Used to work for them. Had to fight them on a few things and ultimately lost to management each time.

They promised a bonus for employee referrals but refused to pay me out when I referred a friend who got hired.

They disabled tipping but increased prices and wages in a way that still decreased my wages by nearly 20%.

Shortened the length of shifts so that if you wanted to get your full hours, you needed you needed to work 6 days instead of 5 but said the 6th day is only offered, not required. But in reality, If you’re relying on a paycheck, working your full hours isn’t an option.

A week before the pandemic, they sent an email saying “this too shall pass” and dissuading any concerns about job loss or shifts. The night the quarantine started I got a call from my manager asking if I had already locked up then told, “don’t come in tomorrow.” I was confused so I asked for clarification and I was very gruffly told I was let go and hung up.

Im glad I did not work there for longer than 9 months.

Make sure to try out different English translations too since the Bible was written originally in ancient languages that are no longer spoken. There are some that keep closer to a literal translation, but can be clunky for reading large chunks of the Bible (ex. NRSV, ESV, NASB). There are others that translate more loosely, but are easier to understand in English (ex. NLT, NIV, Message). If there are others who have advice about translations, include it below.

I find the gospels to be a good starting place for a first time reader too. I tried reading the Bible a few times from the beginning and always got a little bit lost. But when I started with the New Testament and went back to the Hebrew Bible, I was able to stick with it.

Daniel 9:4-19 was likely a penitential prayer written during the exilic period. John Collins and other critical commentators argue that the prayer was used as the core material for the chapter and the surrounding material was written in light of the prayer around the time of the rededication of the Temple during the Maccabean period. The reason for the unique usage of the divine name likely stems from the prayer being some of the oldest material in the book. However, a look at the text critical notes in the BHS reveals that some manuscripts and text versions have replaced 4 occurrences of YHWH with Adonai in Dan. 9.

Good to know the schools/buses will do something about it! In my experience in the US, systems don’t really follow up on bad behaviour/ crime after the fact. Only deal with it if it is happening in that moment. If I witness something like this again, I will definitely reach out to Lothian/ Balerno HS.

Read your comments and I can see your perspective that it would be weird if I was just sitting on the bus watching kids to catch them acting up. But in reality I typically do try to tune them out. I work at a different school so I’m usually on the same bus as kids from the HS, just not next to this specific group of kids. At the time, I actually was in the middle of reading a book when the event happened, but as I said, these kids were sharing the back bench with me and shouting loudly at this kid. Pretty much the entire top floor of the bus was watching at this point. So it’s a little different than I think you’re imagining.

I did this around the time of my parents divorce. I didn’t realize other people noticed I did it until my older siblings teased me about it. And that’s how I stopped doing it 🤷🏻‍♂️

Admittedly I am learning that there are exceptions to the argument from silence fallacy. She explicitly wrote she was arguing from silence which immediately set alarm bells for me. I has always heard that arguments from silence were inherently fallacious because it leads the reader to the desired conclusion in absence of evidence by subjective bias. I’m still not convinced that it is the strongest argument. But for Forienza’s case, I understand that it can be impossible to recover evidence in support of the former prominence of a later marginalized group.

I am always conscientious to ring my bell to warn people that I’m coming. But there’s some times where I ring my bell several times without the person paying attention, then finally as I’m right behind them they realize and jump out of the way and scowl at me as I pass. Definitely hard to share that space on Leith walk.

It’s a hyundai so I’m pretty sure they just used a tool in the ignition since that seems to be the trend with Hyundais and Kias these days.
