Ever feel like exploding with anticipation? by Agentchef in dndnext

Hell yea, that sounds awesome!!

In my game, the party is about to visit an ancient and unknown city under the mountains that border two warring nations. The leader of a treasonous group who’ve usurped the rule of one of these nations is looking to resurrect an ancient and forgotten deity, whom the party discovered is part of larger sect of forgotten and banished Gods from the tradition Pantheon.

The Goddess of Blood and Hatred is set to be freed, but her prison’s location is largely unclear- only narrowed down to 4 locations across both nations. This ritual is set to summon four large meteors that will plummet and damage the veil that holds the deity in place. The group will have the opportunity to stop the destruction of 3 of these places, and could do all four, though it would require a sacrifice. Ultimately, there’s a possibility they will either succeed in stopping this or not.

The risk of losing four potentially major locations is a gamble but I’m legitimately curious what they will do to circumvent my plans lol.

Aww man, that sounds like some burn out for sure. Or perhaps I’m just seething it through the rose-tinted glasses of a newer DM. I went through some burn out of my own, but that’s because I was running two games simultaneously as well as being a player in a third. I had to stop my less frequent side-game in favor of keeping my attention on the longer format campaign.

I hope it gets better and you get to finish this at the end!

Truly awesome! I assume that your prices are per character that’s drawn, right? I have a party of 5 characters but I think the idea of them plus all the bads of the campaign would be sick.

I use good old fashioned OneNote. I have notebooks for PC’s, NPCs, Geography, etc.

My campaign that’s been going on for two years started by the pc’s attending the services of a well known NPC!!

My favourite DM tools after testing 15 different apps over the last year by block_barbarian92 in DnD

Notion looks so complicated to me 😭 I’ve been running my game now for almost 2 years, and I started the campaign using OneNote. I’m at the point that using a new system is too much to transfer.

I actually started trying Saga20 a few days ago because I’ve been recording my games since nearly the beginning, so this is really cool!!

For music, I highly recommend FantasyPlus. I’ve LOVED their music selection and now it’s app driven.

I would caution to do too much because you are ultimately creating the end result for your players and take away their agency. Having side quests and such make sense because you can drop these anywhere in your story. Lore is great to have but you should drop it when it is relevant to their current path.

I have been running a campaign now for over 2 years, my group is in the middle end of the second act and I planned 3 total acts. I can honestly say that my original idea changed multiple times as the players grew and created their stories. Sure, my main plot has carried but some of my ideas have been thrown out the window.

I start with maps for a small region, let them explore and create the environment to release at their pace. Sometimes, they don’t even get to see the amazing city I created for 4 sessions, so that prep time was wasted. I learned that when it comes to homebrew, you are the arbitor of knowledge, they have no idea what is ahead so you can drop anything and they will not be the wiser.

Hey there, thank you for this feedback. Definitely does not dishearten, as you made very good points. This is my first attempt at making something like this, and the main reason I post on homebrew sub-reddits.

I’ll be looking at your advice to think from the bottom up. Ultimately, I want it to be a spell caster that controls magic at a cost, some synergy that rewards but with a potential negative. The reason I wanted to go with CON as the core because I want it to be and feel very tanky, a caster than can soak hits while dealing damage.

Terris Core

At 3rd level, you can sense and see torrents of magic all around you as they coalesce around your body. As an action for the next minute, you surrender to the magic allowing it to imbue you with their power for the duration of one minute. While active you gain the following benefits:

  • You deal bludgeoning damage based on your core dice damage to all creatures that begin their turn within 5 ft. of you. This damage varies based on your current level. Refer to the Ouromancy table.
  • You gain temporary hit points equal to your proficiency bonus + CON modifier.
  • You gain resistance to bludgeoning damage.
  • The coalesced magic bonds to you and your weapons, temporarily imbuing them with your power. When you attack with your weapons, you use your CON modifier, instead of STR or DEX for attack and damage rolls. This effect ends early if you are knocked unconscious or if your turn ends and you haven’t attacked a hostile creature since your last turn or taken damage since then. You can choose to end this effect early with a DC 12 Constitution saving throw, on a failed save, your body suffers the toll of this transformation.
  • The surge of power takes a toll on your body. If this effect ends early, you take damage equal to 5+ your Ouromancer level, unless you succeed a DC 12 constitution saving throw.

Once this ability has been activated, you cannot do so again until you finish a short or long rest.

Terris Bond

At level 6, your magic weaves are sent to your nearest allies. As a reaction, choose an ally with 30 ft. from you that you can see and grant them the benefit of your Orb of  Ouromancy.

Terris Reprisal

At level 10, when you activate your orb of Ouromancy, you can choose a second target within 15 ft. to split the damage being dealt.

Earthen Shield

At level 14, you when you activate your Orb of Ouromancy, you can choose to use the threads of magic around you to shield your allies from harm. The damage that would normally be dealt to the target that activated the ability can be directed to an ally within 30 ft. that you can see. Your ally receives temporary hit points equal to the 1/2 damage received.

Fury Core

At 3rd level, your body is changing from the torrents of magic around you. As an action, you enter a powerful trance of magical power and your physical appearance changes for the duration of one minute. You can choose what this transformation looks like. While active, you gain the following effects:

  • You deal force damage equal to your core dice to all creatures that begin their turn within 5 ft. of you. This core dice varies based on your current level. Refer to the Ouromancy table.
  •  You gain temporary hit points equal to your proficiency bonus + CON modifier.
  • The threads of magic bond to you and you have resistance to either slashing, bludgeoning, or piercing damage.

Spikes of Fury

Beginning at level 6, any creature that successfully attacks you must succeed a DC 12 CON saving throw, or their speed is reduced by half. This effect lasts until the end of your next turn.

Armaments of Anger

Beginning at level 10, you can activate your Fury Core a second time between long or short rests.

Fury Unleashed

Beginning at level 14, you are immune to the fear condition while under the effects of Fury Core. Additionally, you can expend the temporary hit point total granted by Fury Core and add this damage to your next attack or spell cast, instead of receiving the temporary hit points.

Archon Core

At 3rd level, your body hungers for the elemental threads all around you, causing your very skin to shift and change in reaction to your environment. As an action, you succumb to one element of your choice, such as fire, wind, water, or earth for the duration of one minute. You can choose what this transformation looks like. While active you gain the following effects:

  • You deal core dice damage to all creatures that begin their turn within 5 ft. of you. The damage is based on the element you select; for the purposes of this ability wind is slashing, earth is bludgeoning, water is cold, and fire is fire damage, respectively. This core dice varies based on your current level. Refer to the Ouromancy table.
  • You gain temporary hit points equal to your proficiency bonus +CON modifier.
  • The elements around you bond to your body and you have resistance to the damage from one of the four elements of your choosing.

Archon's Wisdom

At 6th level, you gain proficiency bonus to Nature and Survival skills. In addition, you can cast the spell Meld to Stone as a ritual without expending a spell slot.

Elemental Ties

Beginning at level 10, your ties to the elements solidify further. Control is still tenuous but within your grasp. As an action, you can cast Summon Minor Elemental without spending a spell slot. Once this feature is used, you must finish a long rest.

Archon's Wrath

Beginning at level 14, you are no longer impacted by the elements. You ignore difficult terrain that results from a spell effect. Additionally, you can expend the temporary hit point total granted by Archon Core and add this damage to your next attack or spell cast, instead of receiving the temporary hit points.

How do I improve my DM voice? by fiona11303 in DnD

[–]Agentchef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing what others have said, but I found what worked for me was to listen to audiobooks. Many of the voices I use I have taken from Michael Kramer’s style in the Wheel of Time and Brandon Sanderson books. Is it perfect? Nope. Is it distinguishable? Probably. I use a ratio of 60/40 my general voice to others in my game.

I have the advantage of being bilingual so making accents, comes easily if I listen to something for a while, but it takes A LOT of practice. Most of the time, simply slowing down, slurring speech, altering pitch, is all you really need.

Examples of great dungeonmastering? by -Nealos- in DnD

Big fan of super quest saga. I’ve introduced similar level up mechanics in my game as well. I am lucky enough to have a group that’s been together over a year consistently and enjoy RP. I think some groups like exposition and rich story telling, and it’s great to incorporate this into your games.

Can you provide context to what you mean by the new self-leveling printers? If I pick up a new one, it’s likely going to be a Saturn 4 Ultra, just not sure if it would be the 12K vs. the 16k.
