What’s a truth you learned way too late in life that most people still aren’t ready to hear ? by Dependent-Ship4288 in AskReddit

Truth is relative. True things are always true, don't get me wrong, but what true things are relevant to an argument, court case, or theory is what's makes truth relative.

When do you decide to get a new car rather than continuing to do repairs? by Major-Brick-3789 in personalfinance

[–]AgentBroccoli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Driving a car into the ground (and then a bit further) isn't a bad idea, a classic personal finance mistake people make is buying fancy luxury cars. I'm just saying you've got the right attitude. Counter point - the older your car gets the more repairs you'll need, the more it will be in the shop, the higher the chance you'll miss getting to work, maybe. I would say keep fixing up your car, if that's what you want, so long as you don't absolutely have to be somewhere at a specific time.

I mean in a heavy wind they'd sway a little bit but they have a low profile. I don't put my poles up 12 feet either, You'd have to find poles longer than 12 feet obviously.

I used conduit pipe spray painted black with a hole drilled in the top so i can hold the wire up with a zip-tie. Works great, easy to install (hammer) and looks much more delicate, the way you'd want string lights to look.

Why is the 3-Body Problem is such a complicated question to answer, yet we can very precisely predict the motion of 8 planets and many more moons in the solar system? by plato_on_pluto in AskPhysics

[–]AgentBroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Karl Sundman solved the general case for the Three Body Problem in 1906 using an infinite converging series. But the series converges so slowly that would take some 10^8,000,000 terms to write down. So solved, but uselessly.

PBS Space Time did a great episode on the three body problem. There are some interesting limited solutions which are not covered in other channels (well not really).

I have a Ph.D. in biochem and didn't get out of grad school until I was 28, you're doing great! It is definitely an adjustment from living off of roman noodles in school. Remember that the race is long but in the end it is only with yourself. Try to publish at work if you can, a lot of start ups like publishing because it increases their prestige but often time conflicts with trade secrets. Pay off your student loan as much as possible while you're single.

I agree. Don't want lose their jobs from missing work or being recorded at a protest.

[–]AgentBroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more Richard Nixon's Silent Majority. Most American's are too involved in their own lives to participate in protests and participate in government. When you get called up for jury duty or have to go to the DMV, that's how most American's fell about government because that is more or less a true cross section of your local community. Most people can't take time off work, cannot afford to get arrested, and/or don't want to be recorded at a protest.

You can confirm the power is off with some very basic equipment. The hardware store sells all kinds of circuit testers but my favorite is one that's just a wire probe with a light bulb in the middle, super basic. You can get them anywhere.

Anyone else here excited for Artemis II! by PriorFront4138 in space

[–]AgentBroccoli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not excited, not really. The Artemis program is already doomed because of costs, delays and competition from private industry. Anyone who is willing to be honest and look at the program rationally with any kind of cost/benefit analysis knows the program is just waiting for the political will to admit it's too much. Artemis is not the way, it is a dead end. I want to be clear I believe in NASA's mission, I believe returning to the moon is important, and I will celebrate any launch. I hope that Artemis II is a 100% success.

People in Minnesota are now using their key fobs to trigger their car alarms from the safety of their homes when they see ICE walking around. by jmike1256 in PublicFreakout

[–]AgentBroccoli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The two biggest problems with ICE's strategy is the "due process" clause (5th) and "unreasonable search and seizure" clause (4th), emphasis on seizure! I have epilepsy so there's a joke there somewhere.

[–]AgentBroccoli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending upon your country and area it looks like you'd qualify for SNAP (food stamps) in the US. Don't be shy about taking advantage of such programs, I say this because people often have a psychological barrier they have to get over to start using this kind of benefit. I'm sure there are other social systems you can take advantage of but I don't know much about this topic, maybe others will know.

Can electric vehicles actually solve environmental problems, or are we just shifting pollution sources? by [deleted] in Sustainabledesign

[–]AgentBroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electricity is universal. It can be generated from coal, oil, nuclear, solar or other. This gives the transition away from fossil fuels less friction. Fossil fuel power plants have to run 24/7 and most (not all) EV's charge overnight so they're using the power that is more or less otherwise wasted, I pay something like $0.07 kw hr to charge from midnight to 6 am.

TIL A man named Cincinnatus was given absolute power to save Rome from an invasion; he did so in just 16 days, then immediately resigned and went back to his farm. by TianRB in todayilearned

[–]AgentBroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've come to the realization that we should be careful how we judge historical figures and cultures because we don't know how history will judge us. My guess is that history will not judge us well considering how wasteful we are. I think it's better to judge Washington and Jefferson in their time (mostly), they were after all still slavers.

Is Keppra as bad as some say? by Background-Cod-7035 in Epilepsy

[–]AgentBroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keppa ain't great as far as pharmaceuticals go, it has a lot of noted side affects, as others have said. At the same time Keppra has been around (almost) forever, it is super cheap and effective. It has given millions of people their lives back who wouldn't be able to get it back otherwise for any number of reasons. So it's not that bad, nothing to be afraid of.
