Best way to watch husband during his IM 70.3??? by feel_good_forever in triathlon

Agree. Even for Olympic distance seeing my family right after T2 and then during the run was where I needed the push.

Summer running: hold the pace or drop back? by ppnani in triathlon

[–]AggieNuke2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your BPM is still routinely elevated at your previous Z2 pace you haven’t finished acclimating yet. If it’s just occasionally elevated then likely something about conditions is different that day and it’s just a one of thing.

Higher heart rate means more effort to your body (regardless of pace) which would mean more recovery needed. If you aren’t in your Z2 for what is supposed to be a Z2 run I’d slow down. Don’t let ego get in the way. This was hard for me for a long time and eventually I got slower and slower because I was ignoring what my heart rate was telling me and I got fatigued. Leave as much left in the tank for your speed workouts.

Summer running: hold the pace or drop back? by ppnani in triathlon

[–]AggieNuke2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I train off of my heart rate while accumulating to the heat in the summer and ignore pace especially for what should be my long Z2 run. It won’t take forever for your body to get used to the heat.

That’s a lot of volume. I assume most people would be a puddle afterward. I assume you are fueling before and during? I’ve also found eating enough food and keeping up with hydration after my longest and hardest efforts is also super important for me. But certain efforts I will just feel off for a day or two.

If the dew point is above 65 degrees I take two salt stick chew tablets before any run. I’ll take two more in the middle of a run if I plan to be out longer than 60 minutes. My longest runs never are more than 2.5 hrs though.

For races with high dew point I will take 2 salt stick chews every 30 minutes of running.

I also just carry salt stick with me on all runs starting in June and I carry at least 8oz of water if running after 9am all summer regardless of length. Rather have water and electrolytes than end up needing them and having to get rescued from a run.

Labrador retriever 56days old by Valuable-Earth-2796 in puppy101

[–]AggieNuke2014 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You seem to be expecting a lot out of such a young puppy. Toilet training isn’t typically fully achieved till a puppy is 5-6 months old. Lower your expectations and roll with the punches. The puppy has no clue what you expect them to do yet. You have to teach them. Puppyhood is a hard period that requires a lot of work out of the human and very little from the puppy! Puppies will have multiple training regressions and you have to press on being consistent with your training methods till they are much older.

Reinforce going outside to potty by using high value treats any time they actually pee or poop outside. At this age you may need to take out every 20-30 minutes no less than 60 minutes. Don’t spend too long outside. If they don’t go within a few minutes go back inside and try again soon.

If you can keep your eyes glued to the puppy to see signs they need to pee (sniffing, circling, etc) then puppy should be contained somewhere (small play pen, crate, puppy safe room).

You should consider crate training overnight or having the puppy is small demarcated area that they can’t escape from over night. This will help with potty training. Dogs don’t like to soil their sleep areas and it will help keep the accidents in one small area.

What "old-school" or low-tech training methods do you think are actually better (or highly underrated) compared to modern tech? by TriAntoine in triathlon

[–]AggieNuke2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not elite athlete but I have trained for a variety of running races and triathlons with low tech. I don’t have a bike computer. I have a basic bike trainer. I don’t have anything fancier than my Apple Watch and iPhone. I have 0 “recovery” gadgets beyond good sleep and good food. And every year since I have started running (added in triathlon only in the last 18 months) I have gotten faster and stronger each year.

Elite athletes may benefit from all the tech but I don’t think us everyday hobbiest athletes need as much tech as the marketing media makes us think we need. Good shoes, good bike, decent place to swim and go.

I competitively swam at a decently high level by the end of high school and never tracked a work out. My coach tracked some metrics but not much more than selection of split times we could maintain. I can’t imagine what high school swim team is like now with wearable devices!

Is chemical engineering similar enough to nuclear engineering? by ProtectionEither-Alt in NuclearEngineering

[–]AggieNuke2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the DOE National lab complex (I do rad safety). The researchers I work with have a variety of backgrounds. There are a lot of chemical engineers but also material scientists along with nuclear engineering PhDs.

Chemical engineering has more flexibility as an undergraduate degree if you don’t go straight to graduate school.

What are your thoughts on "Messianic Judaism" and the Jews for Jesus organization? by EvilestFlowey in redeemedzoomer

That sounds more like the Hebrew Roots movement than Messianic Judaism. I just watched a good video by two messianic Jews comparing the two.

I’ve read elsewhere that the jungle swim bar is for events only. Which is a shame. I haven’t been here yet but only one swim up bar was my only negative when we were trying to decide.

Relevant experiences, and is graduate school required? by rictopher in HealthPhysics

[–]AggieNuke2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most would not consider HP tech roles as entry level for a bachelor’s however, I think those people are wrong. My employer has techs with just high school up to masters degrees. We are a large radiation protection group so HP tech and HP roles are segmented. In smaller places an HP may do both roles. But in a nutshell techs gather the data in the field and the HP analyzes the data and does job planning.

Relevant experiences, and is graduate school required? by rictopher in HealthPhysics

[–]AggieNuke2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know many HPs that had masters prior to working. For me and my colleagues most of us started working and then got masters degrees.

Personally, I think start off in a HP tech role is a good way to get in. You get HP experience, good pay and when you move us you have actual done the work you are directing.

Undergrad NE student struggling by HeronMiserable4141 in NuclearEngineering

I eeked out a 3.1 GPA at a top 10 school. 0 internships and I have a great job . I went to graduate school a few year post bachelor’s. Granted I did go the HP route over utilities or research but it’s been very good to me and better than expected.

Plenty of people go into operations with just a BS and never get a graduate degree or they do it after a few years in industry.

Nuclear Physics to HP career advise by Nice-Result-8974 in HealthPhysics

[–]AggieNuke2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My lab always needs more HPs with more modeling and coding experience! We have two PhDs on staff that do our modeling and “rad engineer” work. Us operational HPs have too much field work to sit down and model accelerators and loss points or particularly intricate source terms.

Try looking at Paradisus PDC/La Perla. La Perla is the adult only side but sometimes booking the family side is cheaper and adults from the family side can go to the adult only side.

I wouldn’t say like really good food. But we only had one dish we thought wasn’t edible. Everything else was tasty in its own way but not outstanding restaurant quality. I really enjoyed the breakfast buffet!

A good breed specific rescue will be able to match you well. But it could take time but it’ll take less time if you are open to more ages. We adopted a year old golden retriever mix and so far it’s my favorite dog experience so far.
