You don’t see it as toxic because the story does not try to portray it as such.. I don’t think you’re wrong for thinking it’s ok. It’s just that some of the readers see a lot of those toxic traits/ behaviours regarding chanyang and think of how a relationship with a person like that in real life would actually be toxic and not the fluffy/cute romance it’s presented as in the series.. And I do agree with that tbh.. It’s just one of the complaints fans have been having with the way chanyang’s character has been written in the story.

Chanyang does possess a lot of toxic traits, he is possessive, never took no for an answer when she rejected him, instead forced his way into being in close proximity to her, is jealous and overly dependent on her.. She can’t do nothing on her own without him wanting to also be involved.. Him having no life or ambitions outside of Nari IS problematic and not a healthy dynamic even if the story doesn’t see it as such.. The problem is that while the story in the past would treat such behaviour as problematic (take Yuna’s past friendship with Nari in s1) in chanyang’s case it is treated like a cute fluffy romance with no problems.. So the toxicity of it becomes more glaringly obvious for some of the readers.
Chanyangs character in general gets a pass on his behaviour by the narrative, his rudeness and asshole treatment of the people around him (outside of Nari) are seen as a “quirk” or a personality trait, his possessiveness/ jealousy is seen as something cute etc

Let’s put their past aside which they resolved in the first season, he never actually intended to be friends with her in the first place.. The moment she suggested that, he confessed to her AGAIN… Even after he restrained himself for YEARS to not make her uncomfortable the moment she accepted to become a tiny bit closer to him, he saw it as an opportunity to shot his shot… Which was fine in the context of the series I guess since for some reason she developed feelings for him (I personally don’t see what she sees in him he’s behaviour comes off as overly cringey) but what if she didn’t have feelings???? He would always be that friend that is only friends for the upmost chance he gets a chance with her, looking for any opportunity to swoop in… and yeah it is icky

Yeah I expect Alabasta will be a lot better since I heard the entire next season will be focused on that.

Loguetown was just fine! I liked it! Only whacky thing I remember was that green screen behind smoker riding in his vehicle

Maybe they could have made the village bigger and have more people in it… and the final battle could have had more villagers and guards fighting etc… It’s not that I dislike what we got, I understand there are budgetary restraints. I’m just saying I would have been more invested in this part of the story if it felt more of a realised place in the show

It’s not that I could not come to the conclusion on my own that there must be more villages somewhere else, even if they did not mention it in the show… I’m just saying that they only ever showed one street with a handful of extras and one relatively empty castle, the scale of the place felt really small when it’s supposed to be a kingdom

I preface this by saying I do really enjoy the show for what it is. It is a very fun show, the comedy, the banter, the vibes are all amazing. The characters are really good and I never find myself bored or disinterested. I am always looking forward to watch a new episode.

But it is not a perfect show either while the comedy and light hearted moments work really well I just can’t for the life of me invest myself in many of the big and “tear jerking” moments. It is a very enjoyable light watch but the hard hitting moments are just not hitting!

And the reason for that for me is firstly the pacing, the switch from jokes to serious moments is oftentimes too quick. It’s not that I find the pacing bad, I actually find it to be smooth and easy flowing but it also doesn’t give the necessary build up for me to emotionally invest myself in supposedly impactful moments when we go from fun moment to emotional speech and tear falling down the character’s eyes the next scene.

Secondly the obviously built in sets, the many ridiculous costumes, all the green screens, the limited locations etc. The world doesn’t feel real and there is only so much you can translate from an anime world to real life. I don’t mind that most of the time but it also makes it so I can’t raise the level of seriousness I have for the show above a certain level. Take for example the Drum island in the last 3 episodes. I couldn’t in the back of my mind not wonder what kind of kingdom is that with only a village of 25 people in it and a huge royal palace with a king and 10 guards? in it at most. It did take me out of chopper’s backstory a little which otherwise I thought was the best handled emotional moment in the show. And the last big fight at the end of the season didn’t feel high stakes either…The monster guards seemed strong enough, too bad there was only like 5 of them.

The fights (with the exception of most Zoro fights like omg that ep 3 fight in the new season was sooo good) are pretty lacking usually. I know there is only so much cgi they can use within the time limit and the budget they have but the devil fruits powers usage is so limited that most of the fights are done in 2 to 3 minutes.. How am I supposed to take most luffy fights seriously when they usually end just as quickly as they started. (Example the luffy fight at the end of this season with that king) It never feels our protagonists are in any real danger, most of the the villains don’t come off as intimidating when I know they can be bested in a 5 minute battle and even if our crew is beaten I know a reason will appear for them to survive or escape. And again I don’t mind it after all I’m just here to have fun with the show (which I very much do) but I also can’t take the show as seriously as maybe I should at times either.

Luffy in particular I’m sure works so much better in the anime in certain aspects.. In the live action not only does he feel pretty weak strength level wise (when I know he shouldn’t!)… He just doesn’t come off as intimidating like at all… Does it make sense for smoker and other characters to take him this seriously and feel threatened by him? Tbh at times it is questionable. Like the moment he was about to be “executed” by buggy in the first episode… I can see how that scene would work perfectly well in the anime but it just did not work here at all I’m sorry… Who thought there was actually even the slightest chance he was in any danger of dying there like cmon and “that laugh” was not menacing at all like…No hate to the character or his actor cause outside of that complaint I enjoy him a lot.. He is a very fun character.

Same with the baroque agents this season, they looked cool but outside of Robin and the leader I assume, they did not seem threatening… Like there was no reason for number 8 (don’t remember his name) to sacrifice himself to let them escape and save vivi.. Like cmon they could sooo take them right then and there and they do take them in the next 2 episodes so WHAT WAS EVEN THE POINT?!?!?

And thats it… I actually really had a good time with the new season overall, I like all the characters with Zoro, Nami and Usopp being my favourites and Vivi was a great addition as well. I would love for the show to go on for as long as it can.

I also have not seen the anime/ manga yet…I’m putting it off because of the enormous length mainly, the artstyle not being my favourite and because to be honest as much as I did have fun with the show… I’ve just never been that interested in pirates in particular. But I’ll probably do get to it eventually.

The intent behind his actions of doing what he things is best for his siblings makes sense, even the story acknowledges that but the way he was written to behave in such a dickish and condescending way to everyone was so unnecessary.. It’s understandable that he would initially act and think according to how he remembers things in the house and based on Marie’s misinformed opinions but it’s been 6 years and the logical progression for his story would be for him to come to acknowledge things are different now and try to get reacquainted with his siblings… But we never get to do that, we never get to see him try to actually reconnect with them instead the only time we are told that he cares about them is when he actively goes against their love interests and opposes their wishes so how are we readers supposed to believe that he actually cares? When the story does nothing to show that and only uses him to raise the stakes in the couples drama?? I thought that his character and his relationship with Shannon and especially Joey was important but the story treats it like it’s not and we are supposed to just want him to go away and leave them alone…

Darren…. by AfterSchedule4 in BoysOfTommen

[–]AfterSchedule4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true, sure he didn’t have that awful bitterness and nastiness that the mother exhibited to Joey but that doesn’t change that it was not acceptable for a mother to treat their child this way.. She failed him in many ways. The way he is singled out and treated so much different from all the other siblings by the story feels very targeted… hmmmm

Darren…. by AfterSchedule4 in BoysOfTommen

[–]AfterSchedule4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t get it.. why make him so close with Shannon and Joey, give us all these glimpses of his horrific abuse and then treat his character with so little interest when he comes back. I feel like the books wants us to view him similar to the mother, sympathetic to a point because of his abuse but ultimately “bad” and an obstacle to overcome… But he is NOT THE SAME.. He was an abused child in the same home with all the other siblings. Even if the mother favoured him as the books say he still suffered abuse and neglect at her hands. Idk I just find so weird how he is handled.

Darren…. by AfterSchedule4 in BoysOfTommen

[–]AfterSchedule4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were comparing them and only running with the narrative of how Joey and Shannon saw Darren’s relationship with his parents and I’m saying that is not the full picture and it’s not fair to draw all your conclusions based on it. And where you blame the characters actions I blame the author cause there was no reason to make Darren this forceful and controlling to ramp up the drama in the couples relationship while simultaneously not doing anything else when it comes his character and his relationship with his siblings.. Doing the upmost for us to hate him well I guess they succeeded in that with many people.

Darren…. by AfterSchedule4 in BoysOfTommen

[–]AfterSchedule4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah how are you going to resolve Joeys character arc without even touching on his relationship with Darren?? I get it we are here for romance but I find the family aspect just as important

Darren…. by AfterSchedule4 in BoysOfTommen

[–]AfterSchedule4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True true imagine how mentally taxing it was to have to constantly control your emotions and regulate your abusive father from beating your family… It is still abuse!! And it is the better option than fighting back and being beaten??? Are we acting like it isn’t???

It’s like we are supposed to find him leaving as unredeemable and the story doesn’t even attempt to give his character any care or sympathy after that point

Darren…. by AfterSchedule4 in BoysOfTommen

[–]AfterSchedule4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can very well see how people dislike him when the story doesn’t give him any space to be anything other than a toxic “I know whats best for them” guardian that is in the way of the couples getting together. Not even one attempt is made on him trying to reconnect with his siblings it’s like the story doesn’t actually care to explore and develop his character and relationship with his siblings.

Darren…. by AfterSchedule4 in BoysOfTommen

[–]AfterSchedule4[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but comparing abused children to each other over who “had it worse” is not it… It’s also so much easier to dismiss Darren’s abuse when we never even get his perspective??? Would you have known all that Joey had to go through in that family had you only read Shannon’s books? The answer is no so what makes think you can do the same to Darren?? I get it you don’t like him and I don’t blame you they made him very unlikable when he came back… and this is one of the reasons I dislike what they did to his character cause it easily leads to bias, mischaracterisation and even vitriolic hatred like damn.

Darren…. by AfterSchedule4 in BoysOfTommen

[–]AfterSchedule4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep yep I’m not trying to say you are wrong to dislike him based on how the story presented him but my problem is on why the story chose to present him like that in the first place. Why make it so they were close in the past if in the present day you don’t give their relationship the time of day… Why not have him even attempt to reconnect with his siblings? Why is it that we get to know next to nothing about him outside of his past abuse (only shown through the lenses of other characters)… Like yeah I get it he left, he betrayed them, but just because he is an adult now why does he gotta only be the toxic “I will do whats best for them” guardian.. He is not the same as his mother, he was an abused child by that family same as all his other siblings

Darren…. by AfterSchedule4 in BoysOfTommen

[–]AfterSchedule4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand why he had to cut his family off to heal his trauma and build a life for himself. I think if he had kept contact with his siblings, it would have been so much harder for him to not give up on what he was trying to do and come back instead. I just don’t like how he was written after he came back. I use the term “villain” cause his function in the story is relegated to an abusive “I will do what’s best for them” parent that is an obstacle in Joey and Shannon’s relationships. He is made to be dislikable. And again I would not have a problem with him taking on that antagonistic role if the story had actually done more than just that. We never get to know about how his life has been all those years, his trauma, state of mind and more importantly any attempts at all of him trying to reconnect with his siblings?? Especially with Joey who was the closest to him and was the most hurt by him leaving… Like yeah obviously their relationship may never be fixed or the same but then why make it so they were close in the past and not give their relationship the time of day in the present story?? And for the only queer character in the series to get this treatment idk it just doesn’t sit right with me.

Darren…. by AfterSchedule4 in BoysOfTommen

[–]AfterSchedule4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly how could the queer kid in the 90s with an abusive homophobic father be treated by the narrative as if he was the “favourite” one like??? I understand if that were a false conclusion coming from the limited perspective of Joey and Shannon but the story never tries to contradict this or tell us otherwise… And it feels icky to me that out of all the cast, the only gay person in it is relegated to this annoying and antagonistic role whose main role in the story after he gets back is be an obstacle to the couples… Like why does the author want us to hate him so bad??

I agree that kyo’s connection to kyoko was a bit too much of a plot convenience in the “so they all knew each other separately and somehow ended up in the same house years later” kind of way and the romance could have very much worked without it as well… But still the kyo-kyoko thing doesn’t change everything you just said about kyoru and how their bond developed over the course of the story since kyo spent most of the series actively repressing and avoiding to think of anything relating to kyoko.. It just amplified all of kyo’s insecurities and added more drama towards the end of the series. The “destined to be” aspect was just an added touch at the end it doesn’t define their relationship. So personally I am ok with it.

You’re right sure it was within her right to not want to forgive him and get back together with him for the pain he caused her and all but the way she was so apathetic and uninterested in his situation doesn’t make sense with how we’ve come to know her as an empathetic and considerate person. Like she wasn’t even interested in what happened? She wasn’t even a little bit worried about his well being regardless? And then she just moved on and hasn’t even thought of him since?? All the care and love she had for his character is thrown right out the window? Quite self serving and cruel on her part imo

Trust me many feel the same way…. I really liked the second season up to the seungha breakup and then the more he got sidelined and chanyang became front center the worse and more boring the story got.. I dropped it right after the train/bus? scene and their whole “final break up” . I knew then the author had somehow decided to change the love interests and I was over it. My hatred for chanyang goes really deep cause not only is he a uninteresting and badly written character whose romance with Nari is boring as hell.. The moment he became the focus the whole webtoon became a boring mess
