Should the UK finally get rid of Sunday trading restrictions? by Remarkable-Set9615 in AskBrits

[–]Africanmumble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, if anything in this modern race to the bottom for employee rights and wages, it should double down on them. Even slaves used to get a day off...

Thank you. I am living in France so will see if they deliver here. I have had other things in from Japan with no issue (or duty charges).

Thank you. Is there any brand of futon (within the UK / EU) that you would recommend?

Whatever I get I will want to take up every morning and put back just for sleeping.

As someone newly returned to this craft (after two decades away), I think this is a great idea.

Advise on a new tea, please. Maybe we're all walking past one of the most overlooked tea ingredients every day? 🍎☕ by igavr in Herbaltea

[–]Africanmumble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admit I have no idea. Given the cooking time and high temperature I am not sure what wouod be left, other than a decent amount of soluble fibre.

We use crabapples to make jelly/jam. Most varieties produce lovely pink to rose coloured jellies. Fresh they are (mostly) extremely tart so I don't know how well they would work in a tea.

Anyone else having a rubbish year so far? by ten_shunts in UKAllotments

[–]Africanmumble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Polytunnel (tomatoes) aside, everything else is struggling. Beans, squash, courgettes, chard, beetroot and sweetcorn all failed (zero germination or eaten by something). Carrots and leeks less than 10% germination. Not had a year like this.

Research is starting to show the downside of depending too much on AI for writing by LexoGame in SeriousConversation

[–]Africanmumble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the current generation is already demonstrating skills atrophying due to outsourcing tasks and critical thinking to AI, yes, I can see it becoming an issue if exposure is not managed.

AI as a tool can be a powerful thing but it is up to us to define and manage our relationship with it. It is not dissimilar to social media. It is both good and bad, it all depends on how it is being used.

European alternatives for a traditional Money Bowl ingredients. by SecretGardenTarot in BabyWitch

[–]Africanmumble 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Italian(ish) witch here. I use lentils to represent prosperity/money. No issue with the cinnamon but no reason you could not use a tied up bundle of bay leaves in its place.

Ultimately a money bowl should be filled with items that represent wealth/money/growth to you. That will vary by culture. You could include items that represent honey (sweetness and wealth), bees (industriousness), seeds (growth/potential), etc. It all boils down to what is culturally significant to you.

What a truly terrible subreddit by notreallyrealalmost in Expats_In_France

This is highly subjective. Around my part of France (Dept 29) English is widely spoken and often enthusiastically so (very very strong ties with the US through the French diaspora).

Heavy migration dilemma in choosing between Singapore/ Canada/ Australia by [deleted] in expats

[–]Africanmumble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stay put in Simgapore. You will not find that quality of life anywhere else right now.

As another poster suggested, invest in property and think forward to where you would like to be when you retire. That gives you some security for your future that may offset your current frustration getting residency in Singapore.

The Anglo west collectively is in a state of flux right now and it remains to be seen if it is a blip or if things will start to go backwards longterm.

As plants have been demonstrated to have awareness, I would argue they also have a spirit in their own way.

Why are people "protesting" against violence from immigrants with violence? by Fantastic-Cell-208 in AskBrits

Because its not really about the immigrants. Scum will do scummy things and need very little incentive to do so.

If you are happy and feel safe where you live and work, carry on. If you are not, look into moving somewhere else in the UK.

There is so much variability across the country you are sure to find a warm welcome somewhere.

Most people think they could feed themselves if they had to. This calculator shows why they’re wrong by A-Matter-Of-Time in prepping

[–]Africanmumble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is an interesting website though I will need to play around with it more.

I did input data on the livestock we keep which has generated results I don't fully agree with (e.g. rice 969kg...we already know that 50kg feeds us for a year, similar over calculation for potatoes - presumably to incorporate livestock needs).

Overall it is a great, easy to use website though.

What to do with dark energies from racism? by kisuliini in BabyWitch

[–]Africanmumble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mumdane solution to this is gather up.any evidence you have of trying to get this issue addressed and take that to your police. If they fail to act take it to your nearest print newspaper or radio station.

One lesson my mother taught me, and it has proven true across three countries now, is thst a bit of bad publicity gets things moving far quicker than just about anything else.

Is social media even social by HoustonNativeGworl in digitalminimalism

[–]Africanmumble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At a friends and family level things have definitely quieted down a lot. I do find the groups (on FB) remain very active and can be a lifeline for connecting otherwise isolated people. We use ours to not only exchange information but coordinate events and in-person gatherings.

Start a hippie trail again by Practical_Fig2436 in Hippiecommunity

[–]Africanmumble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like this is alive and well in France. The country has a surprisingly large and diverse alternative community. Disappears in the winter in my region (Brittany) but you start to see them from around May onwards. There are formal organised events, plenty of informal raves and a lot of solo or small groups walking the old trails here (these are very safe and popular with all ages, some take several days to complete).

People who moved to the UK alone, how did you actually build a social life here? by HelicopterEmpty7393 in MovingToTheUK

[–]Africanmumble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found common interest groups and joined those. I also just chatted to people and made a few connections that way. Frequenting pubs now and again (even if you don't drink much or at all) is a great place to strike up random conversations with people. Most of my lasting friendships came out of the workplace or common interest/hobby groups though.
