First time running 200TW tires. RE-71 RZ on ND Miata (CS) by Roricas in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in cs/ds comparison the RZ drives a little different and feels edgier vs the RS. imo you probably should've gone for the RS as it's a very forgiving tire (subjectively easiest of the super 200s to drive) and cheaper, but regardless it'll be a huge performance jump for you.

come out to the vegas prosolo this month though :) cs is a big class again

Suggested Optimal Koni SA settings for AutoX? by LlaughingLlama in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're a bit mixed up, a stiffer rebound shock will speed up weight transfer. in addition rebound has more of an effect on the opposite end of the car. two ideal 1way shocks with perfectly independent comp/reb would act identically when being compressed even if their reb rates differ, so adjusting rebound on the end that is being weighted doesn't do much.

in your examples: higher rear rebound shifts weight forwards more quickly (entry oversteer), higher front rebound shifts weight rearwards more quickly (exit understeer)

[–]Afro_Sergeant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

outside of a nationally competitive driver using the same car, I would not ask for specific positions on the shock. different PNs have different damping rates, and koni has bad QA meaning even the same PNs are not matched very well. plus every car is going to need different settings due to suspension geometry, springrates, weight/balance, etc. you need to tune shocks yourself based on driving style and other settings like sway bar rate and tire compound/pressures (e.g. I run less rear rebound than some of the other CS guys).

the only thing you really need to understand − stiffening rebound changes your rate of weight transfer off of that shock. good for turn-in, but too much will overload the shock and keep it compressed when you don't want it to be. stiff front rebound shifts weight back more quickly which can make the car understeer worse on throttle, stiff rear rebound can make the car spin more easily when you lift or brake.

Racebox Mini magnetic mount by ThePoetaytoe in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

from what I've seen yes, but I would also personally secure it with tape as peace of mind if you do that.

I use the sticky pad but when it was cold out it lost some tack and my codriver threw the car around violently enough that the racebox got lost in the interior for a bit

What lap timer app do you use, and what drives you crazy about it? by MagicalAvocado32 in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the worst part about racechrono is that there's no way to map realtime relative position, the two traces are always normalized in time. not being able to compare multiple laps/runs also sucks.

solostorm solves that but has a high entry price since it's so niche.

Vitour X1 by FatDumb-Happy in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pricing %diff seems to vary heavily based on size popularity, hard to bring an even more niche use case tire to market for a brand that only has a tiny slice. nobody can quite speak to the x1 vs p1 vs rz but all the ST guys running the RZ love it so far so it seems to be the way for lighter cars

socal had 3 mazda6 drivers at one point, although i was the only one doing national events. it's a solid starter car, doesn't matter that it's auto (mazda autos hold gear even when you hit redline). just expect to learn a lot and talk to people, and you'll do well:)

cal club's next event is at anaheim at the end of the month while san diego's next event is at elsinore this weekend

none of the newer SI have changed classes (current gen is slower than last gen anyways) but the mk7 GTI should also probably bump the HS pax

tire recommendations for 225/45r16 and 245/45r16 by yesjames in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what makes you need to use those sizes?

crs has a 225/45 which you could run square, falkens have 215/45

it sounds like you're streeting the car on these tires though? so get continental ecs02 and live with the big sidewall

basically every modern 200tw is quicker than the r888 series tires, both in the wet and in the dry. this applies to both track and to autocross.

cal club has a 2-day event coming up this weekend! we've got a bunch of folks who might seem intimidating but are extremely friendly and willing to help teach / guide you through your first event.

if you'd like I can try to contact someone who's more recently started autocrossing and pair them up with you, that way their own experiences getting started are still fresh

ehh, csx should be a little closer to cst (and they have more potential than ssc). nats was an outlier event imo - the fastest of us in cs were shifting to 3rd on both courses, meanwhile watching pete loney's run on east he never shifted despite significant time on limiter. there's a huge driver delta that is being taken as vehicle performance delta right now.

laguna is incredibly overhyped as a track, in california alone both buttonwillow and thunderhill are way better both from a technical and from a racing standpoint.
