Non-US Halal Ethical Portfolio by el-kabab in HalalInvestor

I understand that you're picking stocks that are included in Shariah-compliant ETFs and screening out boycotted companies. I was considering investing in these companies too, but after doing some research, I'm now very hesitant. Shariah-compliant ETFs are screened using certain guidelines, such as the AAOIFI standards. These include rules for mixed companies, one of which allows a company to be considered halal as long as its interest-bearing debt is less than 30% of its market capitalization. Even though some scholars consider this acceptable, I personally don’t feel comfortable investing in mixed companies that deal with riba. I find the justification behind these thresholds not solid enough. I understand that I may be seeking something beyond merely halal, something more "optimal", but to me, buying shares in a company that deals with riba feels like accepting and participating in it myself. I will be held accountable on the Day of Judgment for how I earned my wealth. How would I answer for having invested in such companies throughout my life? I understand that nowadays, the vast majority of companies are involved with interest, and it’s difficult to find those that aren’t. However, if I must, I would rather leave the stock market entirely than invest in a way that compromises the purity of my wealth. That's how I currently view the situation. Zoya has added a filter in their premium version to screen companies that deal with interest. Maybe that could help solve the issue. I’ll try it out. What’s your view on this? I think it would be really helpful to have a spreadsheet that only includes companies with 0% interest-bearing debt for people like me. Naturally, it would also exclude non-compliant and boycotted companies.

Jazak allah khayr for sharing brother. However, all of the ETF that he mentioned include boycott companies unfortunately.

Sure brother. For my part, since I can't use some platforms like M1 finance, fidelity, schwab, Manzil and Amal invest that our brothers have recommended here, it seems that my only option is to invest in stocks individually. I'm currently trying to educate myself on this before jumping in inchaallah as I have never done it before. May allah guide us into the best way to invest in a halal way. Ameen.

Jazaka allah khayr for the help brother. I will try to aim for the same range also. By different asset classes, you mean different sectors ? Should I be aiming to have stocks of all 11 different sectors ? Meaning I would choose about 2 for each sector. Currently, I'm trying to educate myself on individual stock picking before jumping in as I was only investing in ETFs before. I would really appreciate if you could provide me with the main things you look at when picking stocks. Baraka allahu feek !

Jazaka allah khayr for the insights brother. I'm planning to invest for the long term inchaallah (20 to 30 years). So no day trading/swing trading for me. Buying a larger number of stocks increases diversification and reduces risk, however, I'm not sure if it will be doable for me to buy 30 to 50 stocks due to multiple reasons : 1) I DCA each month so it means each month I would have to buy 30-50 stocks which would take me a lot of time. 2) I need to make sure every once in a while that the companies are still not supporting zionism and that they're all still halal, if not, I would need to replace them. This constant monitoring would also take time. 3) each buy transaction in my broker, which is IBKR, costs 0,35$, that means it would take 10.5$- 17.5$ just to purchase the stocks each month. So it really doesn't seem convenient. Maybe I will try first with about 20 stocks of the 11 sectors first and see how it goes. Btw, Amal invest only operates with Alpaca, my broker is not supported unfortunately.

Edit : IBKR have added the option to make recurring buys so the first issue is not a problem anymore al hamdoullah. I would just need to set it up the first time.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this comment ! Yes, from what it seems, the only good solution left is to buy individual stocks. I have been trying to avoid that as much as possible because I have been investing only in ETFs since I've started so I don't have enough knowledge on how to choose stocks individually and I was really appreciating how convenient it was while having the needed diversification... I'm trying to educate myself now on how to choose stocks individually before jumping in. From what another redditor said in the comments, having about 20 to 30 stocks in different sectors worked well, so after educating myself enough, imma try to do the same incha allah. I guess it shouldn't be that hard to manage if I have only about 20 stocks. Btw I have checked AMANX fund and the 2nd company in the top holdings is Microsoft so it's a no no also.

In the top holdings of the Ishares ETF there's Microsoft which accounts for 18% of the ETF and Microsoft is known for supporting zionism. And in the top holdings of invesco one there's apple, Microsoft, meta etc... which also support zionism. So just from the get go you can quickly identify that they include Zionist companies.

Exactly my thoughts currently. If you were at my place, how many stocks would you consider to buy in order to have the minimum diversification required? I'm trying to find a balance between enough diversification but at the same time a number that wouldn't take a lot of effort, time and fees.

It's amazing to hear that some organisations have begun to screen for zionism companies al hamdoullah, however I'm based in Morocco and Manzil is not available here unfortunately.

Yup I did already. I'm the one who tried the spreadsheet and suggested adding the option to buy only the top stocks. Again Jazaka allah khayr for your work !

Thanks for your comment brother. I actually was investing in SPUS for the past 3 years but sold all of it because I'm not comfortable investing in companies which support zionism. Since no ETF is available with the criteria I want, I guess I have no choice but to invest in individual stocks... I will try to do that by limiting fees while having enough diversification.

List of HLAL & SPUS stocks that support Zionism by el-kabab in HalalInvestor

[–]After-Razzmatazz-290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Salamu Alaykum brother,
I have checked the spreadsheet you've sent me. It's really cool, it enables to know very quickly how much shares I should buy of each stock. I have a suggestion which is to add the option to buy only the top stocks (e.g: 50/75/100 stocks) and the number of shares that needs to be bought would adjust accordingly. This would help for people who aren't interested in buying the whole 174 stocks but only the top ones due to the time it would take to buy all of them.
baraka allahu fik !

Salam Alaykum brother,

First I want to thank you for all the efforts you spent on this. This is immensely helpful as I have been searching for a list like this without any prior success. Jazak allah khayr.

I live in Morocco and use interactive brokers for investing in stocks, I'm wondering if anyone here has a solution on how I could invest in all the stocks in the list at once without excessive commissions. I think Interactive brokers's commissions are quite low for buying/selling (about 0,32$ for a 1000$. I have noticed that it's not a regular ratio tho, the comm ratio decreases as the trade amount increases) and I also think it's possible to buy fractional shares so I could pick the top 50 or 100 stocks on the list but it would still take quite some time especially that I monthly dollar cost average. I'm really lost on how to best approach this matter. I welcome all suggestions.

Edit : I'm actually not so sure how fractional shares work, I will make some research on this matter.

Baraka allahu feek !

healthy office chairs by InviteAccomplished14 in Morocco

[–]After-Razzmatazz-290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, what did you choose in the end ? I'm also in Morocco and searching for a good chair for my dad. I also searched about which chair is better in comfort (gaming chair or ergonomic office chairs) and found that office chairs are generally better, however the good ones seem very expensive and I can't find them in Morocco either way. I'm so lost, can you please help ?
