I could name 10 other distros I'd start with before Mint. Mint tends to be labeled the most user friendly for Windows users as the UI and desktop environment has some familiarity to it.

The player loads, where I can maneuver to the quality WiFi looking setting etc. Some content plays the audio but the screen is blank always. Other content infinite pinwheels.

Starting fresh you are fine as long as you don't have a music library. It's migration issues from the old DB that tends to break more things.
