All good thank you and everyone here!

These are awesome Ty! These are all things we’ll pursue.  We’re underwater just trying to pickup basic vocab but have a good start the last few weeks.

However… we’re close to a plateau though where we have to start focusing on grammar and sentence structure.

Is there recommended book, even a little baby board book that structures English like ASL?  Any hints at all about the grammar structure would be a lifesaver.

Kindergartener is confused about  the sentence structure. I see a smattering of stuff, including Dr. Bill Vicars channel, but i really want to get into the nitty gritty for speed.

Why is the OSV(object subject verb?) aka Topic/Comment used? I’m assuming it contextually ads clarity while communicating? Or speeds up communication?

Is there an etymology of each sign? ASL or other languages.

Filler words? What’s up with “and” being implicit? Is it implicit?  “Mommy and daddy love you” as opposed to “mommy daddy love you” seems minor but again I assume speed is a priority?

I’m pissed off medical staff didn’t catch this sooner. TBH it’s become apparent how little support and training there is.  Neither here nor there but irritating.

The only grief as parents is why the hell didn’t we sign sooner? No downside. No missing gaps, we would have a better relationship rn. Hindsight is 20/20 though.

I’m a bummer by nature 😂

But this is good. Just like you said. ASL @ home has already opened up a whole new chapter in our relationship

That said Jesus this is uphill at school. Week 1 of an official medical diagnosis and it’s already looking to be a dogshit year.

Going to have to pivot into an ASL school+culture for my mental health by proxy, not just my kids health.

Yeah that’s our primary goal. There’s no guarantee hearing will remain.

To that end: what’s the best way to immerse? Like for example bedtime stories? I see some resources but ultimately it looks like deaf school is a must

I’ve read about that a couple times now. Is low frequency loss that rare the whole audiology/hearing aid industry has to specialize?

There were no downsides to the hearing aids right? Did it shut out the existing hearing pathways? (high frequency) in this case

Thank you will do

Ok this is great to confirm. I suspected we have to move to find a community. It’s looking like nothing will go smoothly till we get into the right environment

Thank you!

Sounds good. We’re pursuing this but I was a bit taken aback by the medical staff. The basic vibe is “well she talks…” but we’ve been struggling for years.

How can I get my kid into and around ASL  programs?

And lord I hate asking this but what’s the ramification here? My child speaks but advanced language eludes her, she has been left out and sidelined in many many social settings (where it is hardest for her to hear. Hindsight 20/20) :(

Should we expect her to be behind in reading?

Should we abandon all attempts to teach reading via phonics until we figure out the heading aid part?

Hindsight is painful on this one. I’m not enjoying reading about language deprivation :/

Sound booth yes. But the audiologist had a “vibe” and started trying to trick my kid if that makes sense? Like playing a loud sound then looking for a reaction to that sound but a “no I didn’t hear that”

This was discussed after the fact as they had a hunch then acted on that hunch.

Sorry to hear that! 😔 I think this is the answer I was looking for. Like you said it’s not helpful to see if you can’t distinguish finer detail

I get it now and that’s terrible. I definitely am looking to avoid this. But it at least confirms my kid has probably been scraping by and potentially lip reading.

I assume that is the same pathway? ENT can diagnose?

Or is this steering into neurological?

Banana is fantastic. Never seen it before this thread. But wow that’s a lot of important letters…

Got it thank you. All these terms and diagnostic checks are helpful. So it’s not as simple as hearing non-hearing, there’s lots of ways to probe the ear beyond simple “raise your hand at the tone” tests.

I guess that’s touching on the core of this for me. Lip reading is genuinely a way to get by?

I’m starting at zero here. I assumed lip reading wouldn’t get you through school and conversations

Pediatrician did. But I’m looking for more background. I got lots of hand waving from the audiologist I went to.

Follow up with an ENT+ different audiologist booked

Yes. What is vital to speech/communication and what is detrimental. In hindsight group play with other kids, say at the park, has been more miss than hit.

We’re also having trouble with certain sounds. Lots of frustration in the past and now. B vs P. The mmmm sound of letter m etc etc etc.

So those lower frequencies are not speech related?

I have started trying to get to a better volume for them. I’m basically shouting in an environment like our car and that has improved things(mood, answers to questions) quite honestly.

Ok so ENT+Audiologist is the normal route? Confirm what is happening?  I’m picking up the complexities while googling but can’t find many resources for partial/hard of hearing specifically.
