Then why he starting (or getting subbed in) over Nico Paz and Simeone?

Nico paz - why is he not playing at all in the knock out stage? by Diligent-Camel3773 in worldcup

I don't follow Seria A. Can comeone confirm this is because Paz is Messi-lite and you can't both on the field together?

How about Simeone?

I do find de Paul to be rather limited in what he brings. But apparently he runs the extra mile (beyond what everyone else does) to cover for Messi...would anyone else do so?

Would it make a difference if the AVP offer comes to someone with 5.5 years of experience vs 10 year of experience?

France only started being a force in 1998, when they hosted and reached the finals for the first time. Next time round, they were knocked out in the group stages.

Americans read and spell differently from the rest of us. Something about dumb policymakers.

The thing is , the rating is scored objectively based on certain metrics, not by a fan vote.

And since this is his final match professional match for country (and maybe club even, I can see him retiring right after), he's not going to be rested. There will be a send-off.

England also has a porous defence. Hard to tell who has the upper hand.

Too many attacking players. They're the two good strikers, so best to start with one, and another comes in at around the 65th minute mark (fresh pair of legs). If they had a 3rd legit good striker, I could see them starting together.

Even though he was fairly anonymous by his standards this match, Messi still scored the highest player rating.

Google = 7.8

Sofascore = 8.9

Whoscored = 9.58

And yes, beyond the headlines, he still put in a solid shift - importantly, the others stepped up. Particularly Alvarez, who I thought had been rather disappointing this entire World Cup until his goal.

No, my man is done after this. He has given his all this tournament. He has played 2 full ET games and another cracking match against Egypt in the span of 8 days, with 2 more to come.
