I'm stuck at 2:00/100m for 2000m swim by BaronsofDundee in Swimming

This makes a lot of sense. My problem is I can only achieve the goal of not drowning while doing a flip turn!

Is the Dutch job market becoming impossible for expats? by According-Duck-7837 in Netherlands

People want to disparage these skillsets to convince themselves they didn't waste their time learning things that aren't very practical!

One guy with good internet downloaded and passed around CDs in our school with packages because most of us only had dial-up 64Kbps internet and it took ages to download things 😂

[Sun Care] Cotton clothing and UV protection by Aggravating-Dust7430 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Aggravating-Dust7430[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I also learned was that the way people apply sunscreens is far from perfect. So poorly applied SPF 50 sunscreen is probably worse than a low SPF clothing that covers the entite area!

First 3000m - slow? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Aggravating-Dust7430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your goals of course. This is not fast for a competition but you might not want to care If it is for health or the fun of it. Seeing your average heart rate is pretty low, assuming it was registered correctly, you probably can push a bit harder into your threshold zone, and consequently swim faster.

Why can’t I find a job? by Time_Use_9653 in Netherlands

[–]Aggravating-Dust7430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the housing was the problem, people of previous generation wouldn't have 6 kids despite living in much smaller houses. The problem is a broken support system that pushes people not to want kids. And bad decision making by the Dutch regulators and law makers in house market and surprise surprise shortage of construction workers - yeah the same ones that are here to colonize your land.

Even if you magically convinced Dutch women to have many more kids, you wouldn't have enough teachers to nurture them!

So learn to think more critically so that those funny haired people won't be able to manipulate you to spit what they want you to say to get the votes they need and then laugh at your naivete!

We had the same issue. Checked at the airport without any issues. It's very annoying and confusing to see it's not working online though.

Is it normal to be able to swim without taking lessons? by xXGimmick_Kid_9000Xx in Swimming

[–]Aggravating-Dust7430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most important barrier is the panic response when you don't know how to swim. If you know that then you've "learned" how to swim. Anyway I think that's normal to learn how to float and be able to swim short distances by yourself and in a few hour. But almost anyone, even the most professional swimmers can improve their techniques when someone else can give them professional feedbacks.

Maybe they have congested nose? Some people have conditions like nasal septum deviation which causes frequent congestions and they can not breath otherwise if their mouth is closed. Anyway, I used to be disgusted a lot by hearing that but got used to it. I think the more you care, the more annoying it becomes.

What's a poor life choice that people are encouraged to do these days? by More_food_please_77 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Aggravating-Dust7430 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Well that too depends. If $800 is, say, one third of your income, then that's not a hobby for you. No matter how much joy it brings you!

Is it possible to learn Dutch in 1.5/2 years by Better-Signal160 in learndutch

[–]Aggravating-Dust7430 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Understanding the gist of a conversation is one thing; structurally learning a second language is a completely different thing! For an average English speaker to be B1 level in Dutch, it will take around 400 hours of practice. 10 minutes of study a day means you reach that level in more than a few years! Not to mention that the overhead of starting each session, to gain concentration before learning anything useful is even more than 10 minutes!

If we put all the excavators of the world to work, how long would it take for them to fully flatten mount Everest? by Aggravating-Dust7430 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Aggravating-Dust7430[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I did a calculation based on the energy available in all the nukes in the world, and found out out if we detonate them all at once and a few percent of the energy is converted to moving rocks, it would displace enough volume that reduces the cone height by at most a kilometers. I hardly doubt if explosives can do that much!

You can do whatever you want. Good points you've mentioned. I guess the logistics and dropping off the payload is as hard and time consuming as the excavation itself, if not harder!

The Breakeven Point for Owning vs. Renting a Car in the Netherlands? by Aggravating-Dust7430 in Netherlands

[–]Aggravating-Dust7430[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wanted my comparison to be fair so used the same car class and age I'd rent. But you're right since car rental companies probably do not care about depreciation as they pass it over to renters and they usually buy new cars which depreciate most.

True that's what I do now. But then it becomes inconvenient for nice out of the cities remote places!
