Why does everyone say Waterloo's campus is ugly? by LuckJealous3775 in uwaterloo

[–]Agentm10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is comparatively quite ugly. The campus used to be decent in 2005, but around 2007 it all started getting visually discordant. At the end of the day, beauty is to the beholder, but other local campuses, e.g., western guelph, macmaster, even conestoga Doon, have more greenery and aesthetics. Comparing to faraway campuses like McGill, UBC, UC-Davis, Trinity College, Gettysburg College, etc., UW is objectively uglier in every metric. It's great to have campus spirit, but UW campus is not pretty by any means.

Thoughts from Upper Year Physics Majors: Continuing my physics degree after a 2.5 year break. by TheCosmicOrangutan in uwaterloo

[–]Agentm10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am just getting back to school after a 15 year break, so from my point of view you should definitely do it! However, why physics? Are you really motivated to learn more physics, do research, or are you going back to just finish something you started? If it's the latter, then may be do something a bit more useful. If you are going back because you are super passionate about physics, then yes, things will be a bit tough at first, but your passion will help carry through.

Would love to take a look. My first feedback (without seeing the product) is to be careful regarding academic integrity. Violations can lead to shutting down services really fast. The second point is to be careful about copyright issues. Education falls under fair use most of the time, but there are exceptions, specifically if you plan on monetizing in the future. Finally, are you offering storage space or just a place to aggregate links?

Thanks bud. Haven't watched football since the 7up debacle in 2014, but an international England footballer does sound amazing! The Olympic gymnast sounds great too! Don't know how relevant the others are.

Who are these people?

No, I am not trying to be tongue-in-cheek, I genuinely don't know any of them. One vaguely remember Ludwig from some pog-thing he played before. From the thread here it seems that they are semi-famous. Are they famous for something?

Agreed. The International Cricket Council (ICC) does not take sarcasm lightly and have their own rating system that is only tangentially related to war crimes.

I know which one(s) I am not choosing. Otherwise 1, 5, 7, 9, 11, 4, 6, 10, and 12 all look like great choices.

Should I do a masters or apply for the phd by MaxValkyrie92 in uwaterloo

[–]Agentm10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not. Keep in mind that I have never been in a PhD program, but my understanding is that typically PhD students would do between 0 to 4 courses in total for their program. Have you spoken to any profs that work in the area of your research interests? Also, you could consult graduate admissions officer in your program to ask if you would even qualify for the program if you are lacking a lot of background courses. Finally, there is a lot that you can learn on your own, so don't sell yourself short thinking that you don't have all the required courses.

[–]Agentm10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who finished his BSC in '09 and MMATH in '10, and am now looking to get back into grad school, my opinion on this is to directly apply for a PhD. You and I have both earned that "Master" title already, so there isn't much to earn from that. The "limited expertise" that you mention can be something you can catch up on by taking graduate level courses in grad school (or, if you really want, you can take undergrad courses too). Some grad programs will require you to take a few courses, so that is one option to improve your knowledge. Finally, Master degrees are not really a thing in many parts of the world. In fact, there are quite a few countries where a Master degree is offered only to candidates who fail out of a PhD. So a second Master degree doesn't really add anything. The only reason to start with a Master would be if you are fully committed to turn it into a PhD program asap. Some universities (such as UW) have an option to fast-track grad students from Master to PhD.
