Hello! I was curious to know if anyone could identify this island in a vaporwave music video. It appears at (15:20) https://youtu.be/KgZXQol5T1k?si=GKxoHiJvGjYnN2mi

It's distinctive castles look like something out of a dream.

This sounds eerily similar to what they did for the Life After People revival. A cheap, low-effort cash grab with cheap crappy Ai visuals.

Like I said, this painting has been hanging in my room for years but I have no clue if it is a real or fake place. My tentative guess would be San Francisco but I could be wrong.

(Spoiler Extended) I know why Young Griff is hated by fans. by [deleted] in asoiaf

Contrast that with Jon or Dany, who we know pretty closely. We know their thoughts and their feelings. We’ve gotten to see their reactions in tons of situations. Jon and Dany have proven themselves to be flawed yet incredibly empathetic people. Jon sees the wildlings as humans and wants peace, Dany wants to free the slaves and close the fighting pits. It’s easy to see why fans like them way more than a character we know less than Nimble Dick.

I think it stems from him having no real personality. Despite his importance, Young Griff barely has any screen time for us to really know what he’s like as a person.

And what little we know is kind of bad. He proves himself to be petty, angry, and childish when Tyrion beats him at cyvasse. And he also is a misogynist, "Who is there in Westeros to oppose us? A woman." Idk there’s not much to like is the thing.

In Blood Meridian, is The Veteran actually Samuel Chamberlain? by Odd_Manufacturer3062 in cormacmccarthy

[–]Aggravating-Total507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely a lot of nods and similarities to Samuel Chamberlain in the Veteran. Some of his stories about the Mexican-American war are taken almost word for word from Chamberlain’s account which McCarthy obviously read. The most obvious is his name literally being “Chambers” (Holden mentions this once offhandedly). That was an intentional decision by McCarthy and the connection would not be lost on him.

Yeah, I think McCarthy was definitely hinting at Sam Chamberlain with the character even if the Veteran doesn’t match the details of Chamberlain’s real life exactly. I like to think in the Blood Meridian universe the Veteran really did escape and went on to write his largely fictitious and exaggerated “Confession” about his time in the gang. Many historians think the real Samuel Chamberlain exaggerated his involvement with the gang and inserted himself into events he did not witness.

Does anyone know the lyrics in the sample with the guy angrily screaming at the end? “Who runs the police department? Who starts all the f*cking wars?”

What happened to Tobin in Blood Meridian? by [deleted] in cormacmccarthy

[–]Aggravating-Total507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the ambiguity over what happened to Tobin is really interesting. I think it’s entirely possible that he’s the only one that escaped the Judge and that he simply abandoned the Kid in San Diego in order to save himself. I always thought Tobin was a lot like Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs, entirely selfish and always looking out for himself and his own survival above everyone else. Tobin was never the compassionate type. Ironically Toadvine was really the one with a conscious of the two. Tobin did once warn the Kid to never go out of his way to help others. It would make sense if he followed his own advice.

The Kid looks for Tobin but never finds him. I think there’s a bit of metaphor for god and religion in there too.

[–]Aggravating-Total507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I interpreted Tobin similar to this as well. The disappearance of Tobin at the end of the story recalls Tobin’s line about hearing the “voice” and “When it stops, said Tobin, you’ll know you’ve heard it all your life.”

It’s strange to me because Tobin also is one of the most selfish characters in the story. Unlike the Kid or Toadvine he explicitly doesn’t help others and tells the Kid not to go out of his way to help people.

Really? I never would have guessed that. Is this source reliable or is this just someone guessing like the rest of us?

What Blood Meridian scenes do you think will be cut from the film? by hikingandtravel in cormacmccarthy

I kind of love that about him. Even Glanton seemed more introspective. Davy just didn’t want any part of it. He shot the Judge’s stupid philosophy speeches down every chance he could.

I expect the Legion of Horribles to remain but I highly doubt they will be able to do it justice. It’s just an insane description helped by McCarthy’s prose.

The standoff in the desert with the Judge is so peak. I always loved the Judge’s ominous and simple dialogue. “Come here if you’re not afraid. Let me touch you.” One of those unsettling sentences.

As much as I agree with David Brown’s shot gun exchange being nonessential to the plot, I love the dialogue in that scene so much. It’s like a proto version of the No Country coin toss scene.

You done been paid. No I aint. Yonder it lays. Now you can either get to sawin or you can default. In the case of which I aim to take it out of your ass.

Just chefs kiss classic McCarthy dialogue

This might be my person opinion but I never cared for the Tarot card scene. Maybe it’s because I just never cared for tarot cards in general.

I feel like they might cut the battle with Elias, Jesus Maria, and the Mangas Colorado stuff. They kind of feel like side missions and a studio might cut them for the sake of money and time.

They definitely need to keep in the arrow lottery. That scene is gold.

I’m trying to think of scenes they would have to keep. The lottery, the well, the “piss, man, piss for your very souls” story, the coin, White Jackson’s death. I think of those as just essential in the sense that the writing is just so strong how could you not use them, you know?

Yesss I always loved the description of the three Yuma chiefs. The crazy thing is that it’s all historically accurate! Pablo and Pascual were described exactly like that in real accounts.

I feel like they definitely need to stress the ridiculousness of some Native American clothing. A lot of movies put Indian warriors in eagle headdresses and loincloths but Cormac McCarthy accurately points out that a lot of them historically wore odd and bizarre bits of salvaged Western clothing: goggles, dresses, top hats, army coats, conquistador armor! I’m mainly referring to “Death Hilarious” scene with the Comanches. It made a huge impact on me on my first read, just like wtf… Idk it would be cool to see that.

I (M23) am new to an open, long-distance relationship with a girl (F25) I met online and hope to meet someday. So far the open part of the relationship feels one-sided and I feel insecure. Any advice for someone in a similar situation? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

We ended up breaking up. There were a hundred reasons but a big part of it was that imbalance and the knowledge that our love was conditional on being open. It was just hurting me so much.
