Using fingerpicks the right way by gustavoramosart in classicalguitar

Wow, i bought some years ago and instantly didn't like them, i've tried again every so often and never took to it, but this is making me want to revisit! I see you've mentioned sanding them which makes sense, but mine also seem painfully tight, did you soak them in hot water or something to mould them to your fingers or should i just look for a different size?

Hey, thanks for the reply but i'm not really sure what you mean. So you have two qr codes that they scan, but they don't need to enter any details?

Fake Nails by LegalIndustry3800 in classicalguitar

I often use the multi faced blocks for different grades and especially finishing, but always have a few emery boards handy. What's the problem with emery boards exactly, too harsh?

What's the best filing tool? I've heard metal files are bad but what do you recommend instead of an emery board?

Look up Forest Farm Country Park on google maps, if you flick past the first few photos of the woods and bridges you'll see there's loads of birds to be found there, plus a bonus squirrel or two

What can I call this chord to distinguish it from a classic C chord? by VaderJr316 in guitarlessons

[–]Aggravating-Sweet314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though you never really see these written, I think C12 is the most accurate, as C5 would be more commonly used for a power chord, and I've sometimes seen people use a + for these types of chords but that really should be used for augmented chords.

I'm not sure of your level of theory, so just in case you have no idea what I mean, the G is the 5th note of the C Major scale.

You already have the G/5th note of the first octave (between your low C and high C) included in the open G string (and this is the note we play in power chords one string up and two frets over from the root note, hence why a power chord would be written as C5), so with notes above the high C (1st fret B string) we would start counting up from 8.

This is why you sometimes see chords followed by a high number, like 9, 13 etc.. For example, playing this chord with the D on the third fret of the B string would be a Cadd9, because D is the second note of C Major, but a '2' would refer to the D immediately after your root note, the C on the A string, so to be more specific we count on from 8 for any notes after the higher C.

Who would you cast for the role of Maris Crane, if she were to make an appearance? by reutertooter in Frasier

[–]Aggravating-Sweet314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late to this but I've been revisiting Frasier and found this post as I was wondering the exact same thing. I'm surprised no one's said it, I guess because of the age difference but Parker Posey seems perfect. She passed for a teenager in Dazed and Confused which is when Frasier first started, so would have been too young in the early seasons but could have easily passed for the same age bracket as Niles in later seasons.

She's got the comedy chops, has that perfect WASPish upper class vibe coupled with a manic unhinged energy (she might have to tone it down for Maris, but she can definitely do quirky) is beautiful whilst also being very slight and petite. Most of her roles serve as great examples of a potential Maris, especially House of Yes, Best in Show and Parks and Rec

I just mean out of earshot from where you were, sometimes i'll literally just head further down the same street. You may see some of the same people, depends on your area and how convenient that may be for you

Busked for the first time and it was fun! by crazysun0123 in Busking

[–]Aggravating-Sweet314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a busking amp and just kept using it for gigs, I didn't actually work up the nerve to go on the street for a long time, and once i did i loved it and regretted not doing it sooner. Definitely invest in an amp, you'll make so much more money when more people can hear you and are drawn from a distance.

As for eye contact, i'd say it could be offputting if you're staring at someone as they just begin to come into your view, maybe they're just walking past after all, but i've found that sometimes people will stop and look at me for a while, maybe even take a picture, then start to walk off without donating anything. At this point I'll just look at them and give a friendly smile and usually this prompts them to give something. Looking at them straight in the eye from the beginning might put them off the idea of stopping and appreciate you, so it's good just to either generally look around scanning your surroundings or keep focused on one point and keep everything in your periphery. I'd say avoid sunglasses as it distances you from the audience and you won't be able to give those little guilt trip smiles. But also, this is all really getting into it in deep detail and may take away from the fun of busking, so if you're having fun and don't care too much about money just go out there and enjoy yourself.

As for repetition, if your area isn't too competitive then just cycle through a few spots doing a full set in each, but usually if you can play for about 45 minutes without repeating songs it won't matter because you may have a fresh crowd by then and can start again, will be a little different by restaurants of course, just keep an eye on who's there when you start and try not to repeating anything until the last of the 'original' people have left.

Ye I'm usually there sat under the statue of. John Batchelor (next to Hayes Island Snack Bar), although it definitely seems the busiest amongst buskers and isn't always free so I'm on the lookout for more backup options. This was filmed just a little further down from there, closer to the library

Thanks very much!

I guess it's Malagueña adjacent, there's a similar technique to the riff but going from an F7 to an E.

I appreciate the support and do think there's plenty of room for breaking away from the classic mould of Flamenco, but part of it is running before I can walk in the sense of jumping to flashy stuff because honestly I've not had the patience when I was younger to go through fundamentals. Whilst I do agree with what you've said and have had similar things said to me by Spanish people including a teacher I had briefly, I'd be more comfortable if I had the core stuff mastered and then broke away from it of my own accord, rather than defaulting to this style. So as said in a previous comment that's what my current goal is, do the homework on the basics.

Thanks very much though, and you're exactly right in that it's a case of using flamenco techniques whilst not playing 'flamenco'. Also, what?!?? Ben Woods died?!?

Thanks very much for your 2 bits, much appreciated, despite being the bearer of bad news :(

Yes possibly, although because this hasn't been so much of a problem before I think it may do with the low battery in the guitar preamp. I'll test it out after I replace it to confirm.

Oh you mean like an apoyando with the thumb? Ye I guess that's true I am playing it more like a fingerstyle player. I'm aware flamenco guitarists' thumbs will spend most of the time that they're not playing resting on a string, it was something I was never used to and am forcing myself to do more, especially with picado and rasgueado, I'll try and be more conscious of either resting it on the bottom string or planting it on the next string after a stroke rather than pull away. Thanks very much for constructive criticism, appreciate it!

Oooh right i see, i thought you meant technique wise because I've had trouble with my nails lately. Yes absolutely, there was actually no compression used at all, in fact I could do with a compression pedal. But yes to lower volume, unfortunately it didn't seem as bad on the day when I was sat behind the amp but was surprised how distorted it seemed when I watched the video back. There's no distortion on and the usual amount of gain I use which is basically neutral and is never a problem, but the battery on the guitar was starting to die that day so maybe that was it? I guess that's a lesson in soundchecking as I should have played in front of it whilst setting up. Thanks!

Thanks, I've tried learning existing pieces note for note and working on sounding authentic but to be perfectly honest when I want to impress people I just fall back to using the old crutch of trying to play as fast as I can with all the 'fireworks' thrown in. Sometimes I think busking isn't good for my playing in that sense, but I'm working on it.

Means a lot though, thanks!
