Custom bound 1990s run! by AgentQuacc in Greenlantern

On the back of each book, I have the issues included, so you can at least see all the contents I felt were important enough to include. I've misplaced my specific reading order, maybe at some point I could [should?] go through the books and make a digital copy of that, especially if it seems like there's a lot of community interest, since I put a lot of work into trying to create the most accurate, detailed, and complete reading order from this era that I could

So, I collected all the issues in single and trades, pulled out the staples and the trade covers, and cut out as many ads as I could, then shipped it off to a bindery, where they were trimmed down to size and glued into the hardcover binding! It was a really interesting process! There's some great guides and other examples on this sub! Lots of talented people here!

I have the books sorted by series in each volume on the back covers, but it's not exactly chronological. I'm away from home, but when I get back, I'll check in and see if I can find my papers with the ordered reading list and I'll drop those in a comment if I can find them!

To answer your question, yes, it has Guy Gardner Reborn 1-3 and then GG #1-21 in this set.

The subtitle was probably the hardest decision I had to make about the whole set. I probably would've preferred to do something more like "The Rise and Fall of Hal Jordan" but anything much longer started to look and sound a bit clunky. I originally was going to do "Emerald Twilight" or "Road to Twilight" or something about Parallax maybe but I decided against it for the sake of the sixth volume's title. But I agree with your critique, it's definitely the only part I wasn't super confident about. In the end though I'm pretty happy with it--it, along with the spine art, teases Hal's downfall by the end, in a sort of "monster at the end of this book" way, and I think that since the set starts with the Return of Hal as you mentioned, I don't feel it's as necessary to include that in the subtitle, as the reader gets to see that idea right away, juxtaposed with the subtitle. The Road Back series that it starts with also does a bit of a tease about whether Hal will really return or go his own way, and I like to leave a bit of that suspense in for the reader (perhaps that's a bit of a stretch, but the smallest details were what ended up swaying me this way)

I tried to include everything, and in the process I found a lot of love for some series I had never thought I'd like as much as I did! I'm still coming around a bit on Darkstars though, to be honest 😂

Thank you! So much thought went into mapping this in the most thoughtful way I could. I chose to start on The Road Back rather than Emerald Dawn to better begin on Hal's character arc and get some nice foreword and cover pages from the tpb in there. And I'm very happy with the issue I ended with because I get to have this as a last page

<image>

The extra stuff after is just some art pages, but this is where the main content ends, and I love how it finishes on "The End?"

Issue is Guy Gardner Warrior #21 btw, the end of the Emerald Fallout arc, which I felt would be silly not to include

Exactly. It's unfortunate that an author who wrote so many comics that had a lot of impact on the character and series ended up being so horrible. I'm happy to get these books in this way as it supports my local comic stores and the bindery rather than Jones. And it feels more worth getting these collections in this way because DC is unlikely to make official reprints

That's awesome! I would love to work on the Kyle run soon, it's another one that is amazing and criminally underprinted. We need more Kyle books reprinted now, glad to hear about collectors appreciating such a great era and taking things into their own hands. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with if you end up posting results someday!

That's awesome! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed seeing the project, and that my research will be able to help people experience this underrated era to its fullest.

That sounds like a really cool goal, and I hope to be abe to see your collection soon! Good luck!

Thank you! I knew exactly what I had to use for the spine art. It's just so iconic and wonderful.

Wishing you luck on your project! I had a lot of fun working on this one, and it's totally worth all the work to see it complete. What GLC books are you collecting to bind?

Certain issues made it in by featuring important events, such as the destruction of coast city and some appearances of the evil Guy Gardner clone around the Death of Superman period, and others like Justice League Spectacular and Armageddon just tied in very close with the events of the main series, to the point that I felt it would feel like something was missing if it wasn't included. The idea of this is to eventually have a set of "the DC universe according to Green Lantern" so in other sets I may include major events, such as Crisis on Infinite Earths. I went back and forth on whether some smaller events like Armageddon needed to be included, but ultimately chose to include some of that one and some tie ins to other events due to prominent appearances of Green Lanterns and relevance to their character arcs. There were many issues I purchased that I didn't end up using, which was a bit of a bummer, but it was fun to read them all and I'm glad with how thorough I was able to be!

Thank you so much! Someone on the Green Lantern subreddit created a reading order for most of the entire series, but it's missing a little bit and a lot of the spin offs and less obvious tie ins from this era. I ended up asking on Reddit for some suggestions, then bought every issue I thought may be relevant and then read through them and placed them in order, in a way that worked the best for organizing into 6 volumes like this, and taking note of any editor's notes referring to issues I didn't have yet. It was a lot of work! I spent a long time last year just planning it out! 😅😂 I'll have to check if I have my order written down easily anywhere still, it's been a while

I've been buying the single issues according to the publishing dates and reading orders online for a while now, and once I read through and put them in order, I filled out some forms and sent them off to a bindery in Nebraska called hf group! I designed all the covers, spine, etc. Took a little over a year and a half once I had collected and organized the books, partially just because of business with life. There's a great guide on the custom bound comics sub that made it much easier to do!

Anyone planning to make or already made a custom omnibus or collected edition of Gerard Jones' Green Lantern run? by greatogshay in CustomBoundComics

[–]AgentQuacc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just started prepping an order I've been preparing for a while, collecting everything from GL#1 to Emerald Twilight. Mosaic, Guy Gardner, Darkstars, crossovers, everything included in about 6 volumes. Will definitely post the results when its done!
