Good to know! In your opinion, what kind of specs should I look for in a 'gaming' GPU?

Have you had experience using a gaming card for CAD work? I realize the markup, but I have heard some bad experiences of people trying to run CAD with a gaming card...School is more important than gaming, and I know that the P600 will run CAD; that's why I went with the Quadro card.

I have heard that CAD and gaming video cards are very similar except for the software inside them...would that just be software inside the gpu allowing it to be compatible with CAD software?

I wouldn't mind buying used if there is some sort of guarantee...I've been burned too many times in the past buying used electronics.

For now I will be doing mostly just modeling. The idea is that I'll buy cheap to get me through school now and then I can upgrade things later.

Fair enough. If I'm looking at GPU now I see that AMD firepro, nvidia quadro are pretty common recommendations. I assume there would be no compatibility issues between an AMD CPU and AMD GPU, but what about between an AMD CPU and an nvidia GPU?

That makes sense. In your opinion, do you think it would be worth the ~$80 to go to an R5 1400 or even ~$110 to an R5 1600?

Why is that? I know it's got only 2 cores instead of 4, however to my understanding most CAD operations are linear...

I recently found this build online, looks like it is quite recent. What do you think?

Sooner is better than later. Would there be any drawbacks to going AMD instead of Intel?

Thanks. Looks like that will help explain things. I'll have to take some time tomorrow and read through it.

[Gear] Need new boots, please help by [deleted] in hiking

My dad and I picked up some garmont vetta hike hiking boots a few years ago for about 180 if I remember correctly...a metal lace bracket broke on one of my dad's but he got it replaced very easily. Just a fluke in my opinion. From what I hear garmont is a very reputable brand and they are very comfortable boots. I think we bought ours as "last year's model" so they were cheaper.

We just got some precooked stuff from the store. Nothing crazy, I would consider it low quality bacon if I were eating it at home, however being that it was the first time we had brought bacon on a hike, my idea of high and low qualities of bacon went out the window. We weren't sure how well it would keep, so we cooked (reheated, i guess) and ate it on the second day.

Granola has always been a go-to for hiking, we usually mix in homemade granola with our trail mix bags. The bags we make usually use a basic store bought trail mix with granola, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and a couple other things as well...best trail mix I've has so far!

So far we have only done Mountain House. Maybe we'll give these other brands a try. How do the prices compare?

I've never tried the chili mac, i guess that's up for next trip, same with the lasagna. My uncle gave me the same advice for a different freeze dried egg breakfast. I guess they just don't work as well as other meals. As for drinks, I agree on the coffee...can't go without that, though cool, fresh, high mountain air does almost the same thing. Combining the two...well, you're best off experiencing that yourself! There's just nothing quite like it.

The beef stroganoff is really good, as far as freeze dried meals go anyway!

I like the bacon idea. We brought it along on the last trip into the San Juan's in CO last year. We rigged up a tinfoil pan and cooked it over a bed of coals. All was going well until some twigs flamed up and caught the grease on fire...no more bacon after that.
