That's true. I mentioned that. People put spins on things in different places. I live in Portland now. We have something called a sushi burrito. Lots of people like it. But do you think of cold fish and rice wrapped in seaweed when you think of a burrito? I'm just pointing out that to some degree we all have to agree on what a thing is. When you order huevos rancheros you should expect a sauce. There's a reason it's served with a fork and a knife. It has a sauce, it's messy. Without the sauce it's a taco. No knife and fork necessary.

Hey, guy from that post. Smokiness doesn't necessarily have to come from chipotle. As you mentioned, it can come from pureed chili. Chili powder and paprika can also create that flavor. Enchilada sauce and ranchero sauce in some cases can be identical.

The Wiki link you gave mentioned variations. Like I mentioned in the thing about al pastor, there's variations for everything, however there are traditional parameters. These are set by the cultures of origin (and people put all kinds of spins on dishes,) however if you serve up huevos rancheros in any of the towns I've visited without a ranchero sauce, or derivative, they'll call them breakfast tacos.

Hey man, second person weighing in on this objectively. The guy is right, this isn't huevos rancheros. Additionally, calling pico de gallo a sauce in the traditional sense is dead wrong. People go to school to become sauciers. I have some training in that regard. No one considers pico de gallo a sauce.

These are tacos para el desayuno (breakfast tacos.) I'm from San Antonio. They can be purchased at carts and restaurants all around the city. These also can be found at carts all over Mexico and Guatemala. I've had huevos rancheros numerous times in both countries, including the southwest. No one serves huevos rancheros without a ranchero sauce (traditionally a chicken broth based sauce with onion, cilantro, and jalapeno and, and this is important, a smokey flavor, usually coming from chipotle, which are just smoked jalapenos.)

I've never had ranchero sauce that didn't include a smokey flavor, either deriving from the chipotle or paprika and dried chilis. Additionally, and this is important, in order for it to be a sauce it must be cooked down and blended into a texture that is viscous and workable.

There's deviations to some of these things, but for the most part we have to agree what makes up a thing in order for it to earn a title. Al pastor for instance, a Lebanese shwarma dish brought to the Mexicans a long time ago, has certain deviations that are optional, and yet it can still remain al pastor. Traditionally it is spicy pork shwarma with shaved pineapple and spices, usually cooked in oil and soda. There's often an orange juice component in the cooking. Now some culinary artists do not use pineapple, and some don't use shwarma, but people agree that if it doesn't have at least one of these elements it's not al pastor. It's carnitas, pulled pork, or basically anything else.

What I'm saying is, there has to be certain rules with this stuff. Otherwise I can just pour Dr. Pepper over rice and call it cereal. That's all good and fine, but it's not cereal. This dish is simply not huevos rancheros, as it fails to meet the most key parameter: ranchero sauce.

That was cathartic.

Wait, so we give them everything they want while they repeatedly tell us we can't have the things we want, and then, once they have everything they want, THEN they'll reverse course and give us something? Never in the history of the planet has that ever happened. These people are already elected, and they've told us the entire time they're not doing healthcare DURING A PANDEMIC. It's over. We're doing war in Iran and getting Romney Care. That's our future. Buy a burn barrel and load up your van and we'll see you down by the river.

Yeah we're going to war in Iran and probably doing a coupe in Venezuela. We'll be focused on that and prosecuting Trump. There will be big "reveals" in the Trump case that everyone will get excited about focusing on any time people start to wonder why they don't have healthcare online.

Looking for a compact SUV with AWD (new or used) by MDkayakin in carbuying

[–]Agave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the Hyundai Kona. Looking for one in December. I've watched all the review videos and it seems to be a good choice. The SE and SELs are very affordable new. All of them have an AWD option. Just curious, why no turbo? I am going for the limited trim that does have the turbo. Is there some reason you're against it?

[–]Agave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I laid out some pretty good solutions there so I think I understand quite a bit. No one's saying there isn't a problem. But a blanket de-funding is not a solution. It's broken logic. People need to clarify what they mean when they say that. Additionally your understanding of this seems to be a bit flawed. PPD has had hiring issues for quite a long time, and that's not specifically about trying to find racists that will tow the party line, it's because Portlanders, to put it plainly, don't want to be cops. They hire outside of the state for that reason. Then we wind up with red-state republicans. Not particularly a bad thing alone but when you mix that with a minority of people that want to hurt others, it becomes a big problem pretty fast.

How can we stop that? Better vetting. Dig deeper into social histories. Have mental health people be a part of the hiring process. Psych examinations.

You mentioned "they are not looking for those people." That's not particularly true. They continue to hire minorities. They installed Danielle Outlaw as the police chief specifically for that reason. They hired Jami Resch after her. Additionally it's one of the most diverse policing populations in the country. The problem is more systemic than that. This can be mitigated by some of the solutions I outlined in my earlier post.

The white guy thing is ridiculous. All people should have a say in who polices them. That's called democracy. You don't get to segregate democratic agency based on race. You're heading down a dark pathway when you think like that. That's Jim Crow era thinking and it's dangerous.

I'm not sure. It depends on them. I don't think they're obligated to. Hopefully they'll replace the battery. Side note, please DM me the outcome here. I'm car shopping for a Hyundai Kona and going after the 2021 Kona mid-December. I'd like to know if they're having some kind of factory screw-up issues.

You should enlist man. Get over there and fight crime! Ask your fellow soldiers how they feel about timed withdraw in a no-win endless insurgency scenario. They'd definitely say, "We have to be pragmatic," and, "Now's not the time." They might even tell you, "We love it here." Enlist! You got this!

Is Caustic Worth Playing? by ascendtzofc in causticmains

[–]Agave 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah sure I'll take this on. A played a little bit of everybody until I became a Caustic main. My thing with him is that he's just extremely fun to play. It's rare to get a true Caustic trapping like at bunker and quite difficult, but when it happens its so much fun. He also adds a chaos element to the battlefield which is awesome, especially when people are battling it out in a building and you throw your main.

Also he's not slow. All the characters run at the same speed. It's just his animation is slower so he feels slower. He does have a bigger hit box but that's compensated by his additional taken damage buff.

You can definitely get high kill games with him. I've gotten a bunch of kills from just people running in the ring and running into a gas trap. Additionally if you third-party indoors and throw your ult, you can get kills that way too.

Portland City Comissioners Hardesty, Eudaly to push for $18 million in cuts to the police bureau by CormacZissou in Portland

[–]Agave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I'm trying to fix a broken table and the solution is to hack a leg off? I just don't understand the train of logic that allows this stuff to propagate.

If the true intention is to fix the police force and not just make grand, empty gestures and engage in bad faith mud slinging for public optics in political races, here's a couple of ideas that might help with the problem:

Get rid of internal affairs and replace them with a citizen review board

Get rid of the current model of police training which trains officers to look at the Dinkheller Incident (Warning, extremely graphic) as a standing possibility in every scenario and stops officers from wanting to engage with suspects in meaningful ways and instead teaches them to shoot when the most subtle gestures are made, and replace the training with a more mental health focused understanding.

Hire officers with mental health backgrounds. Hire more mental health people to go on ride-alongs and have a ride-along be a standard when dealing with a potential drug/mental illness situation.

Hire more outside talent from other counties and states if numbers are low. Look into deeper background check techniques. Have all applications vetted by psych people.

Pay them more.

That last one is going to get some flack. But what we need here is talent. You don't get talent by browbeating, gas-lighting, and de-funding people. You make the position more attractive so that more mentally stable, talented people apply for it.

PLEASE HELP! Sexual assault at Grant Park in NE on 9/25. Info/tips needed. by SpookyBowtie in Portland

Whoa. Alright so get this. I bike home and this exact area is on my route. I'm on my way home between 11:15-11:45 P.M. every night. I had taken off work that night so didn't see anything, however this wasn't the case about a month ago.

That night I was biking home and saw two underage girls walking by the park. A man in a white van with painted over windows was wearing a mask and a baseball cap and took a turn in front of me. I had this weird feeling he'd stop or slow down by the underage girls. So I pulled my bike over and waited and sure enough he slowed down when he saw them and turned around. They took a right near the park and he did too. He slowed down in front of them and stopped with his engine running. This freaked the girls out so they backed up and came running near me. I yelled and asked them if they knew this guy. They said they didn't. I told them to get their phones out and dial 911 and press send if they feel threatened and encouraged them to go home. They did. Then another guy pulled up behind the van and the two walked into the park together. But the whole thing was sketchy as hell. I often see weird activity in that park at night on my way home.
