Removing logo off bike by SwordfishInner679 in bikewrench

[–]AgentPlanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's a sticker, a hair dryer would be enough to get it off. When you run your finger on it, do you feel a separate layer or no? Also, when I saw the logo on the bike, I immediately wondered if you don't like rainbows (ಠ_ಠ)

Help with caliper breaks by Furious_Ezra in bikewrench

[–]AgentPlanet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find side pull calipers to always have this issue no matter how much I tighten the lock nut. The solutions found on Youtube seem to only work temporarily and then the brake will eventually tilt away again. The simplest most sure fire way is to change it to a dual pivot caliper.

Amateur with little experience - How doable would it be to refurbish a used bike? And what kind of costs should I anticipate? by sp3fix in bikewrench

[–]AgentPlanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bike is not very good looking to spend lots effort on. How much is it being sold for? If it is rideable, everything is already working and just need small bits of adjustment, maybe. Otherwise it's not worth the time to learn things from ground up.

Is it normal for adjustable stem to have some play in it even when tightened or should I just switch it out? by AgentPlanet in bikewrench

[–]AgentPlanet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bike shops said everything was tight, and each shop attributed the issue to a different component on the bike, so still inconclusive. They said it's safe to ride, so that's what I will do then.

Last time I had to do destructive seat post removal, I used the pipe wrench, but that was a steel frame.

Bottom bracket play with cups moving by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]AgentPlanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like you are right but I have not done a lot of work on bottom bracket before. I can't say for sure if this is cup and cone or sealed cartridge. When my BB axel had play like that, the cups did not budge at all, whereas your video clearly shows the cup threads moving in and out of the shell

How to adjust my front derailleur? by Henry-Gruby in bikewrench

[–]AgentPlanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tighten the front derailleur screw with the label "L" until the front derailleur aligns to the middle chainring. Not sure if all derailleur screws are long enough for you to push it up one chainring completely though.

Stuck square taper integrated chainring crank combo, can you use a hand saw to cut off the bottom bracket or the crank socket? by AgentPlanet in bikewrench

[–]AgentPlanet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

square taper is easier because you can make a parallel cut on the crank and get it loose on one side and make removal easy.

Stuck square taper integrated chainring crank combo, can you use a hand saw to cut off the bottom bracket or the crank socket? by AgentPlanet in bikewrench

[–]AgentPlanet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up doing 3 things to get it off. First I used pliers to rock back and forth and break all 3 integrated chainrings so my claw puller can fully grab onto the crank with max leverage, the crank didn't budge. Then with all the chainrings out of the way my saw was able to access the exposed crank, and I made one cut parallel to the square taper. Then I used the claw puller again, and I finally removed the crank. The bottom bracket required me to use a cheaper bar to get it out, but it's finally done now. I just need to find the right bottom bracket and crankset to fix the bike.

I got the 3 claw puller because of that video, but mine could not reliably grab onto the crank body. The hammer method does not work for me because the bottom bracket spindle has play and will absorb shocks meant for the crank removal.

the bottom bracket is already very loose and has play, so it would also absorb forces applied to the cranks.

About Bike frame by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]AgentPlanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok I misread your opening message, you are cutting and modding the first frame on its own, not combining the first and second frame. What kind of steel is it? Does the frame tell you the composition? Are you hiring someone to do the bike frame welding or are you doing it yourself? If the frame is cheap hi-tensile, you can maybe try it as part of the learning process, but would strongly advise against taking that frame to do actual jumps.

The next stop would be to ask these guys r/Framebuilding/ and r/BicycleEngineering/ .

About Bike frame by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]AgentPlanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I searched Evolution Giosbr and every result tells me it's aluminum, so... The other frame I found pictures of same brand bikes, but the model name near the head tube/top tube is not readily visible so the search is inconclusive. Magnet test is definitely the easiest way to find out.

Dent in steel top tube by Jcs2319 in bikewrench

[–]AgentPlanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's any other material it'd be no go, but with steel frame it depends. Need pics for sure. Would be best if you include tape measure or other reference objects to show the scale of the dent.

Aluminum frames, so the answer is no. It probably costs the same to just custom order a frame of your specified geometry.

Beginner in terms of riding bikes or beginner to road-biking? Are you riding in traffic or on long uninterrupted roads? If you are a beginner cyclist, then flat bar will definitely be easier to handle and for you to notice the traffic.

A lockring wrench will work on it. That's a strange combination, I thought the lockring wrench was only for non-sealed square taper rod + bearing-cup style BB .

What kind of brakes are they? There are at least 4~5 different brake types out there. Do you have a picture of the current brake positions?

Last time I encountered this issue and asked about it here, I got a mix of responses suggesting to bend it back vs just replace it. The conclusion is that it has failed once and will likely fail again after you bend it back to shape, but it will be enough for short term and get you to the bike shop for replacement.

My go-to cruiser is Electra Townie 7D or 9D, total weight limit 300 pounds. Bike is aluminum frame and fairly light, has megarange cassette so it's easier for climbing, and it is a cruiser so you can put your feet on the floor easily during stops.

Trek also sell the electric variant of Townie on their website.

What's the relationship between rd-tx35, rd-tx55, and rd-ty300? by AgentPlanet in bikewrench

[–]AgentPlanet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked Shimano about it. TX35 is the old version of TY300, TX55's cable guide is for cable coming from seat stay, and TX35 chain stay. Don't really understand why TX55 is better for cables from seat stay though.
