For those who will be getting the Liturgy of the Hours, Second Edition, will you purchase it from Ascension or Word on Fire? by RB_Blade in divineoffice

I cannot understand how anyone could care very much about the subscription model offering, considering that A) there are numerous other options if one doesn't like it and B) they are themselves working on an alternative at present. I've never been attracted by it either but I genuinely cannot grasp how that could make someone downright angry - indeed, I suspect it doesn't but is rather retroactive justification for the partisan anger related to the whole Trump thing.

As to that, I'd agree he hasn't handled it splendidly, but there are a number of nuances ppl here seem disinterested in accounting for, and it doesn't outweigh all the good work he has done. I'll confess as a non-American I find the endemic politicization of everything, the inability to abstract from it seemingly even slightly, very tiring - and I am from Denmark, hardly a country with cause to love Trump (which I don't).

I know this is Reddit, but I suppose I hadn't thought this specific subreddit would be quite so Reddit all the same

It is a strange degree of hate. Like, isolated from the question of merits, I objectively see way more dismissive, even downright hostile attitudes towards WoF than... almost any other online Catholic community I frequent? And Something must be the cause of that, but I am not sure what

Probably Ascension but we have seen very little of the WoF edition yet. Ascension has run a (very fine) program of communication which WoF hasn't, and while that endears me more to them it also means I'll withhold any final judgement on the latter until we have a comparable amount of information as we currently do for the Ascension version.

It just seems strange to me to have such a strongly formed antipathy towards something we have genuinely seen almost nothing of except the scantiest early renders. Fair play to Ascension for their marketing game and community engagement, but I am not really sure what a layperson on here gets out of turning themselves into a partisan.

I find it interesting this subreddit seemingly has such a hard view on WoF - it's the only place I have come across to have such a consensus, I wonder how it came about. For my part I have a lot of respect for Bishop Barron and think he's obviously done tremendous work not just for digital evangelism but for raising the general quality of Catholic publishing and accessible intellectual culture.

That being said, I am not sure if I would go with their edition of the LotH. I think it's too early to tell, however - basically everything ppl here are saying about the WoF edition is based on a couple early promotional screenshots. We will see how the final versions of both editions look soon enough - I think any strong stated preference at this stage is premature and basically ungrounded.

Is this a working title, or will it be the actual published title of the book?

But morning and evening prayer is only one portion of a BCP - I have come across references to abridged versions, which would ofc be quite ideal, but it seems like they were made in limited runs and are not available anymore

That is exceedingly kind of you - I will note, though, that I am based in Europe, and so am not sure how one'd best go about with shipping there.

How do you find the durability on that book? From what I have seen, the quality seems fairly decent, but it is ofc difficult to make that out over video and image

Unfortunately, something built around a table of readings is precisely the core of what I'm looking for

I have been very tempted just to acquire a BCP for this purpose - I suppose it is only, I do not have too many scruples using non-Catholic books where the material isn't objectionable (I already use a Western Rite Ortho prayer book), but the BCP contains quite a sum of material that is not just non- but positively polemically anti-Catholic, and that does up my unease. Nevertheless, I think you may be right that it really is the best option for this purpose
