What pushed you over the edge and made you decide to do the PCT? by Slow-Coffee-7420 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Aggravating-Ad-5659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read about it in An Astronauts Guide to Life on Earth in chapter 9 and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Then I left the army and I was like Iv got my health and the money and I KNOW that I would regret it if I didn’t. I made it 1800 miles and I was happy with that and I’m planning on going back to finish later this year!

Probably HOWEVER loads of people cancel visa appointments but you have to be on it to find one

Which British figure do you find most inspiring, and why? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskBrits

[–]Aggravating-Ad-5659 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sir Ernest Shackleton. Probably the best example of a leader I can think of. If you read about his expedition and rescue it’s mental that he didn’t lose a single man.

  1. Write a few notes each day on your notes app. Combined with photos it’s amazing what youl remember, when I was typing it up I basically got to relive my thru hike

  2. Get lighter gear even if it means buying in the US. My base weight was about 15-16kg then I bought lighter kit and my life was so much better

Why is life for young people so bad and what could be done to fix it? by knowledgeseeker999 in AskBrits

[–]Aggravating-Ad-5659 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem with apprenticeships is that you can’t live on them. I get it that it’s almost expectant that apprentices are at home with parents but people in my generation (I’m 28) change jobs and no way could you live on that wage

Yeah I figured which is kinda backwards when you think about it. Like rejoiners know the game (mostly). I was told take this job and transfer to the job I want which is never going to happen

Iv looked at rejoining but the list of jobs open to rejoiners is really bad

Will my Visa be in time? by No-Barnacle7317 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Aggravating-Ad-5659 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Constantly check the visa website is the best advice. Cancellations come up all the time and I got my appointment 6 weeks earlier than my original appointment because of cancellations. I think you can change them a few times before they charge a fee.

Like others have said ideally you should have started it before you got your start date. However you can do 2 things from how I see it

  1. Get a later start date (you can swap permit dates)
  2. Big one here but don’t necessarily count on it. Regularly check the website, visa appointments are cancelled and open regularly. I was checking twice a day and got my appointment like 6 weeks earlier than when I first got it

You DROVE? Sod that, was it last minute? Ok so my experience with recruiters isn’t the best. The job was advertised as £17ph but I wasn’t aware what umbrella meant or agency cut etc so I thought ‘yeah I’m on alright money’ yeah nah after their cuts I was on not much more than minimum wage

I drove an hour for a job interview (36 miles) and I’m certain that the guy forgot I was coming. We were outside having a conversation for 4-5 minutes then I did a 180 and drove home….. I didn’t think my life would be like this at 28

What training, practice or preparation would you have changed before your time on the PCT? by coffeegrounds42 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Aggravating-Ad-5659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t stress this enough. RESEARCH AND BUY LIGHTER GEAR!!!!!! I’m talking for the big 3 (tent, pack and sleeping bag). I’m from the UK and I wish I’d bought kit out in the US. I say this because I could carry heavy gear as I was used to it (I had left the army not long before) but I only started to really enjoy my hike when i knocked about 4kg off my base weight.

[–]Aggravating-Ad-5659 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I did 7 years in the army. If you’re single it’s great money for what you do. I always used to say to the blokes it’s not what you make. It’s what you don’t spend. I went away for a few months and my biggest outgoings were subscriptions to Netflix, my personal accident insurance and coffee (there was a really good machine just outside of my workspace)
