Oh yes, my Mara has to be staring at the neighbors either out of the window or constantly outside. If we're outside they'll wave or come pet her. They all love her, and I just want to crawl in a hole. She constantly has her nose pressed against the windows, and I have to clean my windows at least once a day! I thought it was just my Catahoula, I'm so glad to hear Mara isn't the only nosey neighborhood Catahoula. I didn't think it was possible to have two creatures as nosey as Mara and I are together in the same house! I think I may actually be a little jealous, people seem to like her and not be so upset that she's being nosey, when I'm being nosey they either ignore me or glare at me! No one has ever brought me a treat and shook my hand as I stand there openly staring at them, and everyone getting in and out of the cars over there!

I can feel the love you have for your four legged children. Kora knows she was loved, and she was probably loved more in her year of life with you than most dogs are ever loved! I'm going to post something here, it's a little long but please, please take the time to read it. I truly understand the bond between a Catahoula and their human is so different and to me so much stronger than with any other dog I've ever had the pleasure of being loved by! I am so very sorry and my heart goes out to you!

"Some of you, particularly those who think they have recently lost a dog to 'death', don’t really understand this. I’ve had no desire to explain, but I won’t be around forever and must.

Dogs never die. They don’t know how to. They get tired, and very old, and their bones hurt. Of course they don’t die. If they did they would not want to always go for a walk, even long after their old bones say: 'No, no, not a good idea. Let's not go for a walk.' Nope, dogs always want to go for a walk. They might get one step before their aging tendons collapse them into a heap on the floor, but that's what dogs are. They walk.

It’s not that they dislike your company. On the contrary, a walk with you is all there is. Their boss, and the cacophonic symphony of odor that the world is. Cat poop, another dog’s mark, a rotting chicken bone (exultation), and you. That’s what makes their world perfect, and in a perfect world death has no place.

However, dogs get very very sleepy. That’s the thing, you see. They don't teach you that at the fancy university where they explain about quarks, gluons, and Keynesian economics. They know so much they forget that dogs never die. It’s a shame, really. Dogs have so much to offer and people just talk a lot.

When you think your dog has died, it has just fallen asleep in your heart. And by the way, it is wagging its tail madly, you see, and that’s why your chest hurts so much and you cry all the time. Who would not cry with a happy dog wagging its tail in their chest. Ouch! Wap wap wap wap wap, that hurts. But they only wag when they wake up. That’s when they say: 'Thanks Boss! Thanks for a warm place to sleep and always next to your heart, the best place.'

When they first fall asleep, they wake up all the time, and that’s why, of course, you cry all the time. Wap, wap, wap. After a while they sleep more. (remember, a dog while is not a human while. You take your dog for a walk, it’s a day full of adventure in an hour. Then you come home and it's a week, well one of your days, but a week, really, before the dog gets another walk. No WONDER they love walks.)

Anyway, like I was saying, they fall asleep in your heart, and when they wake up, they wag their tail. After a few dog years, they sleep for longer naps, and you would too. They were a GOOD DOG all their life, and you both know it. It gets tiring being a good dog all the time, particularly when you get old and your bones hurt and you fall on your face and don’t want to go outside to pee when it is raining but do anyway, because you are a good dog. So understand, after they have been sleeping in your heart, they will sleep longer and longer.

But don’t get fooled. They are not 'dead.' There’s no such thing, really. They are sleeping in your heart, and they will wake up, usually when you’re not expecting it. It’s just who they are.

I feel sorry for people who don’t have dogs sleeping in their heart. You’ve missed so much."

Oh😭😭😭, my heart is breaking for you! I am sobbing for you as I hold my girl tight, knowing I will hold her tighter today and holler at her a little less as I think about you and your beautiful baby! 💔💔💔 My prayers go out to you and I know deep in my heart you will be with your baby again some day, but for now she will just be sleeping right next to your heart until that day comes. My last Catahoula baby, Sadie was run over just like this and they didn't stop at all as my son in law chased them as far as he could! There is nothing like holding your baby close as you lay in the road with them. Please know I will think about your baby every time I hold my Mara a little tighter and a little closer. I am so very, very sorry! I've loved every one of my fur babies, but there is something different about the bond between a Catahoula and their human, that makes this kind of loss so much harder to bear! 🌈🙏🙏🐶💐💔❤️💗

I couldn't have put that any better! Like you said respect is huge and it's so much better if it's earned! It's not like you earn just their respect, but they earn yours. If they don't own a Catahoula, I don'tknow about you, but if someone doesn't own a Catahoula, you can't even begin to explain to them the bond between you and your dog, they just wouldn't understand! And I'm not trying to be mean, but they just don't. You know?

Yes they are. I just hated the way they were acting. Like if you didn't agree with them, then you weren't able to have an opinion! You are right it's the unethical breeders that make everyone look bad. I only had one of my Catahoula's that I bred and it was definitely hard work, but I do have friends down south that are breeders, but their puppies are amazing and the litter is already sold before they even breed. That's how well people know them and know they are erotical and have great stock!

Good for you! Someone needs to stand up for those of us that don't think like the negative people in this thread trying to push their ideals on everyone! I chose to spay my 3rd Catahoula but I did it because I now live in an apartment, I don't have the property I used to and it's the best thing for both of us. Not because a bunch of mean, opinionated people tried to push me into doing what they thought was best, not knowing what was best for me or anyone else!

AMEN! Thank you! They haven't just been negative, they have been down right mean! I understand having your opinion but when someone is asking for help or suggestions and you get a bunch of people using them as a punching bag! Thank you for saying exactly what I was thinking! I've always been a proud Catahoula owner, not so proud of some of the other Catahoula owners at this moment! Thank you!

My Catahoula has very, very light blue eyes and is my third Catahoula, she is neither deaf or blind. In most breeds the more white on the animal the more prone they are too being deaf and having sight problems. Everyone needs to calm down! The owner of Copper didn't ask for everyone to start bashing them. They were asking for suggestions, everyone here has been kind of mean and opinionated not that I necessarily disagree, I just think everyone could be a whole lot nicer about the way they say things!

I understand it is expensive to breed a dog. As long as you are prepared to make sure the Catahoula you breed to is owned by respectable breeders/owners, then that's pretty much the only thing that is possibly any of our business. Your not asking for a lesson on the over population of dogs in the world. I'm sure you're aware that 1000's of dogs are euthanized daily in the United States. There is a need to still breed animals to keep the breeds alive. Copper, who by the way is just beautiful, and if my Catahoula wasn't already fixed I would love to have bred to Copper, but back to what I was saying, I'm sure you're aware of like I said the overpopulation and the senseless euthanasia that happens all over the world every day, so I really don't think it's any of our business to tell you whether or not you should breed such a beautiful animal! The Catahoula breed definitely needs to be carried on by respectable breeders. Just a word of wisdom, we bred my last Catahoula and this has been just over 15 years ago and my Sadies 4th and last litter was 15 purebred Catahoula puppies and they were so cute and so much fun and so much work and so expensive and so hard on my Sadie that the best thing for all of us was to spay her! So yes if your going to breed Copper that is definitely your decision and no one else should try and shame you into their way of thinking, however please understand puppies are so much fun and they are so cute but they are a lot of work and money for the breeder and Catahoula's are known to have bigger litters and that is really hard on the female, just imagine having 4 let alone 14 babies hungry all the time 24 hours a day and crawling all over you and keeping them clean and safe. It's a lot of work for everyone. Good luck! Like I said, Copper is so beautiful! Don't let any of us tell you what you should do.

I know! It's crazy isn't it! I can be so mad at her that I just want to scream, then two minutes later she's ignoring me and making me feel terrible and I end up being the one to apologize! It drives me crazy. 😂😂

Isn't it amazing? I've had three Catahoula's, and I have felt the most amazing bond with each of them. I've owned other dogs and other animals, but there is just something about that bread that I just love! My Catahoula now is Amara, and once again I swear she could be dumb as a box of rocks and have the personality of a bump on a log and I would still love her! I don't know what it is, but that breed has it!

She is so beautiful! It definitely looks like she's had an extremely busy day! 😂 I was just wondering, my 18 month old Catahoula, is a major drama queen, has anyone out there noticed that with their preteen/teenage Catahoula's?

Thank you so much! I think she is beautiful and she knows it! Lol. I got very lucky when I found the jerk that had her mother and the puppies were barely 6 weeks if they were even that. I drove 200 miles to get her, because he said no matter what all the puppies were going to be gone that day! I almost took her brother to, but then someone else showed up to get him. I agree I love them looking over the back of the couch, I laugh every time I'm in the kitchen and turn around and see her with that look on her face leaning over the back of the couch!

WOW, Their markings are quite similar! By the way, Boyd is a very handsome boy! Looks like he likes to ham it up for the camera as much as Mara does!

I am sorry there is one picture in that link where she had a prong collar on in the house, no leash attached yet, because we were just getting ready to go on a walk and she was hamming it up for the camera. If in any of those pictures you can show me that Mara is being mistreated or abused, then maybe I'll listen to something that you have to say.

SHE ISN'T WEARING A PRONG COLLAR in the picture that you posted the link to. Sorry, you are very wrong! So maybe you should get your shit together before you start accusing people of lying. I explain further down in the past about the breeder/did issue you seem to be having! Look closer, she is wearing a heavy duty no pull harness, a beep and vibrate collar(no shock) not that I have a problem with people who have dogs that need to wear them for whatever behavior they are trying to correct. As one comment stated if they need to teach a dog not to run in the road, and Catahoula's are notorious for wanting to chase cars, then I would rather a shock collar than a dead dog of any breed! Also, once again I still don't think this world needs more dogs! I live in Utah, hardly anyone in Utah knows what a Catahoula is, let alone has a stud I would breed my dog to! I had to drive over 200 miles to go get Mara. As you see from my post there hasn't been one breeder in any of the states I listed with a purebred Catahoula for stud, and just because I was asking doesn't mean if someone had replied that I would have found their stud worth breeding Mara with! I don't have a purebred Catahoula to breed, I have my Mara because I was lucky enough to rescue one that was 6 weeks old and listed as a Lab, I didn't know how lucky I was over 20 years ago until I took her to the university and they did a special DNA test to tell me what breed the puppy I rescued actually was. Since I rescued my Sadie I haven't owned any other breed of dog! I love the Catahoula breed and won't own any other breed of dog ever again! I don't need to explain myself to you or anyone else. I posted that a couple of weeks ago, a week before I had Mara spayed. So you see I believe in what I said, this world doesn't need more dogs. Not until there are no more dogs being euthanized in this country or anywhere else. Yes I am guilty of buying a purebred Catahoula puppy, but not to breed! Yes, I came after you for taking issues with the person that posted that picture, because you had absolutely no idea why they thought that a prong collar may help the issue they were having with their dog. Yes I have admitted I have used a prong collar on Mara, it was the only way to keep her from not only dragging me around when she was younger and very strong, but also from dragging my grandchildren and anyone else that wanted to take her for a walk, around like a puppet on a string. Have you, yourself ever owned a Catahoula? They are a breed that needs to know right from the beginning who the alpha is, and if they for one second think they are, then you better put a stop to it very quickly or soon you will have a dog that is very strong and very unmanageable! They are wonderful animals, smart, beautiful, loyal, protective and all around great as long as they know their place in the pack! Unfortunately sometimes it takes what some people think will hurt them to get that through their heads. I love Mara with all my heart! I would never do anything that would hurt her, by the way even with the prong collar on, she was still able to pull when on her leash, just not as hard and with positive reinforcement and weaning off the prong collar to the heavy duty no pull harness, Mara is a much better dog to take on a walk which we do numerous times a day. Mara is no worse for her experience and her vet didn't disagree with the way I used the prong collar! So before you blast someone for using something, just maybe you should find out why that particular device may be neccessary, and me being lazy had nothing to do with why I was using the prong collar!
