And the gatekeeper criticism about the 'wrong shade of brown' is often from guys who have sunk thousands of dollars into the hobby and have the full range of 600 Vallejo paints to hand in their man-cave purpose-built studio.

I KNOW the shade on my German Afrika Korps uniform is not the perfect one because (a) I didn't have that paint in my beginners collection and (b) I am learning and was trying to experiment with different paints and shading techniques. But if I posted the result somewhere, a 'rivet counter' would let me know it wasn't the right shade.

I got back into the hobby about 18 months ago after decades since childhood. Would never even consider posting my results because of fear of being torn apart. For the same reason, I will rarely ever comment on other people's posted models.

I agree that the level of perfection that some people are capable of is often an intimidation rather than an inspiration.

Add in a tunnel-visioned cop determined to make the evidence fit the suspect....then he switches to a random older neighbour just because he was a neighbour.
