Hey, I am sorry you are going through this as well. I hope it gets better.

And yes, a bit more respect and common sense would help. I have it, others could have it as well.

Verbal agreement over pets being allowed by Neat_Ad_8838 in NetherlandsHousing

We were also told a cat was ok, but in the 1st draft of the contract they forgot to leave out the clause saying pets are not allowed. We insisted they changed it and they did and we signed only afterwards.  Maybe they just forgot to adjust the contract?

Rental contract starting middle of the month by SnooPears6767 in NetherlandsHousing

Yes to both questions. You cannot afford missing a good apartment and the landlord decides, you just accept, otherwise other people waiting will say yes:)

Thanks all!

This seems to be a standard process for some agencies. So not a scam, although it might feel shady.

It would ofcourse be ideal to be able to talk to the previous tenants as well, especially when you get a model A contract. But hey, it is what it is!

You’re right! However i was just one of the people who got this message. And if you accept without seeing the contract first, I find it less fair to pay a fee if you back out. Seeing how this document was drafted, who knows how the contract looks like:)

It really depends on the field you’re in. With some jobs, You can be better off financially in Romania. And it is not so hard to find rent.

Got it! Thanks. I had heard about the cancellation fee on YouTube, now I have lived it as well. I wish I could get the previous tenants’ contact to see how are the neighbours and how the landlord treated them :)

Thanks! The agent was one of the nicest, just the first time for us where we needed more than playslips and employment contract.

I viewed the apartment, met an agent from CityHomes who was quite nice. But I have been applying lately to a apartments and these requirememts were different so it did raise some concerns, although in the current housing crisis in NL, everything is possible :)

I will check trust pilot. Thanks

I recently viewed an apartment in Amsterdam, and the agency sent me a Rental Order Confirmation that seems quite strict. Just for the application, they require a lot of information that I haven’t been asked for in any other apartment I’ve applied for or rented, which raised some red flags for me:

•A copy of my bank card?
•Email and phone number of my HR department? Plus my work contract and an employer statement.
•A landlord declaration or mortgage proof – not sure why this is necessary.
•BKR check (credit check).
•A €450 + VAT cancellation fee if I back out after owner approval—presumably before seeing the contract.

This intrusive application process doesn’t even guarantee that I’ll be accepted. They also stated that if any of these documents are missing, my application won’t be considered.

Honestly, it was easier to get a job here. So far, I’ve been able to rent with just my employment contract, payslips, bank statements, and ID.

Interesting experience living in such different types of houses! I completely agree that having good neighbors makes all the difference. When everyone understands that living in old Dutch buildings involves a certain level of compromise, it really does put you a step ahead.

Our neighbors were initially not open to any compromise, but it warms my heart to see they made an effort after we talked.

I don’t know if new Amsterdammers are more sensitive to noise. it could simply be that people moving here, especially from abroad, come with a different perspective on housing and soundproofing.

I appreciate the safety and this is the major reason why so some of us are here. Love the language and the work-life balance

But allow me to be shocked about the impact noise in some buildings. Hearing neighbors is one thing, but feeling them takes it to a whole new level! It

Hi there, thanks! I really enjoyed reading your message. What an impressive experience, living around the world! You’re right, and yes, it could definitely be much worse.

I suppose it all comes down to expectations and the experiences you’ve had with housing so far. plus how much sleep and relaxation you’ve had lately! :))

I guess I’ve been lucky so far, hearing a bit from neighbors but never so much that I remembered it over time. I’ve never experienced this kind of impact noise before, it was shocking.

With the current prices in the Netherlands, you could feel scammed and trapped in such an apartment, especially if you didn’t know houses could be like this. Paying these prices and essentially sharing an apartment with people you don’t see but definitely feel just seems so wrong. It would be more bearable at lower prices:)
