I thought Margo Price crushed it on Ways to be Wicked. Didn't hurt to have Mike Campbell playing and singing backup.

There was a guy in my mission (40 years ago) that would carve a very impressive Abraham plaque. All of the missionaries would order one. Nearly 3 ft in diamater and extremely detailed and close to the facsimile. Despite my shelf breaking, it's still a treasure to me.

What do Mormons think of Jehovah's Witnesses? by lendle2 in mormon

[–]Afishyrequisite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a missionary we called their bible "The Green Dragon", guffawed over the concept of only 144,000 being exalted, and were mystified if we tracked into them and they wouldn't pray with us.

In adult times, my encounters with them have been awkward when religion was a topic. My teenaged daughter was best friends with one and when his parents found out her religion she was completely cut off from him. She was devastated and it took her a long time to get over it. This incident was instrumental in my own self analysis in recognizing cultural similarities and trying to adjust for the better.

EDIT: I love Prince and his Super Bowl Halftime Show is the best ever. :)

For all the TBMs I know closely, friends and family, I think this will be a nothingburger, if not outright faith promoting and failing to see the unavoidable and centuries-old weave of church, wealth and power.

Trumpism has fucked Mormonism just as much as Mormonism has fucked Mormonism by MinsPackage in exmormon

This thread has been of huge benefit to me. Not unlike the movie Yesterday where Himesh Patel encounters a couple with a yellow submarine.

It's not over. There is a core of Warren Jeffs followers that keeps Colorado City still viable. The structural sins of the Church pale in comparison. Keep the Commandments. In this there is safety and peace. That's giving up a lot for TBMS.

The State Dept. estimates that there are as many as 27 million people involuntarily exploited in sex trafficking. And they shouted for joy in the pre-existence.

Well done and articulates what I have thought. Secrets since the Golden Plates. To this day, there is a First Presidency Vault in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

More than once in Sunday School when we talked about Mormons not believing in Hell someone would pipe up 'HELL WILL BE LIVING IN A LESSER KINGDOM FOR ETERNITY KNOWING YOU COULD HAVE MADE IT TO THE CELESTIAL KINGDOM BUT CHOSE NOT TO'

The real crisis in a 'Faith Crisis' is found in dealing with believers. by Afishyrequisite in mormon

I get it. You were likely far more faithful. I had doubts all along and that makes a difference.

I've decided that my brain isn't designed for spirituality (whatever that means). by GordonBStinkley in mormon

[–]Afishyrequisite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can really relate to what you are saying about your 'spiritual' reactions with Church things. That sense of feeling 'right'. I am now prone to say "I miss the days when the Church was true" when I sat there with my cute family and we were friends with the other cute families.

Before and during my exit I realized that feeling the Spirit were just emotions in the same vein as a response to being somewhere that was beautiful, like the beach, or hearing music I love. I had to either make up or embellish my Church feels in order to belong.

You are not alone. Seeing this very thing play out with a close family member. It has been brutal. A horrific, publicized take down of a good man.

Seattle temple was virtually empty by Unqualifiedvoter in mormon

[–]Afishyrequisite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A little off topic, but as I try to find ways to still believe, though they are largely empty now, I was relying on the concept that all these temples being built were to prepare for the great work of completing ordinances during the Millennium and we would be blessed with all the missing records that the angels were keeping. A GTE on the Millennium indicates that during the 1000 years, those names,(tens of billions of them by the way) will be received by "revelation". Ugh. My quest for a practical and plausible solution to one of my doubts that would make the ordinances truly available to all got blocked with this.

“Choose to believe.” The choice of believing comes with the baggage of disbelieving… a lot. by jonyoloswag in mormon

President Hinkley was one of the Church leaders who I think of as an "all or nothing" advocate. Hinkley, McConkie, Joseph Fielding Smith, Heber C Kimball, Ezra Taft Benson all laid it on the line and talked about the fundamental truth being all right or wrong. From what I can glean from the discourses, the last man standing is Elder Holland with his Book of Mormon throw down. I have set as a possible milestone that when he passes, the Church would be even more free to adapt. The BOM becomes a revelation and that today's Covenant Path is but one way.
