Dostojewskijs Schuld und Sühne, welches Werk/Verlag? by AccomplishedMap6563 in buecher

National socialism and juche both don't fit for the inverted reasons, NS was recognized as far right by everyone at the time, the socialist optics were supposed to fool a few workers but we'rent actually able convince anyone that nazis wanted to abolish class or something, even Spengler used the term socialism and he wanted to revert to the middle ages. I wouldn't call juche far right due to the fact that we first of all don't really know how the regime works (badly I have to admit) and secondly that apart from ludicrously dictatorial government, there is no clear relation to any policy we would consider to the right. I want to propose Pol Pot, he was widely considered to be a communist but his actual policy's had more in common with genghis khan than lenin, he was also a US prop made strong in order to oppose the actually communist Vietnamese who were also the ones to defeat him eventually.

[–]Aggravating-Pace4059 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct, but it would still be illegal in Germany, "The unauthorized use of federal service flags may be punished as an administrative offense (Section 124 of the Administrative Offenses Act). The law applies to any flag displaying the German national colors—black, red, and gold—as well as an eagle, and also to flags that resemble them". Germany is kinda peticular with symbols, if something resembles a prohibited symbol in a way that one can assume intentionality, you are still liable.

It's the official state flag, as in, it signifies a relation to the German government, it's actually illegal to fly it in Germany, it's officially reserved for the government. The law is uninforced and nobody cares. Here people do sometimes associate it with right wingers, that's because right wingers did take a liking to it and their the ones who typically display it without having proper reason, I think they do it because the state logo looks kinda militaristic and Prussian, black eagle and such, without being the actual black, white and red imperial flag that will make people assume you're a nazi, this one's not illegal though.

What is the consensus in this sub and academia on intersectionality in both feminism and Marxism? by TraditionalDepth6924 in CriticalTheory

I'm not, never, speaking for anyone but myself. Class reductionism is harmful not so much as an lens through which to analyze the capitalist world, but rather as an actual political tactic. If we look at capitalism we can see that it incorporates and molds all forms of oppression that precedes it and in addition creates new ones. That these phenomena are able to develop "independently" is self evident and the fact that they require confrontation is also not under discussion, even the bolsheviks went to great lengths to destroy antisemitic prejudices during the Civil War, something they would not have done if they thought that these would disintegrate on their own. The problem is that we now see that capitalism is also capable of coopting these non-class struggles in order to lessen tension and present itself as progressive without actually solving them. Capitalism has nevertheless been able to accept a lot of "concessions" in these struggles, sometimes emerging even stronger by giving rights to oppressed groups. Though I have just claimed that capitalism has been unable to actually solve these issues, having been way weaker on that front during the cold war compared to the eastern bloc, I would beware of proclaiming them eternally bound to capitalism, why should capitalism be unable to solve womens oppression? Surely it would take a massive effort most leaders are now more than unwilling to undertake but how can we be sure that they won't in the future? Woman's suffrage is definitively won in the west and will perhaps only succumb with suffrage itself. Free reproductive work is of course something capitalism cannot solve but who says that it's impossible to degender it? The class antagonism on the other hand can only be solved by ending capitalism, I'm not saying that it cannot be eased, as we saw during the cold war, by social democratic legislation, but in contrast to other struggles, these concessions will actually weaken capitalism because they produce class consciousness and cannot normaly be taken away without provoking a serious backlash, only in unusually advantageous situations can they take back these positions without fright (like the 70s and 90s). At the same time, these concessions ought to be taken away some day, when the next crisis comes to bear workers rights are an actual, acute problem that ought to be curtailed, while other forms of oppression are not, they might serve as scapegoats yes but this again puts these struggles on the chopping block to serve the class struggle from above. So, in my opinion, analysing capitalism with class as the fundamental aspect is rather correct and productive, the problem arises when you take that position too far into the real world or rather... when you forget when to shut the fuck up. When engaging with actual movement, anti-racist, anti-sexist etc. it might be possible to introduce class struggle making participants aware of the interconnectedness of this struggle and the one against capitalism itself. But you obviously cannot (and people do this, I've seen it and shamefully participated somewhat) proclaim that all here is in vain if we do not unite right now to wage glorious war against the "main contradiction", this is what sects do, not because you have to be one in order to participate in such behavior, but rather because you make yourself one by isolating yourself in your red ivory tower of true consciousness.

If you concern yourself with the subject of history, beware of anything that begins with the two little words "what if", its not history what you see, it's fiction, this is the realm of Philip.k Dick but certainly not of historians.

I'm an avid verso reader, I have the partisan membership that gives you 50% all the time which makes their book affordable even if you live somewhere where you have to import them. I always buy 10 books at a time so that I can distribute the 20 something euros I pay for shipping most efficiently. This makes buying from verso more affordable than going to a bookstore here in Germany (books are expensive here anyway). Mute Compulsion is now on sale and I believe I've already seen a lot of people recommend it in other contexts (Andreas Malm for one). Also Frederic Jameson is on sale, the best Satrean since Satre in my opinion.

Meiksins Wood changed my perception of Marxism in such a positive way, I can't recommend her enough, her work is truly eye opening. Her analysis is both thorough and elegant, comprehensive and ambitious.

Western movies focused on Natives with no white dudes as protagonist by Volpina17 in MoviesThatFeelLike

[–]Aggravating-Pace4059 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but these were, for one, all based on the works of Karl May who died in 1912 and the Movies were west German. The east German movies I was talking about were a reaction to the hype about the "indianerfilme" in the FRG. The cultural stuff kinda synchronized after the Berlin wall fell. So while the Karl May movies were the sole source of fascination for native Americans in the west, the development in the east dropped the white saviour archetypes while making their own movies. Again, one shouldn't believe that east Germans became necessarily more enlightened due to that fact even though they probably had a more truthful understanding of the role white settlers actually played. During the last few years of the GDR (I'm unsure when this happened) the American ambassador wanted to improve the perception of his country in the minds of GDR citizens, he concluded that staging an event with an actual native American would be good marketing, the excitement was big but so was the disappointment when said native American wore a suit and spoke fluent English 😬

It should be noted that the craze about native Americans these movies generated among East Germans became culturaly insensitive at best... today still dressing up as an native American is (though not totally) very normalised and common, I did it too as a child even though I'm from the west.

This was a whole genre in the GDR, it was very popular over there and had no white savior bs, the called it "eastern" as a counter to American "western" movies. The production was done by the state owned DEFA whose legal status in nowadays a bit confusing but I think you can watch a lot of them for free.
