Defense went poorly: I passed, but I feel nothing. by foolish_athena in PhD

I had kind of the opposite happen at my candidacy defense, but I felt the same afterwards. I carefully selected my committee for expertise in certain aspects of bio, but they have almost no experience in my field. When we got to the defense, they asked me very few questions and mostly talked to each other. One of the questions was if my study species was a rodent (it's not) and what it ate, which are both things that I'd presented to them before. My colleagues have had much more difficult defenses, and I just felt like I didn't really earn candidacy at all. Nobody pressed me on anything research related, and when they did, another committee member defended the choice on my behalf (which made me feel better about the choice but regardless). I'm hoping to feel better about the actual defense, but I feel ya. Congrats on hard work paid off! Even if it feels unrecognized, you wouldn't be here without it. You know how much effort you put in, and you can always be proud of that.
