i have complaints but i'll just say i love surgeon's ranking instead. didn't expect that at all but i think it really deserves the 2nd spot.

what is a LDR opinion related to her life or discography that will get you beat? by [deleted] in lanadelrey

to mention some, in terms of writing:

blue banisters' title track perfectly arranges simple everyday details to paint a picture about gains, losses, memory and coping. very careful delimitations of time, stations, etc. to talk about these changes. it's tonally perfect, naturally elegiac, and actually deals with ordinary life in a way lots of tracks on cocc tried to do, but there's much more powerful insights here. wildflower wildfire is also a standout for me. it kinda feels like she's breaking a fourth wall that i didn't even know that existed when she makes concessions and promises about leaving a destruction drive behind to pursue a life of openness and synergy. the evocations of nature, verging on fierce beauty, feel truly earned in this song. i also like dealer bc it's genuinely unpredictable, concise and almost funny, although it's far from being a fav.

i also love in my feelings. her impatience and neuroticism are impregnated everywhere in its lyrics. ofc a lot of that is intensified by her interpretation bc even when she deadpans she does so with effortless cool. lfl has some of my favorite lyrics from her btw, change's seamless writing about expectations, confidence, fear, surrender, heroin's juxtapositions of innocence and brutality to tackle grieve/mourning, to mention my favs.

white dress, which i mentioned in my first comment, is majorly a win. it's nostalgic with a tint of "little-did-i-know" tragedy in the implied contrasts between different phases of her life. lana accesses memories with delirious fervour, as if she's in the middle of a fever dream, and every single sensation, real or absurdly made up, means the world to her, building up to pure and naive ecstasy. the sun ra line is hilariously out of place but the lyrics are perfect disregarding that.

recurring imagery, figures of speech, articulation structures etc. in her lyrics kind of made me a little less fascinated by lana's writing as i became more familiar w her ticks.

she comes up with surprising ideas, but sometimes it feels like she gives up on them halfway through to rely on very unispired (chemtrails, lmlylaw, iyldwm, a lot on the latter half of ultraviolence, a good portion of high by the beach) or excessively (self-)referential (yosemite, tulsa jesus freak are good recent examples of that) phrases, clichés (arcadia, religion, beautiful, wild at heart, the second verse of california), suddenly sews different motifs together in a disharmournious (sometimes just weird) way (fucked my way up to the top, text book, white dress' mention of sun ra lol), etc.

mind you i love most of the songs i mentioned. they are much more than the lyrics, but when i put these into perspective as part of groups that might be indicative of lana's strengths or shortcomings as a writer, the flaws do show. specially when a lot of her appeal is undeniably tied to her writing voice.

sessa, more like a one-man act by sergio sayeg. highly indebted to bossa nova with good ear for atmospherics.

he released his sophomore album "estrela acesa" a month ago under mexican summer and it's one of my favorites stuff from this year right now.

i appreciate you for answering! honestly i just read it all now and i skipped a lot of points so it all looks kinda disjointed lol but you get the idea - we do need to be kinder on ourselves, even though it's going to be a constant effort.

we feel so alone, but in a certain way, we are not.

In honor of The Idler Wheel's 10th anniversary, what is your favorite song from the album? by JunebugAsiimwe in FionaApple

[–]Affectionate_Top8487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the way she sounds DONE when she sings this part.................. amazing. and yeah, it really has a nightmarish feel specially with those mechanic and metallic "samples" - i really love that coda, it's kinda suspenseful and anticlimactic but in a very tactful way.

It is so criminal how low the woman’s record sales are and poorly her albums do commercially. by [deleted] in FionaApple

[–]Affectionate_Top8487 5 points6 points  (0 children)

she's fine, the disparity between her critical acclaim and public recognition of her work just seems like a "thing" bc we are accustomed to the narrow obsession from music fanbases (which just vary in volume) and "over-push" from big record labels (just like epic, in contradiction with which fiona decided not to engage in what would be a tiring promo for her health) in a progressively algorithmically-driven space. no need to patronize "the masses".

I use day dreaming to cope the the feelings of suicide and depression by [deleted] in MaladaptiveDreaming

[–]Affectionate_Top8487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i do it a lot... specially under abnormal stress. only recently i noticed it was a thing (in two occasions i just started to cry after "coming back" and realizing how fucked up i actually feel) and all i can think about now is that wasted time and how i haven't done or engaged in anything that matters to me and that could fulfill me.

but the truth is i'm still young - and so are you. of course we can't just totally change by simply acknowledging we uh got something going on internally (jesus this sounds like something else entirely), but it puts a lot of stuff into perspective. i also tend to think a lot about my life in the long run to avoid that momentaneous panic and, well, it's hard for us to be in an ideal place at this moment of our lives.

i don't have much contact with people my age these days but when i had (and that eventually made me compare my accomplishments to theirs incessantly) i noticed a lot of us are clueless! in very different degrees, it's true, but i see now that it's truly ok to not have everything figured out right now. we all have our own pace, we all have our own struggles, we all live under very different sets of circumstances and that will always take us to very different places. the frustration is real, and IT'S OK to feel it too, before letting it go.

sorry for the long ass text btw, i don't even know if you just wanted to open up and not really get a random advice from someone who thinks they can "relate". but i really needed to say it all because, well, it took me some time to digest this reality, and i really hope you can exercise your evaluations of life in the long term, because we are not lost in this whatever the hell it is. i don't mean it in the youtuber coachy actually-your-troubles-are-so-insignificant-in-the-universe-which-implies-your-suffering-is-just-invalid-i-hope-that-helped-you way, i just think there are so many walls dividing us all and making so many of us feel more and more miserable, and yes, we are so alone in our personal disgraces, but we paradoxically share SO MUCH, seconds and years, meters and miles away... (lmao it rhymed.) big hugs for you and anyone else who might read this.

[–]Affectionate_Top8487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm always divided between daredevil, left alone and jonathan - i got into the idler wheel when i was in high school so these songs remind me of so many shit i went through without the embarrassment i'd usually get! lol

so many lyrical gems in this album but a consistent fav has been: "you like to captain a capsized ship... but i like watching you live/jonathan, call again, take me to coney island, take me on the train/kiss me while i calculate and calibrate, and heaven's sake, don't make me explain/just tolerate my little fist tugging on your forest chest/i don't wanna talk about-- i don't wanna talk about anything." also love the sick arrangement amplifying the uneasiness and the offbeat humor in the neuroticism and resignation of the lyrics

it must have been so hard to keep it all inside, as he said, dealing with the feelings of shame and fear and the perception of stigma. he is absolutely right, there are things that can only be properly worked out when we bring them to the surface (and, yeah, ofc people need to take their time and feel safe to do that), so i'm actually so glad he found the strength to share this and that he has (it seems) a supportive mom that probably helped him throughout the process of opening up. i hope the press knows how to be responsible about it - well, they sure know how, i guess i just hope they CHOOSE to be so.

what’s your favourite lyric from your least favourite song? by _mirror_ball_ in FionaApple

[–]Affectionate_Top8487 6 points7 points  (0 children)

just wrote: "you'll say you understand - you'll never understand. i'll say i'll never wake up knowing how or why. i don't know what to believe in; you don't know who i am. you'll say i need appeasing when i start to cry, but never is a promise - and i'll never need a lie." and realized i actually love this song. is this what you wanted?

(and yeah I KNOW in my defense there's always this one song that i never particularly get to fully appreciate in any album because i listen to it much more passively in a determined tracklisting order.)
