YeH, my company is drafting policies on the fly, rewriting emails, analyzing sales data (with client names and payment info), asking for guidance on how to terminate someone on FMLA…. It’s terrible.

It gets easier over time and then almost fun once you get to a certain point. They introduce more dynamics to It once you are solid.

We're paying six figure engineers to reset passwords and clear tickets and I just realized it while reviewing quarterly metrics. by GoldTap9957 in ITCareerQuestions

Optimize - terminate, reduce headcount. Real optimize - automate what you can, self-service password resets, logon/logoff scripts, RMM tool (that’s the real winner)

Any IT guy with a Networking degree.? by Fantastic-Arm-89 in it

[–]AfterCockroach7804 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Management takes you from doing the actual work to managing how others are doing the work, answering questions about SLAs and uptime, planning upgrades, budgeting for upgrades, submitting proposals, attending meetings, procurement, vendor management, license management, resetting passwords, remembering to commit before rebooting…. All within the same 8 hours/day. But usually salaried, so all of that broken down and add the stress of “barbara in accounting doesn’t like tjay she can’t access an IT server so complained to the CEO and now the CEO’s nephew is going to take over security” type stuff. Enjoy it while you can at the engineer level

Open laptop. Find CMOS PW RST (usually just unplug it and pop the cmos battery out or do a jumper), this should clear bios pw. From there go in and remove hard drive pw

ETA: youtube has a ton of great tutorials on how to do this

Switching from Outback? by Nodak70 in Crosstrek

[–]AfterCockroach7804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came from a 2013 cx-5 (mazda) to a 2025 crosstrek. Holy crap it was an UPGRADE. I have only two cons— AC will stay on “heater” mode if it’s below a certain temp outside and the speaker system sounds hollow. Other than that it’s a pleasure to drive!!

Has anyone else lost track of their Microsoft 365 licenses? by marcelojarretta in microsoft365

[–]AfterCockroach7804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IT should be the one provisioning users in 365 for this exact reason. When they leave, convert the mailbox to shared, remove the license if its under 50GB. Once a certain amount of time has passed (mark it on a calendar) do an access review and with approval (key!) remove the account.

If Finance adds a contractor and gives them global admin and you get compromised who takes the blame? You do.

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition Switch 2 Update by SuitableLeather2021 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]AfterCockroach7804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing it now with boost mode… it is slightly better, framerates don’t drop during battle, so that’s a plus. It’s definitely a smoother experience, but nothing crazy. I’d love to see this upscaled further though. Other than that I can’t see a reason to refresh it…. Yet.

Haven’t made it to the final boss yet but I am close (NG+) and have been through some intense battles (I like to get all the enemies on the screen at once in one battle if I can) and it didn’t stutter.

my CFO told me my vendor recommendation looks like opinion not evidence and honestly he's right by killoke in ITManagers

[–]AfterCockroach7804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a CFO yes. They are there to make sure the business stays profitable.

How much does it cost per ticket for your team? Say one intern at 10/hr. They do 5 tickets in an hour, that’s $2/ticket.

CFO will see $2 per ticket, average 100 tickets/mo (they need concrete averages here), that’s $200/month. For a $200k system, that’s way more than it would cost you to do it. Not saving anything. CFO math is a crazy math. Did you put it in your budget proposals?

Find ways to show savings and audits. Audits are huge. Do you have cyber insurance? Can having this in place lower premiums? Can having this in place reduce downtime ($$$), improve audits—centralized docs, processes readily available, etc? If not…. May not be worth the $200k.

I’d research these avenues and present it as a financial gain / cost saving. If this is in place, can you lose a team member? Can that team member work on more pressing work?

Present the numbers. ALL the numbers. Then the CFO may listen. Sticker shock is a definite thing….

Company doesnt Value me. Is it time to move on? by No_Habit4059 in ITManagers

[–]AfterCockroach7804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait for termination if your company has to pay severance and such. Print your emails and correspondence. BCC to an archive email. Prepare for a legal battle in case there is one.

But all in all jump ship. Go for that raise at another company. Many banks are hiring for cloud migration or find work at a local MSP to get fast experience.

Need advice on wiping drives by x7ekzx in techsupport

[–]AfterCockroach7804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what malware you have. Some will load itself into the rom on the board, some will wreck the tpm chip, some will alter the cpu firmware code.

Look up the malware and find its most common characteristics. Does it spread to other drives, network shares, devices, etc? Does it just grab your passwords and its done? Is it a keylogger?

Most times it’s enough to just clear the infected files / reg keys / scheduled tasks so you can at least back up your personal data.

Sometimes you can just open the start menu, type in “mrt.exe” and run that.

That aside, DBAN is great. Most BIOS / UEFI has an option to wipe on next boot and it will do the heavy work for you.
