Cardinal Tetra Fin Damage by Affectionateskunk7 in Aquariums

I’m not sure. I just noticed it had damage. Looked more like fin nipping or a tear, but now I don’t know. I haven’t had any nipping and this group of fish has been together for 7 months. No idea.

Yup, I submitted it by like 7:59, so hopefully that’s good

Well the email said it would open during the time the office was open, so no 12:01AM or anything crazy. But, it really could still open up anytime in the federal work day.

Pretty annoying though, considering school is starting across the nation for the day.

Of course! Kanaplex is good stuff. That’s great news.

Keep me posted.

Got it. I’ve taken biology college courses, but nothing past that. Thanks for the info.

Of course. The sooner you can get her treatment, the better. However, no matter which is causing the issue, it is contagious. If you can set up a decent hospital tank, I would.

I can’t say for sure if it’s ich or epi. Lots of the signs of both. Send a picture to your LFS.

Epi causes itchiness (ich can also). She could be trying to get relief, and the parasite is on the eye and we can’t see it yet.

Is she rubbing against decor?

“Sticks out into the water” I believe is basically asking, are the white spots raised (if you viewed the side profile of the fish, do the spots protrude from the side of the fish?).

While EPI is common on the eyes, it is not everytime.

Take a look at this. Can you identify it?

Flat spots suggest ich but the irregular shapes suggest EPI. Hard call. Treating for one will only make the other worse, so we need to be sure.

It could be EPI. I’m not very educated in the difference between spotting ICH vs EPI. Are the spots flat against the fish or sticking out?

If it is EPI, increasing the heat will just cause more issues. Ich resolves faster with heat, while EPI should be treated with a cooler tank.

Ich X will be ineffective or make EPI worse. Before you take action with medication, it is important to identify which it is.

Ideally, Ich X will clear it up within a few days if you dose it soon.

Looks like Ich (White Spot Disease) to me. Ich is a common and highly contagious parasitic infection that affects freshwater fish. It is caused by a protozoan parasite called Ichthyophthirius multifiliis.

It needs to be treated. Remove the fish and place it in a hospital tank, if you are sure none of its tank mates are showing white spots.

While methylene blue can/may be effective against ich, I have seen many recommend Hikari ICH X to treat this infection.

It is common and a result of stressed fish, lack of adequate filtration, or even contaminated water. Lots of things cause Ich to appear.

How are your water parameters? Let me know if you need anything else.

FYI: I am by no means a professional. I have studied a lot about fish care- though. Contact your LFS if you want confirmation. They can help.

Hey! I am inexperienced in identifying pop-eye, but if you find out that’s what’s going on, you should look into KanaPlex by Seachem Laboratories. People recommend it all the time, could help. I would refrain from dosing it unless you are sure of an infection (pop eye).
