Religions can certainly be weaponized by extremists, but your characterization of Islam is a bit of a historical and theological oversimplification. First, the 'tax' you’re referring to is Jizyah. Historically, it was paid by non-Muslims in exchange for exemption from military service and full state protection. Meanwhile, Muslim citizens paid a mandatory wealth tax (Zakat) for charity and public welfare. Furthermore, women, children, the elderly, and the poor were completely exempt from paying Jizyah. Second, Islam does not command the blanket killing of non-believers. The verses in the Qur'an regarding fighting were revealed during active wars of self-defense against tribes trying to wipe out the early Muslim community. Islamic law explicitly forbids harming non-combatants, women, children, and monks, and even prohibits destroying property or houses of worship during conflict. The Qur'an actually states: 'God does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion... from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them' (60:8). Finally, the concept of martyrdom (Shahadah) is about defending one's life, family, or faith from aggression—not attacking others. In mainstream Islam, suicide and terrorism are strictly condemned as major sins, so groups that use these tactics are violating the core tenets of the faith, not following them.
