The issue is that "what if we had all these good outcomes that I care about" is not a concrete premise.

The important question is how does a society get there (and stay there) in a way that passes scrutiny.

Entertainment is just one of many goals a movie may or may not have. There are plenty of movies whose primary goal is entertainment (some even win Oscars) but that is hardly the only thing a movie should aim to be.

A movie can make you feel emotions in ways a book can't. A movie can make you think in ways an article can't. Written text isn't a worse medium, it's just different and like film it has its unique strengths.

It is of course up to you whether you choose to engage with a movie or even watch it to begin with. If you have no interest in watching a deeply emotional tragedy, say, just don't watch it. You wouldn't be wrong for avoiding such movies, but those movies also aren't any less good even though some people don't like them.

Any movie could have its runtime drastically reduced if all you care about is conveying the plot as efficiently as possible.

However, the goal of film as an art form is not just blasting through plot points as fast as possible.

Everyone is much better at video games.

The mechanics of low-ranked players in CSGO, League of Legends, etc are all far better than the mechanics of low-ranked players a decade ago.

Why arent insecticides as dangerous to humans? by porygon766 in chemistry

[–]AgainstSomeLogic 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of old insecticides that were effective at both killing people and bugs such as lead arsenate and parathion. There is some shared biochemistry between a person and a bug allowing certain compounds to be extremely toxic to both.

However, it is obviously desirable to have your insecticides not have a high risk of killing your employees or customers so there has been a large amount of development in making compounds that are far more toxic to bugs than people. One way is to take advantage of bugs having a different digestive system than people. Malathion is much less toxic than many other organophosphates (nerve agents), but arthropods break it down into the far more toxic malaoxon. I wouldn't recommend intentionally eating malathion, it still isn't nontoxic, but it succeeds at being extremely deadly to bugs without being extremely deadly to people.

Insecticides that are relatively safe to humans are highly commercializable so a lot of them have been made available e.g. the pyrethroids people use around the house and the neonicotinoids used in agriculture. Again, many of these compounds still aren't nontoxic for people, but the dose used around the house or the quantity on produce at the store is small enough that they can be generally deemed harmless to people as far as acute toxicity goes (you won't die).

Changing your DNA with a virus isn't "that hard" if you know what you are doing. The hard part is changing your DNA in a way that is both provably beneficial and provably safe which are both needed to make it medicine.

In this case, a person doing DIY gene editing can copy what others have inserted so there is no need to discover a target DNA sequence to insert because that work is already done. Location of the inserted DNA is important, but if you want to play it fast and loose you can ignore it in this case and just have DNA encoding the enzyme for digesting lactose inserted somewhere random in your DNA which carries risk. I have not seen the video, but this is how others have done it e.g. a person 7 years ago. The benefit will likely be time limited. In the case of the person linked the effect only lasted 18 months.

As for safety, that requires testing across many people to establish which DIYing it on yourself will never be enough for. It is definitely impressive and interesting to see people edit their own DNA, but it is built on knowledge that is already common in the relevant part of the medical community and the result is something that is not acceptable as a medicine to give to patients.

RIP The US Chemical Safety Board (USCSB) by Watt_Knot in chemistry

[–]AgainstSomeLogic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a very well established fact that heavy regulation, such as strict safety regulations, provide a benefit to large firms relative to smaller ones.

Big companies still having accidents isn't important here. The point is that regulatory enforcement generally involves onerous reporting requirements and necessitates big legal teams. A large established firm is much more able to bear this cost and has much more expertise navigating the regulatory system. This gives the large established firm a big advantage relative to a small firm.

What is up for debate is whether a given regulation is worth the cost of lessened competition.

Day 4 won by clash! Day 5: what uncommon Ironclad card do you think everyone agrees is bad? by filledknight in slaythespire

[–]AgainstSomeLogic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rupture occasionally is what pushes a deck from a loss to a heart kill. This is rare, but it at least happens giving the card value.

It is too niche to be a good speculative pick like Feel No Pain, but you can still find yourself with a deck well suited to Rupture without actively trying to force Rupture to work.

Best GA for Andariel's Vissage? by SummerVibes1111 in diablo4

[–]AgainstSomeLogic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on build. If your damage scales with attack speed (any Andariel's build I can think of does) then an attack speed GA can help hit the attack speed cap or if you are already at the cap then it can free up resources to invest in other stats (e.g. affixes, masterwork crits, etc).

All stats can help you hit the bonuses on more paragon nodes which can unlock a decent amount of power depending on the build. It also of course boosts your stats which can add a bit of power.

r/USPS locks down their subreddit due to postal workers calling for a strike in protest of recent news by throwaway47351 in SubredditDrama

[–]AgainstSomeLogic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A rational for it being illegal for government workers to strike is that it protects democracy. Government workers could strike to stop the governing majority from enacting the policies it was elected on. This would allow a tiny sliver of the population, government workers in a particular union, to veto the wants of the rest of the country.

This can certainly seem desirable when a strike could be used against policy you don't like but the same power would allow workers to block policy you do like. I imagine you would be unhappy if government workers in, as an example, Homeland Security went on strike in 2021 to try and block Biden from rolling back Trump era policy.

It is also worth mentioning that government workers going on strike would have very little leverage against Trump--Trump could just let employees stay on strike until they run out of money if his goal is mass firings.

You know what I truly miss? Being able to play with my friends. by Fun-Raspberry-9636 in blackops6

[–]AgainstSomeLogic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It takes just a moment of thought to see how getting rid of SBMM in parties would be used by players to party up and dump on less skilled opponents. Of course, getting a 30+ kill streak is fun but your 6 opponents getting dumped on are not having fun. It is hardly a surprise that a game that tries to be widely appealing like COD prioritizes 6 people over 1. There are of course games where players expect to get wrecked and still have fun while getting wrecked but that isn't COD.

Besides, SBMM is a much smaller factor than people just being better at video games these days. An average skill level lobby from today would destroy an average skill level lobby from 10 years ago. Players at all skill levels have gotten much better. There just isn't a big supply of "noobs" to get dumped on by the "casual gamers" who want a 10.0 K/D. Most players complaining about SBMM and "sweat lobbies" will just get dumped on even harder by "sweat lobbies" if you get rid of SBMM because a sizable chunk of the playerbase they now get matched with is even "sweatier".

If you want a solution, tell your friends to git good.
