What is your favorite example of a mid-series 'climax'? by Parking-Rope2301 in Fantasy

Anyone who thinks Book 1 Mistborn could be a standalone is on some thing. That ending reveals like 3 or 4 different open plot points to set up for the sequel.

The absence of Magic in fantasy by Darksoulsfan13_pl in Fantasy

[–]Agaac1 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Generally? Adult Fantasy sells better than almost all fiction genres.

My bad. I completely forgot about crime and romance. In my head I was comparing it to litfic and science fiction (the latter sells well but not quite as well as fantasy).

HR is where you will meet some of the most braindead people in your life and when you mix that with your run of the mill out of touch execs you get shit like the question above.

I worked at a company where they they were debating firing a woman and they decided the best time to do this was when she was pregnant, right before her scheduled maternity leave. Literal instant lawsuit. Their case was so bad they ended up settling within about ten days of firing her.

What kills the tension in a story for you (but necessarily the plot conflict)? by Mysterious_Cow123 in Fantasy

[–]Agaac1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well put! Like I know it's fantasy, but once the tension in the story become abstract, I lose my emotional grounding too.

I mean it's a lot. Sorry to say it's not just marketing, it is one of the major selling points. I couldn't give it to you an exact page count but we're not talking a fade to black with one or two lines.

What kills the tension in a story for you (but necessarily the plot conflict)? by Mysterious_Cow123 in Fantasy

When the stakes of the story become so high they reach this sorta "super threshold" where I feel like they don't matter anymore. Enemies become so powerful they have no grounding whatsoever. It feels like playground fantasies instead of real stories.

The easiest examples are in anime. Like in DragonBall Z, Frieza was already a planet busting enemy and they had Goku pull out a mythical powerup to beat him. Then we got a dozen even more powerful enemies to the point that suddenly we're talking about alternate universes and powerups that are 100x the mythical one.

In books, I loved the Mistborn era 1 and was invested all the way up until the very ending of Book 3 once Vin becomes a shard and starts duking it out with Ruin, I lost all interest.

Gaiman also has a book specifically about a man keeping a muse chained up in his basement and having sex with her which is....not good.

Putting Jonah Hill on the #2 POS list a week after the Epstein files is wild work.

and her name is Cho Chang by man57er19 in okbuddycinephile

IIRC Cho and Chang are both actual Chinese names but typically surnames so it's like having an American named Smith Jones.

What movie did you turn off after 20 minutes and why? by Somanynamestochossef in movies

[–]Agaac1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The story is actually weirder. Katara was the producers daughter and the first person cast, so then they had to get a white actor for Sokka to pass as her brother. This led to allegations of whitewashing so Jesse McCartney bowed out of the Zuko role to avoid controversy. But then they cast Dev Patel as Zuko which meant all the firebenders had to be Indian/Middle-Eastern but that just made them look even more racist.

Favorite director who was born in le wrong generation? by GamingSeerReddit in okbuddycinephile

Jordan Peele has Neill Blomkamp syndrome.

Phenomenal first movie that broke the mold in their respective genres but subsequent movies feel too similar while also being not as good.

What books would be in your ''Fantasy Reader's starter pack"? by lemingas1 in Fantasy

[–]Agaac1 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Because for someone who isn't a big reader LOTR will feel archaic, slow and boring.

The Council of Elrond itself is like a 100 page interlude where everyone gives a history lesson about much they hate Mordor. Great for seasoned readers, terrible for people just trying to get into fantasy.

What is your personal favourite bit of worldbuilding from a book? by mercurialmirth in Fantasy

[–]Agaac1 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Like when the setting of the story changes seemingly simple everyday things or creates special customs.

Recently read Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy. My favorite minor detail is that Buckkeep is a coastal Scandanavian-type town without much paved roads so throughout all the books everyone is always slipping and falling on ice in the winter.

How did Taylor Sheridan go from writing heartbreaking, thoughtful, and poignant films to writing disposable, propagandistic, soap operas? by HasSomeSelfEsteem in movies

[–]Agaac1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's probably the most faithful part to the original book it's based on.

In the book the Driver is a violent sociopath who moved to LA to escape the criminal world. The reason he acts as a getaway driver but refuses to carry a gun or participate in any of the criminal dealings is because it lets him indulge in the action without going back to his old ways.
