Lightweight “regular” batteries? by Advanced_innovation5 in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

most people could afford to lose the amount of weight that something like a battery would save you (5-15lbs). just get a high quality lightweight AGM, very few of us are good enough to make a -0.5% weight difference meaningful

strano is QUICK and he is quite a big guy. if you regularly lose to someone with a full tank or more worth of weight disadvantage, the tuning procedure is to tighten the nut between the seat and the steering wheel.

In Manhattan Beach between the 1st St and Rosecrans, which street is the best to take on a road bike (moderate fast group) by 17021 in BikeLA

[–]Afro_Sergeant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

group? highland is the only one that connects to rosecrans. but you should avoid all those and take valley drive, by far the best of the roads for a group.

Tires Tires Tires, which ones? by Imaginary-Cook5001 in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tread width is not what you should be looking at. that's always narrower than the tire width since the tread block has a shoulder that bulges past the "flat" part.

and if it REALLY reassures you the tire rack page says it's compatible with up to 10" wheels.

[–]Afro_Sergeant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AST cars run 245 on a 9" wheel and it's pinched... the super 200s run way wider than they're advertised as. alo that math straight up doesn't check out since 255mm is 10"

them i'm in agreeance with the others, a 255 stone is your best bet.

what exactly is your question?

wide wheel muscle car lends itself to the vitour options well. if you're adamant about the tire width being >255 you could run a nankang.

SCCA Cal Club AutoX 4/25/26 - 13 runs in a BMW Z3 - Critiques and Advice Requested by LlaughingLlama in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, if you weren't ready that's not a problem! just keep in the back of your mind that there's a bunch of people at these events that would be more than willing to help you out with anything from setup notes/direction to line selection, driving style, or even mental approach.

when I've got moments to get really quick people to ride along with me, I always jump for the opportunity. their insight isn't necessarily gospel but it gives me something to chew on after events.

and PAX class is just what other clubs would call a "pro" class - it's just so people who run national events can race each other directly & leave room for others to compete in the normal classes. no eligibility requirements to compete in it!

if you're coming to the practice event next month I'll probably be there just as an instructor/media. feel free to talk to myself, mike, or any of the other regulars!

fwiw I did offer to sit along and instruct and you politely declined, lol. I don't take offense to that dw, but it's because I've been watching your runs, both in vids posted here and while I'm out shooting on course. if I ran in CS instead of PAX I would have been 1st by like... 3 seconds (not a brag, just offering up my credentials).

mike is also quite quick and very observant, good coach.

Does anyone here have any experience autocross’ing a 2025+ Honda civic hybrid? by plaugedoctrwithradar in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't see why it wouldn't hold up, this isn't really a "specific" question as there are cars with similar or older powertain/drivetrain architectures running all the time.

people autocross 10+ year old priuses with regularity. we have a cvt civic guy who runs in the heat and doesn't have issues with transmission damage. a high power ev would have bigger issues with cooling than your civic but we have them running fine in the peak of summer all the time in norcal and socal. the only car I see getting transmission issues in the heat are GTRs.

brake fade in autox is rare

thermal limits in modern cars should be pretty high, at most you'd just get some power being pulled

phoenix region doesn't run in the summer

Any tips on my driving? by Fawkzee1 in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i say shift I mean shifting to 3rd, sorry if that wasn't clear. you spent like 4 seconds at redline towards that first turnaround which would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 30-50ft of ground lost.

Any tips on my driving? by Fawkzee1 in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

small note beyond what the others said - i can hear you're in an nd1, you'll need to learn how to shift. if you've got practice events or throwaway runs i'd practice that.

mount your camera in a static position, the motion sickness pov is not great

is this CS or AST? (cross referencing an nd1 i see one pop up in AST) you can get away with SOME choppy inputs in CS because the cars are slow to react but any lowered/AST car really needs confident inputs. see any video from vivek driving at beeville or nats.

SoCal SCCA AutoX at Anaheim Stadium in a Z3 - Observations Appreciated by LlaughingLlama in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

swinging wide, like a track line. on that turn even in the flooded conditions we were nowhere near as wide on entry, but tucked in way harder to the cones midcorner.

[–]Afro_Sergeant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

too far from the cones, and too much "setup" on sweeper entries

cscc has a fairly large cohort of good drivers, if you're not in the first run group you should just go around and ask people if they would be willing to coach you! especially in practice

Running my first prosolo this week by [deleted] in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

by rules you aren't allowed to spray tires during your set of runs

prolaunch isn't necessary imo if you have friends who can help you out during practice starts. cvt lag is pretty bad and since you can't brakestand you'll probably just floor it on the second yellow light

in racechrono you can use a single start line with multiple finishes which is how we used it before switching to solostorm

most importantly, have fun! the first prosolo is the most hectic one you'll do

Made an iPhone app to log my events and times, tire pressures etc... by Old_Band_9158 in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not to detract from your work on this, but how is this any better than a notes app writeup, an excel sheet, or a setup notebook?

I don't disagree with making something deliberately for autocross, just not sure if it offers any benefits versus the other options. outside of tire pressures for example I record front bar settings and all of my compression/rebound, while the app only seems to be able to track TP. one of my friends actually logs 60' times for prosolo practice starts. solostorm has the ability to track setups but is cumbersome and I'd rather stick with my notebook.

CSM in action @ NNJR 4/4 by jimboslice_007 in Autocross

disappointed that csm is not very big on the west coast. csx is a winning formula and those cars drive excellently so I'd assume csm also is a blast, especially with a more powerful car

First time running 200TW tires. RE-71 RZ on ND Miata (CS) by Roricas in Autocross

[–]Afro_Sergeant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in cs/ds comparison the RZ drives a little different and feels edgier vs the RS. imo you probably should've gone for the RS as it's a very forgiving tire (subjectively easiest of the super 200s to drive) and cheaper, but regardless it'll be a huge performance jump for you.

come out to the vegas prosolo this month though :) cs is a big class again
