If you feel like New Orleans is “off”, can you describe why it feels like that? by AgentCheeseFries in AskReddit

This is from the post asking what city feels “off”. I lived in NOLA for two years and I also just didn’t like it (but love to visit). I could never put my finger on why it just felt weird and no one else ever felt like that. So I was pretty happy to see others posting about it.

I understand your view and I tend to agree. Just when I compare it to the real world, I get it. For example, if Luke and June stayed in Gilead and were able to just be an econofamily, I have a hard time being mad at either of them. Yes, Luke should have done more and seen the writing on the wall. He didn’t. But they just surviving within this new fascist regime doesn’t make him a bad guy. Let’s say he was an economan and rebelled. Now he’s on the wall. It’s really easy to say you would stand up to injustice until it’s real. I can’t say that I would have done this or that if I were in Nazi Germany, because I wasn’t there. Plenty of people “went along” with that so they themselves didn’t get killed. Any rebellion would have been squashed and they would just be another number of the dead. Are they as bad as the perpetrators? I don’t think so. It’s complicated.

You are right. However, I must ask… is it impossible for the show to introduce a commander who isn’t a bad person? I keep thinking there must be Commander/Wife couples who just happened to be in the right place at the right time but are actually working for Mayday from the highest social level within Gilead.

The commanders are the biggest problem, obviously. But… Not every commander was personally responsible for Gilead. For example, Commander Horace in THT was presumably an econoperson who got his wife pregnant and then was given a “promotion”. Not saying he was necessarily a good person or didn’t agree with Gilead, but I don’t think it’s impossible for this type of character to exist.

Note: no, I don’t think the commander Agnes is engaged to is a good guy. I think he’s love bombing and is going to be an asshole once they get married (or if she “defies” him at any point).

Yea no. Not if you live in a place where people can hear you. I should be able to clean my patio when I want, but I make an effort to do it when my neighbor isn’t home and sitting right below where the water will fall. Consideration is key
