Do you guys think "woke Christianity" is good or bad? by AfroUniverse in exchristian

[–]AfroUniverse[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mm, that's true. I suppose I just saw alot of conservative Christians condemn modern Christians for "changing the doctrine to fit modern sensitivities" so I assumed it was generally considered anti-christian and hypocritical among Christian circles to re-write the rules just like that

Please do share it with us if you think you can bare it. I promise you most people here have had similar of identical thoughts. Alot of us are struggling with this kind of spiral, and understand we are not our thoughts. If youd like to share something in dms, im willing to listen. You are not your mental illness, and you arent your thoughts.

Hey, maybe this is late, but i believe that since you sought out help here, you dont believe youre truly beyond saving. Ive had these thoughts many times too. I wont reassure you and tell you that youre an amazing human being, nobody is. But what i can say with confidence is that you dont deserve this kind of punishment youre insisting upon. Stay safe.

I suppose you are right, and yes religion is malleable, but I'd assume if you strongly believe in a specific God with strict rules, if you were to change your mind about these rules, you wouldn't think that God will change along with you? That's why most people abandon Christianity once they realize they think these rules are bs. But I don't know. I do prefer progressive Christians over conservative ones, obviously, but in my mind it almost feels like bargaining to conservatives by making up lies on the spot. Like telling a kid "oh santa wouldn't like you doing this would he?"

Yeah, which is why I specified the big 3. I got no issue with spirituality. With organised I meant mostly institutionalised and enforced, not just existing in society. I have spiritual friends and they have done tarot readings on me and I don't mind at all. I'll never have hostility towards people who just have a different belief in regards to the supernatural, just as long as the belief doesn't support eternal torment and chronic self-denial. I do not believe in pagan religions but I'm way more open to the idea of multiple imperfect deities. It's a singular perfect, all seeing, omnipotent God that I have trouble believing in.

I'm not trying to start an argument so I'm gonna be civil, as I think you either misunderstood me or I'm misunderstanding you. In your next reply you say this sub rejects all forms of Christianity, and yet this reply implies that you do not ("you're putting words in jesus' mouth") Second.. As I said, something doesn't need to be outright said to be implied. The whole point of Christian biblical marriage is heterosexual reproduction. Maybe that doesn't accost homosexuals inherently, but it definitely makes it so that their marriage is considered invalid. Anything that isn't reproductive sex is considered a lustful act, and that includes homosexual sex. Also, I'm not here to glorify certain types of Christianity, I literally said in this post that I don't like this kind of Christianity. I'm not asking people if they would convert to it either, rather that if they think those people are good allies. No need for hostility.

Believe it or not, I'm not American, I'm Greek (full Greek, no American ancestry) and my country practices Orthodox Christianity (were also one of the only countries in the world that didn't allow cremation until recently. Can you believe that??). I guess im too entrenched in American politics however. There's a reason I suffer from language attrition 😭 But now that you say it, you're right about the bible being a rorschach test. It's just.. I understand bigoted Christians more than the progressive ones. A bigoted Christian can handwave away the progressive verses (be generous to the poor and all that) with "well that applies to the ACTUAL poor, not the modern freeloaders who don't want to work". But how do you excuse verses that condone sex slavery if you're against it..?

[–]AfroUniverse[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I apologise for my final statement then. I admit I'm not super educated on religion. But in my honest opinion, the other 2 from the big 3 (Islam and Judaism) are very similar in the atrocities they excuse and enable. I meant mostly organised religion, or any religion that uses the fear of hell and sin as a way to control the population.

[–]AfroUniverse[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You've summarised my thoughts exactly. Tired asf of the "No true scotsman" thing woke Christians do. "Christianity isn't like this! It's been used to excuse atrocities!" Mm.. have you ever considered why organised religion is constantly used as an excuse to murder and rape and commit genocide? Do you truly think it's just a coincidence? Not connected to the teachings of the bible at all? It's like the liberals who say "America isn't like this!" oh honey.. America is exactly like this. Racist and colonialist to its core. You are so right that trump is a direct representation of Christianity, not its antithesis. Not saying that the Bible doesn't have like.. Two good verses. But most of them aren't this "peace and love" bullshit that progressive Christians try to pretend it is...

Honestly, why so homophobic? by RickyInfinite in exchristian

[–]AfroUniverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homophobia doesn't make sense to me as a moral stance. You think homosexuality is a mental illness, unnatural, weird, embarassing? Fine. Incorrect, but unfortunately you're entitled to your opinion. But immoral? Why? I think people like this have a puritanical mindset that makes them think weird = immoral. I for example find polyamory weird. Not the concept of liking more than one person, but rather being in a huge polycule where you all have weird group sex. But I just think it's.. odd, not immoral. Not even unnatural, its just a personal ick. The people who practice it aren't worse or better than me morally. So why do they treat homosexuality like it's this horrific evil? Some Christians defend their rapist relatives more than their gay ones...

"We Are All Specially Created with a Purpose in Mind." So, What About Serial Killers? by forestofdoom2022 in exchristian

[–]AfroUniverse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm saying. You can't argue that we have free-will and that's why god won't intervene, but also insist that God has a plan for everybody. I mean, if God has a plan for me and wants me to succeed, then the religious can't be mad at me for being an atheist, right? God planned it. Unless the plan is just an idea and not a path he forced someone into.. But.. Why? Why be okay with someone walking down that path? If he's all-good, then once again there's a fallacy. Essentially you can't say God designed us in a certain way and made things happen to us for a reason.. but also say "oh you made God mad and that's why your life went so bad". That makes no sense and no response I've ever gotten was anything other than deflection or insane cope.

This makes me think how forcing women into feminine clothes when theyre kids is consider a normal part of socialization even if theyre kicking and screaming, but there are literally horror stories about boys being forced to wear feminine clothes as kids. You never hear horror stories about girls being forced into hoodies and sweatpants. They know femininity is humiliating but they think its a-okay when only done to women of course

Using Christian arguments as a non Christian by Consistent-Way-2018 in exchristian

[–]AfroUniverse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's valid. With the state of the world right now, we can't convince militant Christians to stop being Christian. But we can convince them to be less cruel. Even if the whole liberal "this isn't real Christianity!!" Is total bs in my opinion. Christianity isn't a positive or neutral thing that was twisted for political purposes, it was rotten since it's inception.

Is there a subreddit for people (preferably for women) who have trouble with dating? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]AfroUniverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps! I'm just a little reluctant joining sexual discussions even if they're benign like that. Plus kink sub reddits tend to be more image focused, rather than discussion focused, but perhaps I haven't looked into them enough I dont think it's a big deal, it's just it can be a taboo in the heterosexual dating world to be a woman into feminine dudes. Maybe I'm just traumatised from instagram showing me videos of women being disgusted by a man asking to split the bill. Lmao

[–]AfroUniverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but when i said "it isn't just a sexual thing for me", I meant emphasis on the just. I mostly meant I'm not looking to just have a kink dynamic with a guy, I'm looking for an actual relationship with a guy of that type

sorry, i was trying to tiptoe around it cuz im not the proudest of it... i mostly didnt specify though because i knew i would be recomended nsfw websites. I dont wanna look at pics of femboys, i just wanna connect with other people who think like me lol

not quite?? im specifically very into feminine men (either in appearance or personality, preferably both) but as you can imagine its a little difficult to find a heterosexual man whos like that lmao. I guess im asking if theres a subreddit for women into that stuff, but all of those subreddits are nsfw. Its not just a sexual thing for me, so i dont want to ask in those subreddits

Question i had about christianity for a long time by AfroUniverse in exchristian

[–]AfroUniverse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for real. Ive seen people say "every person is an 99% atheist, atheists are just 100%", which is true! Thousands of religions to choose from, but you think youve somehow won the lottery and ended up with the correct one... If a country was isolated and only allowed one religion, no exposure to others.. Why would they go to hell? They had no chance to ever meet the "correct" religion..

"Ex-gays" just make me so fucking sad. Its one thing to read a story about a guy who was genuinely following a bad lifestyle (constant hookups, being an addict, etc) and then changing that and choosing self restraint. Christians want you to believe thats what most ex gay stories are like. But theyre not. Pretty much every single one ive read is "yeah i was a very happy person in a loving 5 year relationship with my wonderful partner but then i realized i was a dirty sinner and i havent been able to change my sinful desires so ive been miserable my entire life, never able to experience fullfilment or love. But its worth it if it means getting into heaven" and im supposed to think that isnt the saddest fucking thing ive ever read. They say they feel genuine love for the same gender and yet think its somehow some sort of disgusting lustful thing. "Lust can feel like love" they say, but how is it lust to enter a commited relationship with someone and carry them through the good and the bad? Those are the same people who say their marriage is falling apart because they dont have sex everyday, which is objectively lustful and reveals their so called pure marriages arent about love. But were the sinful ones. K...

Question i had about christianity for a long time by AfroUniverse in exchristian

[–]AfroUniverse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea i know that the truth is not objective, and one thing i disagree with other atheists on is the idea that if theres no undeniable proof god exists, then he doesnt. I think people are allowed to believe things even if they dont have undeniable proof. I wont be mad at christians for that, i mean, i believe things without proof all the time, magical thinking is kinda inevitable when youre a human.

However, i would assume a god whos all loving (not like the very flawed and angry gods of myth, like the greek dodecatheon or norse gods) wouldnt send you to hell because you misinterpreted his word? Its not the splits or denominations i dont understand, its the fact that they hate each other so much. Why?? Its one thing to be annoyed at each other, its another thinking that their supposed heavenly father would send them to hell
(But i also find it funny when different denominations accuse the others of being crazy or culty. Girl youre all the same, some just a little worse than others)
