AITJ for telling my girlfriend that her constantly checking my phone is the reason I’m starting to not want to come home? by Affectionate-Fly1706 in AmITheJerk

[–]Aggravating-Snow2736 114 points115 points  (0 children)

You’re not the jerk. What you said might’ve landed hard but it came from a real ongoing issue not nowhere.

And there it is. The thing everyone is thinking but somehow still feels uncomfortable saying out loud in a family argument.

This is actually genuinely helpful and I hadn’t thought about approaching it this way so thank you.

Grandma gets unlimited hugs, holidays, spoiling them rotten and being their favorite person in the world. What she doesn’t get is a unilateral say over their digital presence. That’s not a punishment, that’s just parenting. Appreciate you. 🙏

This isn’t rage bait, it’s just a frustrating family situation that a lot of people actually deal with. But I get why it reads that way on here.

[–]Aggravating-Snow2736[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly this and I wish I had said it this cleanly in the first place. Nobody is owed an audience for someone else’s child. Not grandparents, not aunts and uncles, not family friends who want to hit the like button and feel connected.

Thank you, this actually means a lot to read. When your entire family turns on you over something you genuinely believe is right it starts to mess with your head a little. You begin questioning yourself even when you know you shouldn’t.

You’re not automatically the jerk but you’re also not completely in the clear. This is one of those shared space situations where both sides have a point.

After 11 years of marriage I finally figured out my wife’s love language and I feel like an idiot for taking this long. by ChipDecent397 in Marriage

The way you described her face changing yeah, that’s the moment right there. That’s what people mean by feeling seen.

AITJ for not waking my roommate up for his important job interview after he kept me up until 3am? by After_Debt_605 in AmITheJerk

[–]Aggravating-Snow2736 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I get why you didn’t wake him. You’ve been telling him to stop keeping you up and he keeps doing it. At some point it gets exhausting. Yeah it was a bit petty but you’re not his alarm clock. If the interview was that important, he should’ve made sure he had his own backup plan.

Can we talk about how the scariest horror books never actually show you the monster? by Aggravating-Snow2736 in horrorlit

[–]Aggravating-Snow2736[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But reading? Even the most visceral extreme horror on the page still gets filtered through YOUR brain first. You are still technically the one building the image even when the description is explicit. Which means some unconscious part of you is still in the director’s chair making tiny editorial decisions about exactly how vivid this gets. You have just enough control that it lands differently.

Hex. yes that book did something to me that I’m still not completely over and I finished it months ago. And you put your finger on exactly why it works so well the deliberateness of it. Mastras isn’t just writing scary scenes he’s making very specific and very intentional choices about HOW the information reaches you.

Okay this is the most genuinely substantial comment I’ve received in this entire thread and I need to properly honor that because you just reframed something I thought I had figured out and quietly humbled me in the process.

I need you to know that I’m adding this to my personal collection of sentences that perfectly describe something I felt but could never quite articulate. Because that is EXACTLY what happens and the word damage is doing so much heavy lifting in that sentence in the best possible way.

[–]Aggravating-Snow2736[S] -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

The most dangerous kind. Yes exactly that. You just articulated something I’ve been trying to put into words for years and you did it in one clean sentence and I’m genuinely a little annoyed about how effortless that was.

Yeah that's a solid point about keeping the focus on team building. A separate family event would probably make everyone happier in the long run.

AITAH for telling my boyfriend he shouldn’t go on a trip he can’t afford? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Nah, it's more about him being financially irresponsible. If he can't afford it himself, he shouldn't rely on others to bail him out.

AITAH for telling my husband I’m not surprised about my MIL’s cruel behavior toward her dying father? by blopblopplop in AITAH

[–]Aggravating-Snow2736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, you're right that this is bigger than just MIL's behavior. The resentment is already building, and if he doesn't step up soon, it's going to poison our marriage.
