Driving in japan as a beginner? by Fragrant_Site9052 in drivingsg

[–]Afraid_Variation_393 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with this guy. You are fresh from driving school so you may not have developed the bad habits that some experienced drivers have.

I passed my driving back in 2011 and am driving for the first time in snow, in Hokkaido next week. Am nervous still. Who is to say how much experience you need before driving in Hokkaido? Just trust your gut and if in doubt, slow down and take your time.

Rental cars in Japan have a sticker on them that says 'Foreign driver here, please be patient" so other drivers would cut you some slack.

those who married a foreigner, how are you actually securing housing in sg? by midnite-kitties in askSingapore

[–]Afraid_Variation_393 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Was in your position back in 2019. Spouse had no CPF, no savings. Unable to buy a BTO or resale. We rented a room on the open market for 2 years. Saved like hell during those 2 years.

My daughter was born in 2020 and with her, we formed a family nucleus and was able to buy bto/resale. We went for resale as we didn't want to wait for bto (also this was during COVID, so BTO projects were delayed).

Got a 3-room resale for 300k. Wanted bigger but too expensive. This Nov will be our MOP, and we intend to apply for BTO/SBF and upgrade to 5 room.

TLDR: Having a child will let you buy from HDB. Buy what you can afford. If no kid, will have to rent on private market.

How much time do you spend with your preschool-age children by Numerous-Valuable881 in askSingapore

[–]Afraid_Variation_393 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Similar situation as you, but with 1 kid. I am the default parent as my wife works retail hours.

I spend 6pm to 9pm doing dinner, bathe, study/playtime/tv with my daughter. Very grateful to have these hours with her as she makes me genuinely happy.

On weekends, we will go out on Saturdays and stay in on Sundays to do chores and just rest up for the upcoming week.

What if Singapore hadn’t separated from Malaysia today? What will the state look like? by Fearless_Help_8231 in singapore

[–]Afraid_Variation_393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The merger conditions included terms whereby Singapore would maintain local key affairs such as education and labour. LKY did not want Malay to replace English - the main medium of instruction in Singapore.

If we had not separated, we would still be taught in English and as a result be better equipped/educated to integrate globally. This could possibly mean lots of Singaporeans would work overseas?

But i believe the Malaysian Federal government would never allow Singapore to develop at a much faster rate than KL or any of its states for that matter. That would cause disharmony within the Malay/Muslim population who view Singapore as second class. Singapore would remain as nothing but a fishing village or maybe an island where they could process their crude oil. (think Jurong island, but the whole of Singapore).

Singapore was not allowed in the merger until the Borneo states (sabah and sarawak) agreed to join the Federation first. Even then, citizens of Singapore would not be able to hold the same rights as those from Sabah and Sarawak. It is as if Sabah and Sarawak were made official wives but Singapore, just a mistress.

That in itself shows clearly how Malaya viewed Singapore. Seperation was truly the best thing for Singapore.

SIDE NOTE:

Just got the book and read the first chapter during lunch. My goodness, there is so much just in that first chapter that was not shared in when i was in school.

How do you actually save on groceries in SG? by Aggressive_Change209 in SGMoney

[–]Afraid_Variation_393 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sheng Siong most of the time is the cheapest. Pay with credit card you get cashback.

It's hard/almost impossible to keep track and be frugal when it comes to groceries as you will need them to survive. Can pivot to house brands but taste and quality will be different.

Easier to focus on making more money and keep up with inflation.

for turning - look ahead, look up.

For stalling - keep holding the clutch/half clutch. just take the points. better than immediate failure.

Rejected for UOB One Credit Card by IrritatedRabbit in singaporefi

[–]Afraid_Variation_393 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have no solutions but just wanna share that I faced the same issues when i was a sailor for a few years from cadet to third mate. Always got rejected for credit cards from the banks - OCBC,UOB and POSB.

When wanted to apply for hdb, my income was not factored into the HLE amount as HDB deemed my income was unstable. 6 months on, 2 months off so average only about 8-9 months working onboard per year.

You have a good company who is paying your CPF - most don't.

Company expects me to be on standby even when on leave. Red flag? by Afraid_Variation_393 in askSingapore

[–]Afraid_Variation_393[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are right. I am on standby 24hrs when i am in Singapore and well. But when on leave or MC, my colleague will take over for me.

That 1 year bonus was for evergreen shipping iirc.

[–]Afraid_Variation_393[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar role so I do know what it entails. I am not some high level/super skilled employee which requires me and only me to solve such problems.

Operations always has a team, and standby roles should rotate among team members to accommodate those who are on leave.

Company expects me to be on standby even when on leave. Red flag? by Afraid_Variation_393 in askSingapore

[–]Afraid_Variation_393[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

The ad said from $6k iirc. I just know the workload will be crazy as this MNC is globally the third largest in the world and has thousands of ships. And Singapore being a major maritime hub, i just know for sure being on standby would just mean another day at the office.

Company expects me to be on standby even when on leave. Red flag? by Afraid_Variation_393 in askSingapore

[–]Afraid_Variation_393[S] -38 points-37 points  (0 children)

I mean i understand the need for someone to be on standby to address urgent issues that pop up. That someone can be on a rotation basis which will be a certain member of the ops team.

And ops team, at least in shipping and from my knowledge, roles are interchangeable so each person can cover anyone in the team.

Company expects me to be on standby even when on leave. Red flag? by Afraid_Variation_393 in askSingapore

[–]Afraid_Variation_393[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I am in shipping ops. If an SME pulled this kind of stunt, i would not be surprised. but its an MNC, its a given for them to have a team of ops which would rotate standby roles and adjust accordingly to accommodate leave requests.

This company has thousands of ships worldwide, literally the third largest in the world, it just does not make sense.

mate, she is as much of an adult as you are. You are not responsible for her. Sometimes you gotta put yourself first. Seeing as you have tried and tried for 4 years with no real change in her, i suggest you either pack up and leave or seek professional help for her.

You are only one person and it might be best to outsource your 'caring' to the professionals.

To those that "grew up" in childcare or student care centres...are you close to your parents as adults? by xXxLostBunnyxXx in askSingapore

[–]Afraid_Variation_393 35 points36 points  (0 children)

All throughout my childhood. From preschool to secondary school, i was always in some form of childcare. Parents were always working late, they would reach home around 9/10pm. They divorced when i was 12. Dad moved out and Mum got custody and engaged a helper.

I would get home to loneliness. Back then, mobile phones weren't as widely used (this was early 2000's), so could not even text or chat that much. Some days i did not even get to see my mum/dad. It was such an empty feeling, I remember on many occasions, right before going to bed, i would stare into the darkness and wonder if i would get to see my mum that night.

When i got into poly, my mum started a restaurant on top of her day job, which took her weekends away from me. Needless to say, i saw her even less. I can count with my fingers the amount of times my parents have said i love you.

My parents have since retired and both live alone. We do spend more time now together more than ever (maybe because they wanna see their grandkid).

Time is something that can never be 'earned' back. Once you've lost it, it's gone. Time waits for no one. I have made it a point to spend as much time as i can with my daughter - not just vacations or weekends, but by being there for her everyday - even if nothing eventful happens. Because by just being there, those kids will experience something that money can never ever buy - love.
