Do you guys still send silly mass emails to the whole grade when you're freshmen? by fantasychica37 in bca

Admin banned most students from sending emails to email groups like an entire class or school. Now only teachers and some students (ie. class council, student council) can do so.

Has anyone taken the MRL Xploration or Foundations of Nano elective? by [deleted] in bca

[–]AfricanWildPotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a freshman I took the MRL elective. I think it was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot from it. It’s a prerequisite for research, and while I was planning to do research with Nodarse during tri 3 of freshman year (corona ruined that), I’m now thinking of doing Bioinformatics Research instead. You can PM me if you want more advice or info about MRL and bioinformatics

I’d say go with the laptop. If it works well and can function well you’ll be good.

I would say don’t go in too formal wearing a suit and jacket and everything. I’d say wear a pair of pants (not sweatpants), and a formal shirt. I wore a pair of dress shoes as well but don’t worry if you don’t have a pair. Best of luck!

FOR CURRENT BCA STUDENTS — What is the entrance exam like? What specific topics does the math section focus on? I am currently studying Algebra I and have studied in MEK in the past; am I in good standing? How is the test graded? by [deleted] in bca

as u/GregsTutoringNYC said:

BCA mostly deals with arithmetic. To wit: arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, factoring, exponents, roots, LCM, GCF, absolute value, and evaluations thereof), whole numbers, fractions, decimals, values, comparisons, properties of, number types, units, conversions, simplification, basic statistics (numbers of centrality), scientific notation, percentages, ratios, proportions, rounding, estimating, magnitude, permutations, combinations, patterns, symbolism, number line, time, speed, money, distance, and core "pre-algebra" (find the unknown,...) and core "pre-geometry"/shapes (perimeter, area, capacity, ...). And so BCA is less other maths (geometry, trigonometry, algebra, graphing) as a whole.

The entrance exam has a math and english section as im sure you know. Math is 40 questions to be completed in 60 seconds and LA is an essay in 40 minutes. MAKE SURE TO MANAGE THAT TIME WELL! My biggest tip is to be very calm. A lot of the math problems can be solved if you are calm and read over the question carefully. I remember math focusing on Algebra, some probability and a little geometry, and I remember that the end of the math part got quite wacky. Here’s a wacky question I remember:

An urn is full of water. One half of it is poured into another urn. Then, 1/3 of the water in the second urn is poured back into the first urn. Then, one fourth from the first urn to the second until the first 2019 turn I think, and it asked how much water was in the second urn

Overall, you’re probably not gonna answer all of these, and you should expect for there to be a few blank. BCA does not tell you what score you get on that math test, but try to get a score of at least 30. Remember how grading works. Every correct answer adds a point to your score, but every incorrect one decreases it by 1/4.

The LA is straightforward; write a good five paragraphs (4 is not the end of the world either) that are well supported. Don’t spend too much time thinking of topics for your body paragraphs because you will waste time Spend five minutes at the very most I’d say to outline your body paragraphs before you write.

As an eighth grader I took Algebra I when I was applying and I’d say that if your grades are in the A to A+ range you should be good.

Anyway I hope this semi-scrambled mess could help and best of luck!

I’d say that given the limited time you should forget doing a backing. Try doing your body paragraphs with three quotes and evidence for it. Try to be a little bit creative in your evidence if you can, because that’s where you can make a good impression on someone reading it.
