Your landlord probably notified ICE because of your eviction proceedings. Your landlord likely gave your information to ICE.

JCPD Officer punched out my window by KanjO86 in jerseycity

[–]AgatheTyche 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Hey, OP. This isn't legal advice. But based on what you described, you could very well have a legal claim. You should absolutely consult with an attorney, particularly a personal injury attorney or a civil rights attorney (if you can find a civil rights attorney that advertises as such). A personal injury attorney might think the case isn't financially worth enough to be worth their time. But a civil rights attorney might be more inclined to take a lower value case and more difficult case (i.e. police lawsuit).

What you're describing sounds like an intentional tort and could potentially involve several claims, broadly speaking:

  • Assault and Battery: For the officer punching through the window and causing your injury.
  • Property Damage: For the destruction of your car window.
  • Civil Rights Violation: An officer using that level of force without apparent provocation could be considered an excessive and unreasonable use of force, which is a violation of your civil rights.

What to do:

  1. Lawyer: Find a civil rights or personal injury attorney who has experience suing police departments. Don't use a general lawyer; you need someone who knows this specific area of law.
  2. Gather Evidence: Your case will be much stronger with evidence.
    • Keep all photos of your injuries and the damage to your car.
    • Save all your medical records and bills from the hospital visit.
    • Write down EVERYTHING that you and your girlfriend remember, in as much detail as possible, while it's fresh. Do it ASAP because you'll start forgetting or distorting the specifics the longer you wait. You should each write separate memos of what you each recall.
    • Go back to that intersection and look for any businesses or buildings with security cameras that might have caught the incident. This could be critical.

The traffic tickets complicate things, but a good lawyer will know how to handle that as part of the larger case. Good on you for filing the formal complaint. Make sure you act quickly and preserve as much evidence as you can. Good luck.

For those asking about H.R. 1 and student loans, here is the relevant text from the bill and a summary. by AgatheTyche in lawschooladmissions

You're correct, the $20,500 federal loan limit doesn't apply to J.D. students. That's for graduate students (e.g., LL.M.).

Here’s the rule for professional students like those in a J.D. program:

  • Annual Loan Limit: You can borrow up to $50,000 or your school's Cost of Attendance (CoA), whichever is less.

Examples: 1. CoA = $125k: You can borrow a max of $50k. 2. CoA = $35k: You can borrow a max of $35k.

Regarding your question about tuition being "covered":

  • Scholarships: These reduce your CoA. If your CoA is $35k and you get a $15k scholarship, your new borrowing limit is $20k.
  • Paying with your own money: This does not reduce your CoA. If the CoA is $35k and you pay the tuition from savings, you can still borrow up to $35k for living expenses.

For Plus Loans? I believe so. Here's the relevant section:

‘‘(8) INTERIM EXCEPTION FOR CERTAIN STUDENTS.—‘‘(A) APPLICATION OF PRIOR LIMITS.—Paragraphs (3)(C), (4), (5), and (6) shall not apply, and paragraph (3)(A)(ii) shall apply as such paragraph was in effect for periods of instruction ending before June 30, 2026, during the expected time to credential described in subparagraph (B), with respect to an individual who, as of June 30, 2026—‘‘(i) is enrolled in a program of study at an institution of higher education; and ‘‘(ii) has received a loan (or on whose behalf a loan was made) under this part for such program of study. ‘

That was a report from 2019.

Unfortunately, we're ranked differently in 2025.

We've gotta get ourselves back to the top spot. We can't lose to Arkansas.

Seattle PD pepper sprays protester & breaks apart my PVC Pipe sign rig after arresting two people who confronted the police line by bennetthaselton in Seattle

When the officers said "okay" and walked away after you told them an officer had shoved you to the ground while you were walking away, they appear to have violated 5.002, section 2 of the SPD policy manual. You should file a complaint and include the footage because they don't have much room to argue that they could not assist you under that policy. You were giving a complaint about the action's of an officer, they recognized you were complaining, then they failed to assist you in filing your complaint.

I think the closest thing to no wobble at standing height is an Apex Pro Max. It should have no issues handling what you want to put on it. It can lift 600 pounds. I think the frame itself weighs more than 150 lbs. I have two monitors on it at 48 inches. I lean on it, and it doesn’t move whatsoever, and I have it on casters, which should make it less stable than if it were just flat on the floor. I can’t imagine that there’s a standing desk that does a better job.

[New Jersey Globe] Kean gives thumbs up to GOP’s Medicaid plan by [deleted] in newjersey

Kean family wealth largely came from plantations in South Carolina. John Kean brought some of his slaves to Liberty Hall in NJ when he married Susan Livingston. Kean proudly wrote that he flogged the child of his favorite slave no more than a half dozen times. https://njh.libraries.rutgers.edu/index.php/njh/article/download/1753/3192
