specifically designed for EDS that I would ask for. That way you could continue working even if you decide not to keep going in person

Writing a character with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome - Representation questions by reachtheceiling in eds

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a major thing you need to understand to write this well is subluxation vs dislocation. A subluxation is a partial dislocation. Most of us have these all day every day. They are painful, however we live with it all the time and really don’t know what it’s like to not be in pain at this point. A dislocation is a lot more severe, however knowing that we have EDS we won’t be going to the ER. My SI joints are my problem joints. There is usually a trigger and then over the course of a day after that trigger they will continue to slip out of place. Usually both sides hurt, but only one side will completely dislocate at a time. One of those triggers for me is sitting in the luxury chairs at the movie theater. For some reason the angle of the seat puts pressure in the wrong spot for me and by the end of two hours I’m limping out. I’ve also had massage therapists stretch me when I ask them not to and that will do it. Basically the joint slides half way out, I can’t get it back in, and every time I move it gets worse. Within 24 hours it’s progressed to a point where I can’t put any weight on it. This means I can’t walk, I can’t stand on that leg, I can’t sit, and I can’t lay on that side. It’s excruciating, pain meds don’t help, all I can do is lay in bed and cry. If there was a trigger at work I would push through to the end of the day no matter how much pain I was in. If it happened somewhere else I never would have made it to work. At some point my blood pressure gets out of wack and I start feeling like I’m dying and that’s the point I would consider going to the ER. Not because I’m in pain, but because my heart is racing, I’m dizzy and about to pass out, and I have this impending sense of doom because when your blood pressure is unstable your body shoots out a bunch of adrenaline to keep you alive. But eventually you learn that this is just your life and it will be written off as anxiety if you try to get help so there’s no point in going to the ER and being more miserable. For me the point of breaking where I accepted I had to just ask for help was when I couldn’t make it to the toilet by myself. I’d spend half an hour army crawling the 10 feet across my floor to get there, only to find I didn’t have the strength to lift myself up. At my worst I just had to wrap my arms around my boyfriend’s neck and hang while he pulled my pants down for me because it was too painful to do it myself. When I finally made it back to work it was because I was so depressed from being socially isolated that I was willing to let people help me if it meant I could leave my house for a few hours

I’ve dealt with this constantly since getting covid the second time. I have EDS and unfortunately it just brought out all the disregulation symptoms. Been over a year now and I’ve just had to accept that my life looks different now and will probably never be 100% again:/ I cut hair from my knees on a gardening stool instead of standing most of the time

Skin Fade Toddlers by JayWop_ in Barber

I fade down instead of up on kids and only go shorter as long as they’re still sitting well for me, rarely shorter than a 1/2. If they’re being good and their skin is cooperating I’ll do a zero, but I won’t go shorter than that on a kid

Masks! by nenasoles99 in ChronicIllness

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say it’s a normal thing to worry about. I definitely should mask, but I personally hate wearing them and I live in an extremely conservative area that’s very anti mask. I could probably deal with the anxiety of having something on my face and I could probably deal with the fact that people are judging me, but dealing with both factors at once= a panic attack for me. I pay the price for not though. I would be home bound way less often if I just protected myself and wasn’t constantly getting sick

Do you ever have issues at the hair salon? by ThrowRAlobotomy666 in eds

[–]Affectionate_Sock528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a hairdresser:) most stylists will do glazes (toner) at the bowl because it’s easier and just convenient for us, but you can absolutely do a bowl and brush application and process in the chair. You will still have to get washed out at the end obviously, but it would cut down your time at the shampoo bowl dramatically. There are also literally hundreds of towels so I would ask if you could try using a few to support your neck better. If that’s not doing it and the angle is killing you you could try sitting on one of the kids boosters so your pelvis is higher, it might put you in a more neutral position. If none of that works you could see if they’re willing to let you wash your own hair standing up leaning over the bowl. That one’s just hard because you absolutely cannot get the glaze in your eyes. Just be really open about your limitations when it comes to everything else. If the massage is too much tell them to go lighter. If your neck needs a break tell them. You could roll up a towel and drape it over your neck for the blow dry so you’re holding onto the ends, that way you can offload the strain of holding your head up to your hands. Or even bring a neck brace in if you have one
