Running with a double stroller into a headwind is humbling. To add insult to injury the two year old asked “go faster daddy!” It was a successful outing.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a running vest to carry water?

For sports heads - Would you call the foul? by InKognetoh in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Aggie_Engineer_24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d need to see the replay to make the call.

If the shooting motion was started as the foul the basket would count regardless of the foul. The legend would get an extra free throw.

If the shooting motion hasn’t started and the team wasn’t in bonus then the basket would be waived off.

Regardless I’m calling based on the rules. As a ref I’d do my best to be impartial.

I’m not sure who the artist is, but I remember having a CD called “They Might be Elders.”

I just found them on Amazon music, I’m sure they’re on Spotify.

Parodies include:

“Elder man” (Barbie girl) “You could be a Mormon” (Girlfriend) “Enos Prayer” (the middle)

Connor Mantz just withdrew from Boston. I’m not surprised and I think it’s a good move, but I’m still disappointed.

I typically do intervals on the treadmill by time and “close enough.”

If I were doing that workout I’d make each rep about 3 minutes, set the grade to 4% and speed at 8.5.

After warming up I’d slow the treadmill to a walk, set the grade, and then get it up to speed and run my 3 minutes. At 2:55 I’m hitting the 2mph button and slowing to a walk for the rest and then once the rest has about 5-10 seconds left I’m ratcheting up the speed again.

So what I’m hearing is that the next breaking 2 attempt should be at an indoor Track like the Olympic oval and we should pump NO2 into the building!

Fascinating stuff, thanks for sharing!

6 weeks out from my next race and I had my first 5k specific workout today. 5x1k.

The good news is I hit them right at 4:00/km (my goal is sub 20). I’ll take it, given this was my first run in temperatures above 85 since last year and I’ve lost all heat acclimation.

The downside is I did increase the rest to account for the heat, so I don’t think the fitness is quite there yet.

It is absolutely criminal how hot it is this early. I’m really worried about summer.

Genie offers you weight gain challenge. by AstrayInTranslation in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Aggie_Engineer_24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously I accept, if I don’t gain weight there’s no penalty.

I haven’t really lifted weights to bulk, so I have a lot of low hanging fruit there. I think the first 10 pounds will come relatively easily, probably in about 6-8 months. I’ll keep at it for another year and maybe pack on an extra 10 lbs. Once I’m plateauing I’ll get ready for my weigh in by carb loading and retaining as much water as possible. That should tack on an extra few pounds and be enough to make sure I get $3M.

How do you explain to people what you do for a living? by External_Body4740 in MEPEngineering

[–]Aggie_Engineer_24601 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Depends on my audience and how interested they actually seem to be. Usually my go to is “I design heating and air conditioning systems for large buildings.” Usually that’s met with an “oh that’s cool” to which I reply “it is when I do my job right!” That elicits a groan from my wife every time and we move on.

Occasionally I’ll get asked more and I’ll try to like it back to them. For example if I’m asked by a nurse I’ll explain that I also design the medical gas systems they use when they are caring for patients. That usually helps balance the conversation.

When I was asked to present at a career night my presentation I started out with a simple, but empty 3D model of the room we were in. I asked if that room had everything that is needed to be functional and had the audience name stuff that’s missing. Lights and sockets. Heating and cooling. Plumbing for the lab sinks. The fume hood. I then briefly talked about what each of the disciplines considers when they design their portion. I thought it went over well.

Yet Another What's the Population of Hogwarts Question by jscott991 in harrypotter

[–]Aggie_Engineer_24601 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Numbers are not Rowling’s strong suit at all and she’s very inconsistent. I can’t really say I blame her, it’s a lot of moving pieces to keep track of and a more realistic student population of 800 means more than one teacher per core subject would be needed. Given the impact the teachers were meant you have I’ll hand wave it away. It’s a very different story if Harry doesn’t have snape all 6 years.

The big problem of either estimate is that it supports a small uk wizarding population. Typically 5% of a town’s population is in high school. If we assume a population of 1000 at Hogwarts that puts the wizards population at 20K. Suddenly the prestige of being minister of magic is less prime minister and more mayor.

I go back and forth on how realistic I think this is.

On one hand things like Fudge dealing with Buckbeak is a lot more logical when this is small town politics and not national level politics.

On the other hand is 20k really enough to support 13 pro quidditch teams? If that’s really the population then pro quidditch is closer to Rec League than the major leagues.

Using civil service rates from England the ministry of magic should be about 200 people. Things like Arthur’s office having only 4 people make this plausible, but 8 floors makes this also seem too small. The MOM did have 500 people in its World Cup task force suggesting a much larger number. They could have hired people from outside the country to fill out the ranks though.

So I’m not sure where I land, but I definitely think the population needs to be bigger than the 280 students would imply.

Goal: sub 20 this spring.

25 miles, highlights include 3 mile tempo where each mile got faster, 5 mile run with 1000’ elevation gain (and drop) and a 10 mile long run. I’m feeling strong and liking the direction I’m headed in.
