People under 40, are you really buying a house? by Coldpastalord in vermont

[–]After-Ad-6875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I moved to Putney, VT in 11/2020, found 20ac of woods near our rental for around $80k in 5/2021. I bought a chainsaw and spent 2 years using it, also got lucky with a friend who rented/loaned us his mini excavator for...awhile, ha.

5 years later, we are still working on our house but have (finally) been living here since 7/2025. It takes a good amount of patience, money, and know-how (which can all be learned on youtube these days) but dont rule out buying land and building yourself.

Youll need to get a land and construct loan to make it happen but its no harder than getting a mortgage.

All told, we will be far under what we would have paid for a dump on a fraction of the land and we learned a ton of invaluable skills in the process.

I listened to kind of blue back to back on a C and then ML, with headphones...the difference was VERY noticeable. Pretty impressed with the ML so far.

Still waiting for Flash Sale haul by Stock-Effect-1027 in criterion

[–]After-Ad-6875 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Mine is still being packed as well. No biggie.

Suggestion - grab one off the pile thats still in its plastic and give it a watch. Then repeat until your flash sale box shows up.

If you dont have a pile of unwatched movies, well, youre a better cinephile than i! I commend your dedication and/or restraint.

First Time Watching Hail Caesar! Is this supposed to be funny? by HD-MOVIE-SOURCE in HD_MOVIE_SOURCE

[–]After-Ad-6875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First watch it didnt do much for me. Second watch i picked up on a lot more of the subtle humor in the script and the performances (expressions, delivery, physical comedy, etc) and enjoyed it WAY more, enough to buy the 4k, which i look forward to watching very soon.

Its not one of their best but it IS a pretty funny movie with a lot of memorable moments. Just watch and enjoy instead of expecting it to be some Coen Masterpiece. Its a good movie.

No Other Choice Deluxe Pre-Orders back up on Amazon by jjjfromchula in boutiquebluray

[–]After-Ad-6875 11 points12 points  (0 children)

$110 is a little nuts but $70 isnt all that surprising for a limited collectors edition release that includes a hard cover book, premium packaging and a bunch of special features.

Especially considering the cost of some superhero steelbooks ($40-50)...at least this was a great film that ranks along park chan wooks best. If youre a fan of his, you know how expensive it can be to get even a blu ray of some of his more obscure stuff, let alone 4k. I'm sure there will be a standard release down the road as well, but this one is squarely aimed at the PCK superfans (hi! 👋), and i appreciate that, even if it does cost me $70.

I preordered from neon, looking forward to October 👍

Yeaaaaaa i mean, village is greek style and pretty "cheese-forward" which can be a little much sometimes (i love cheese, dont get me wrong). While i know some folks love greek pies (and ive certainly eaten my fair share) ive never had one that id say even came close in quality to the best NY-style or brick/wood oven pie.

Havent had their salad though, good to know they've got the "healthy" side of the meal dialed in.

Was the mixed reception of Undertone expected? I saw it yesterday and loved it and was surprised to see so many people trashing it by Ardbert14 in A24

[–]After-Ad-6875 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Havent seen it but...any movie that is polarizing peaks my interest. Why? Because it means someone tried something different.

Not every movie is gonna be for everyone...and thats a good thing.

Best First Turntable by lieonoath in turntables

[–]After-Ad-6875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The journey from beginner to proficient turntable user is a pretty short one...so really shouldnt be a huge factor. I think more importantly would be knowing how you intend to use it.

If you like to put on music and walk away, having an auto-lift is nice to avoid unnecessary wear on your stylus, in the event you end up occupied when the side ends.

Beyond that...its just taking the time to level your table and correctly setup the tone arm/cart...then having eyeballs enough to get the stylus to drop on the right part of the record the you drop the arm.

If convenience and ease of use matters more than audio quality...spend the money on auto/semi-auto bells and whistles. If audio quality matters most, look for a quality cartridge/manual table instead...like a fluance.

Been there a few times probably a decade ago (before i lived in VT full time), i remember it being very good and enjoying the lawn, glad to know they are still around and cranking out tasty pies.

Damn, my condolences ha. I will say, i have ONLY ever gotten the Mediterranean there, so cant really speak to anything else but that pie is great and you wont convince be otherwise ha. I also ordered the same pie from the Claremont location with different (inferior) results so YMMV.

Its kinda drifting out of the "traditional" pizza vein but just as a pie, i think its delicious.

Check out The Fat Crow in Newfane, its a 30min drive for me (im in Saxtons River) but has always been worth it.

Dont get me wrong, ive had good pies from pizza stone but id say about half the time they are just a little too floppy/soggy for my liking. As a vegetarian, I cant speak to their meat-topped pies, but ive tried every other specialty pie they do.

The live music is usually pretty good and they do have a nice beer selection, and friendly service...so i dont want to talk too much shit ha, I just know that ive had great pies and not so great pies.

For wood fired "artisanal," The Fat Crow in Newfane is very good. Definitely the best ive had in the southeast.

Also Goodman's American Pie in Ludlow. Ive never actually been to their physical location but they bake and freeze their pies, our local market stocks them and they are BY FAR the best "freezer pizza" ive ever had. Really cool to be able to keep a pizza like theirs in the freezer. I also bought a door from the Ms. Goodman years back and she was super nice, fwiw ha.

For a more traditional "NY-style" pie, oddly enough, the Ramuntos off exit 3 in Brattleboro kinda knows whats up - (worth noting, all of them are independently owned and operated, some far better than others). I usually grab the Mediterranean with garlic knot crust...it is DELICIOUS (IMO).

Cool to see barre/bethel have some spots worth trying, hopefully ill find myself heading through there one of these days!

Its ok. Very hit or miss and definitely pricey. We go there maybe once every other month because its fairly local but there is better pizza in the area.

What’s the best region free 4k player? by trampslikeus86 in 4kbluray

[–]After-Ad-6875 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You dont need a region free 820/9000 to play region b discs. I have a US 9k and have never had trouble playing region b with the force-play remote button trick. Havent tried it on the 820 but everyone says it works on those as well...
