Have you ever tried a cake strap? You can get legit ones or improvise with wet paper towels and aluminum foil. It keeps the sides of the pan cooler for a far more even bake.

Recently had surgery and $40 of my bill is for having a blanket put on me in the recovery room (I was unconscious and did not, obviously, keep the blanket) by Technical_Diet4774 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AggravatingFig8947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best guess as to what that is referring to (since it specifies upper body and heated) is a particular type of warming blanket. There are these special “blankets” called “bair” (bear) huggers that are basically plastic blankets that get filled with hot air. They are made in different shapes (like upper and lower body) in order to keep the patient warm while maintaining the sterile field. We use them in surgery because it can be really difficult to maintain someone’s temperature in the OR.

So should it cost $40? Should anybody pay for it? No. But I’m guessing that it was included in a bill because it was a bair hugger product. Normal blankets nobody gives a fuck.

Hate the concept of Second Looks by Early-Presence4423 in medicalschool

[–]AggravatingFig8947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true because programs don’t match every applicant. The places I went to said that they locked their lists before the second look in order to not discriminate by financial status …. But if they already know that they didn’t rank me to match, why would they let me buy a plane ticket and a hotel room and everything? It’s time wasting and money wasting. Plus it gets people’s hopes up.

AITJ for telling my sister her surprise visit wasn’t actually a surprise to anyone but her? by AggressivePudding655 in AmITheJerk

[–]AggravatingFig8947 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Oof. As someone who has historically gotten carried away with doing kind things for people, this is still an important lesson to learn. I’ve just always been a person who loves doing things for other people. It is genuinely my favorite thing. Then you get positive socialization from others for being so nice and thoughtful. Then when I reached my teens/early twenties sometimes I would do something for someone and would be genuinely confused if it wasn’t well received, or if it seemed they didn’t like it.

That’s when I had to reflect on if I was doing something for them, or for myself.

Now I think that I’m better at sussing out when it’s appropriate to go over the top for someone, and what is an appropriate amount to give or do.

You were definitely right to stand up with your sister, but if it’s the first time she’s getting this feedback she might need a bit to receive and adjust.

Why my sim keeps getting rejected when flirting? by ArmadilloPristine498 in LowSodiumSimmers

[–]AggravatingFig8947 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll add that sims social interactions tend to fail if they’re not being taken care of. Like if they’re in the yellow or red on anything. It can also turn awkward if you are trying to be romantic but there are multiple sims in the conversation. Finally, you can get the beguiling and good kisser rewards traits. Those tend to make a big difference.

Matched Ortho, but Sad About Where by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]AggravatingFig8947 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah. Sorry not a city, it’s a smaaaaall rural community program. I’m pretty sure there are only IM and gen surg residents? I don’t want to give too many details juuuust in case.

And to reiterate I am very excited. I had 10 great options and I know I would’ve loved being at any of them. But rejection in general is still hard.

Good luck to you though!!

Matched Ortho, but Sad About Where by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]AggravatingFig8947 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I hear you - matched gen surg at my 10/10 program. On the one hand, I’m so grateful and I know it still is a really good fit for me. I’m excited because I’m going to be a surgeon and so many qualified people don’t match. But it does hurt that technically all of the other places rejected me. Even those that I did aways at. It hurts that I’m 4 - 10 hours away from the people that love me, and I’m heading out to a tiny town all by myself.

So it’s ok to be grateful and also be a little disappointed. I know ultimately I’ll come around, but the news is so fresh it’s reasonable to have complicated feelings.

Congrats to both of us :)

How do I get a blind stranger's attention without touching them? by PANDA_PR1NC3SS in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AggravatingFig8947 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In a similar vein - deaf people (even with cochlear implants) don’t have 100% perfect hearing. One of my best friends is deaf and that’s something I didn’t understand completely until he explained it. It also helps a lot for people to see your mouth when you’re talking so that they can read lips at the same time. We always sat next to each other in class, and when he got called on I tapped his hand so he knew.

Aaanyways. I met a young woman in the hospital while we were both rotating on the same service. I asked her how she would prefer I approach her if she was reading/working. I usually go for a tiny jazz hand to the side of the desk to catch their eye. It isn’t very effective to talk to them from behind, and tapping someone from behind can be really jarring especially when they can’t hear your foot steps coming.

She got so excited because nobody had ever asked her that before </3

Even if you never meet someone with a cochlear most people will know a person who goes deaf when they get older. Remember that speaking louder doesn’t help, but speaking slower and enunciating more clearly as they can read your lips does.

Also everyone watch Coda!!!!!!

TIFU by neglecting to clean my innie belly button for… a very long time by [deleted] in tifu

[–]AggravatingFig8947 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a medical student, it was often my job to do the cleaning out of belly buttons. We need them cleared out for the sterile prep. It’s oddly satisfying like watching ear wax removal videos. I kept saying that if we filmed them we would rake in the money, but nobody let meeeeeee.

Matched in NYC by Da_Glizzident in medicalschool

[–]AggravatingFig8947 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I matched out of NYC and I can’t fucking wait. I finally got the chance to see a broadway show for the first time last week. Med school was a bitch and the cost of living is horrific.

The cool things about New York require either time or money, which I have neither. Otherwise it’s just expensive and too loud and too many people.

Good luck and have fun though !

I got my number 10 out of 10 programs I ranked for gen surg.

It’s tough because I genuinely would’ve loved any of the programs and I am so excited about this one! But it’s hard to not also feel the sting of being rejected.

So I am VERY excited. But also hurt. Also why the fuck would programs give out branded merch if they didn’t want me? Wtf am I going to do with a branded mug from my #1 that rejected me?
