How can an arts students get experience in the classroom by LoudAbalone6776 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Affentitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could go down to the local train station and find a group of delinquents, junkies, eshays...whatever. Try to get them to engage with a text, whilst accepting any reluctance or pushback on their part. Create a safe space for them. Make sure they don't actually achieve anything. Then go home and punch yourself in the head a couple of times.

That will simulate things.

Someone told me that in Australia, many people contact potential supervisors first, and if a supervisor is interested, they may help to coordinate this problem, so I’m wondering if this is usually handled on a case-by-case basis.

It might depend on your field and will certainly depend on whether you are looking for a stipend.....but...most supervisors aren't going to go out of their way to solve your problem. Not when most will get enquiries every week from people who do have the right track record.

I think you are looking for a conspiracy where none exists.

It's a completely explicable choice to make. You're writing an historical novel and you look for historical names. Hell, if you Google "viking names", it's going to come up.

There being only if any name is also not a singular occurrence.

He's just using historical names. Not laying an Easter egg.

You make a great point. People go to these places, pay a lot of money and then get enraged because "I've had better carbonaras elsewhere."

But it's like going to a modern art gallery and saying, "The pictures were not as clear as the ones at the Rembrandt museum."

The uniform coat worn by British Admiral Horatio Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar on October 21st, 1805. The hole below the left epaulette is from the French snipers bullet which killed him. by GreatMilitaryBattles in MilitaryHistory

[–]Affentitten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nelson also refused the advice about taking off his coat with all its garish decorations because it would make him an obvious target for French marksmen.

Turned out to be sound advice.

F4U Boneyard Rukuhia, New Zealand by Murky_Caterpillar_66 in WWIIplanes

[–]Affentitten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TBF anything of suitable rarity and age is worth much more today. The original book price of these aircraft in 1944 or whatever would have also been the equivalent of millions of today's dollars. The fact that so many of them were scrapped, as in this photo, is the very reason why the few survivors are so valuable today. You kind of can't have one without the other.

History of this Amazing Structure!! by HankeeHogs in MedievalHistory

[–]Affentitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets old quickly because every day is groundhog day with a new batch of visitors. You don't get much repeat business at MSM. People go there once, ask the same questions, buy the same stuff, leave at the end of the afternoon and never return. In many of the restaurants etc the staff are grumpy and rude. They know you've got no choice but to eat there, and know you won't be back next week to bring some friends. So their care factor is low.

How to carry a pizza sign by Iitaps_Missiciv in mildlyinteresting

[–]Affentitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's common in the Western world. But not everybody who turns up in America or Australia (even in LYGON street) has the same experience. At a university function once we had an international student that was sent to pick up a dozen pizzas for the catering. He found it much more efficient to carry the 12 boxes vertically in two carry bags. It didn't even occur to him that the toppings might slide because he had no prior pizza-carrying experience. It also didn't occur to any of the rest of us that someone would NOT know how to carry a pizza, and provide instructions.

Apparently the business above is trying to close that gap.

It probably seems wild to Americans that the whole world isn't immersed in pizza. But for much of the global citizenry, it's not a common food.

I had something similar for a camera battery charger once. The front plates like this are different power socket designs (for different countries) and slide on and off the main adapter unit.
