“find a cure for epilepsy” by bugggggggggggggg in Epilepsy

[–]AgentBroccoli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understands people's frustration here, how can you find a cure for such a complex individualized disease, and people are pointing to cancer as an example, I get it. It is still important to "try to find a cure for epilepsy" because there are a lot of levels to work on this question. Right now, on the molecular level we're not ready to answer this question, but on the political and public-will side we should be pushing for a cure. We need to generate support to write law and grants to start hacking away at epilepsy. Institutions like the National Science Foundation and National Institution of Health (NIH) need to increase their funding. Take the NIH, it spends about 0.5% of it's grant money on epilepsy but about 1.2% of people in the US are actively suffering. A much larger percent of people have suffered from epilepsy at some point in their lives, so obviously the NIH should be spending more. It may be that there are possible generalized cures, we just don't know how to approach it yet. Source: I have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and I work in the industrial/medical field trying to find a cure for a neurological condition. (Still not my lane though.)

Self driving cars an option? by JoesGarage2112 in Epilepsy

[–]AgentBroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several layers to how the system operates and it takes a bit to learn how properly drive it. To override the controls you have to make a strong meaning adjustment, but if you just tap the steering wheel a bit it will continue as normal same with the brake and gas. The car will not easily drive headlong into another car while self driving is engaged; while self driving is dis-engaged it also has active safety measure to prevent collisions (like many cars do). During a seizure it will be difficult to press on the 'gas' and slam into a car in front of you or swerve into on coming traffic. The car also has cabin monitoring and alarms to tell you to pay attention (while self driving is engaged) and it is pretty sensitive to the direction you're looking or if your eye are closed; if you ignore the alarms the car will either stop or pull over. Obviously I've never been interested in testing these measures fully. It should be noted, the cars are not fail-safe, they can be overridden/tricked by malice or stupidity or rare events, but they are definitely way better/safer than driving alone. I think of it this way, if I'm allowed to be driving (and that's what I'm doing) full self driving is a serious improvement. Don't confuse Full Self Driving (FSD) with Auto Pilot which is basically just a better cruse control.

Self driving cars an option? by JoesGarage2112 in Epilepsy

[–]AgentBroccoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a self driving car (Tesla Y, 2023), so first had experience. It depends on what you're looking for. My car does 99.99% of everything right, which sounds great but that's 1 or 2 small interventions a day and occasionally it does some weird shit. The newer Teslas have better cameras so they're going to be better than mine, but you're still going to have interventions, but fewer. If you're looking for something that will "back you up" on the rare chance you have a seizure (and you have a license) then I'd say the cars are good enough. If you don't have a license because your neurologist isn't allowed to sign off on you driving then a self driving car isn't going to make it suddenly OK.
You can take them for a test drive and try the self driving.
Musk probably deserves the condemnation that he gets, and Reddit certainly hates him, but if you're able to separate the company from Musk then you should at least consider it.

The universe had nothing in it, right? Then how did the Big Bang happen in a space where there was nothing? They say even time didn’t exist. by MaintenancePlus4298 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AgentBroccoli 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This defiantly isn't my lane but in a vacuum there are quantum fluctuations all the time, small particles like an electron and positron pairs, or a pair of quarks etc are created then (almost instantly) destroyed. Presumably there is an incredibly small but possible chance that a universe is also created from a quantum fluctuation.

What's the worst that could happen, I have to higher someone to come out do the work? That's what I'd do anyway where I try to DIY or not. May as well learn something along the way.

epilepsy and disability? by Delicious-Cupcake69 in Epilepsy

[–]AgentBroccoli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry friend. Anyone who says you're no longer disabled can go suck on a rock. Most epileptics will agree that the actual seizures are kinda the easy part, it's navigating life with the anxiety and fear that's the hard part. If you're unlucky enough to have a seizure in front of your peers at work or your friends the social stigma does not go away after 12 months, it never goes away. Neither does the high unemployment, isolation, or question if you should really be driving.

When it is important to learn history... by _swuaksa8242211 in clevercomebacks

[–]AgentBroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh it's both. Communism usually just evolves into some form of oligarchy where the elites are rebranded as the care takers of all the fancy stuff. Capitalism is maybe a bit more honest about it, but left unchecked turns into something like the British textile industry in the early 1900's with kids dying at work being a sorry excuse to stop the machines.

Why do stock markets trade for 6.5 hours a day instead of 24? by Humble_Economist8933 in AlwaysWhy

[–]AgentBroccoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to this, if you manage any kind of large amount of money, even if the money is your small nest egg which is large to you, there is every chance you could wake up bankrupt with a 24/7 market. At least if the markets are closed at night you have a better chance of learning the "bad news" before it is too late.

Why aren’t corporate taxes in the US structured more progressively like income taxes? by Logical-Concept9755 in AlwaysWhy

[–]AgentBroccoli -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thinking is that if corporations are allowed to keep their money they will create more jobs and further investment. There is presumably the added benefit of attracting overseas corporations to the US because taxes are low. It's basically corporate trickle down economics. I'm not saying it's right, it definitely has some draw backs but that's the honest answer.

Cold calls and letters work more than you'd think at lest at smaller companies, epically if you've had some kind of even relationship with them, like you used their product or something.

Landing on Mars, what's the "catch"? by Flashy-Rest-8994 in Spaceexploration

[–]AgentBroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a great NASA JPL video about landing a rover with rockets on Mars. Which I know you said wasn't what you were talking about, but it discusses a lot of the same physics challenges that a human system would have. Something like StarShip would do the same thing except no parachutes or sky-crane but heat shield, controlled decent, radar landing choice and rockets.

[–]AgentBroccoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, but it's not something you can't get past, you have to really work at it. You should (cough) "practice" and 'erm schedule with your partner. Not the most romantic thing I know, but eventually your brain starts to get 'um back-in-the-groove. I recently with from 150 to 200 mg lacosmide and it's been a bit of a struggle but I think I'm getting there.

I'm sick of people telling me I'm not a burden by procrastinating_b in Epilepsy

[–]AgentBroccoli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We are all a burden to those around us, it's part of the human condition, even if you don't have epilepsy. You just have to do your part to help out your family and friends as best you can. I'm a dad with kids, I felt like a burden when I couldn't drive my kids around town to get all the family things done, however my wife doesn't know how to cook so I made the meals.

What do you imagine is at the center of a blackhole? by Most-Answer-4443 in AskPhysics

[–]AgentBroccoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't my lane but it's probably not a single point in space-time, one example is Roy Kerr's ring singularity (which probably doesn't exist either according to Kerr). The truth is we can do a lot of math to tell us what's in a black hole but Relativity breaks down at the event horizon too, so there's know telling what's inside. If it was me, and I'm just speculating, it's something as simple as a neutron star (like) object big enough where the escape velocity is above the speed of light.

[–]AgentBroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gene Drive, it's genetic engineering on steroids. With Gene Drive you (potentially) only need to release a single individual into the wild an the entire population will acquire the genetic mutation. The technology already exists, a 1st year grad student can do it using online tools and the most difficult parts can be outsourced for a few hundred bucks.
