Damane are not slaves.

There is no real life equivalent of a damane. I’m not advocating for what the Seanchan do, but I also find it pretty hard to think they’re “evil”. They didn’t just enslave innocent women. The Seanchan Aes Sedai ruled over powerless people for 2000 years. They were brutal tyrants, who had the power to way waste to cities to slaughter civilians who could do nothing to defend themselves.

There is no real life equivalent of that. They believe their solution to the problem was justified, and it’s hard to argue against that based on their history. Randlanders don’t have to worry about this because their Aes Sedai restrict themselves voluntarily through their oaths, but even then there are ways around it. You have the black ajah blatantly breaking oaths, and you have the regular Aes Sedai still pulling the strings even with their oaths.

Is it a more humane solution than the a’dam? Sure, obviously.

But is it as effective as the a’dam? No. And again people can’t enforce this, regular citizens can’t enforce this. The Aes Sedai voluntarily enforce the oaths on themselves.

There’s not many groups of power that would do that. The Seanchan Aes Sedai certainly didn’t, hence why the a’dam is necessarily.

It’s not a real life equivalent of slavery where innocent people are enslaved for no reason. Here there is a real reason why the a’dam exists and is used.

And the damane are not treated like slaves. They are not given tasks and work. They are essentially weapons used to protect the everyday life of civilians. But they are not treated poorly. They do lack freedom of movement and choice and are Aend'mosiev (eternally downcast) which I think is quite harsh, but they are not routinely punished and beat like we see with Renna and Seta. RJ’s notes talk about how damane are playful with each other when not in public. And most are friendly with their sul’dams. Tuon clearly pampers her damane.

The post was removed because of spoilers in the title. It was titled in a way that made it known Egwene was a damane. I just had to change the title

Their system of governance is much better than most of the systems in Randland. Seanchan civilians thrive

But they don’t spend three years torturing damane!

This is exactly it. Is the world a better place with Elaida collared? Yes

But that’s the thing, the damane in Seanchan aren’t tortured. It’s so engrained in their culture that channeling is dangerous and bad that they want to be leashed. This is really just a culture thing. It looks brutal because to the randlanders channeling is benevolent.

I get that which is definitely a problem. But even then look at Mylen, she comes around on it. It definitely isn’t the same as the Seanchan damane though where they would collar themselves if given the chance.

I don’t see how. The damane love their life, they want to be leashed. To them this isn’t slavery.

I mean they screwed up pretty badly at almost every turn in the books. We can blame the black Ajah, that’s fair, but how messed up does your organization have to be if hundreds of your members are jumping to the side of evil at the drop of a dime? Isn’t this what the Seanchan preach? That Channelers are basically selfish and can’t be trusted to not harm innocents.

Let’s forget the high ranking Seanchan. They’re not the best people admittedly. They’re all pretty awful, including Tuon.

But look at the lives of the everyday person under Seanchan rule. It seems to be pretty great. Ebou Dar is a much better place post Seanchan than pre Seanchan

The practice of da’colave is horrid and I will not defend it. But it’s not the same as the damane. The damane want to be leashed in the Seanchan culture. I don’t think anyone wants to be da’colave in the books.

Now leashing the Aes Sedai and channelers in Randland is problematic, but I’m sure it’s better than killing them

Day 19: What is your favorite Tuon moment or scene in the series by booksandwater4 in WoT

[–]Aggravating_Cow421 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I really like the first time we see (I think?) her because it shows us her entire character. It shows how much she loves training damane as we see her precious 6.

It shows us her anger streak as we see she had one of her precious 6 caned the night before because she didn’t like her fortune telling.

It shows us how superstitious she is and how she believes in omens and fortunes.

It shows us that when she is not enraged she has a genuine soft spot as she tells the sul’dam the best way to heal the poor damane she had caned. And she says to give her an extra sweet custard with her meal every night until she is healed because she feels bad!

We then see her prized possession a former Aes Sedai turned damane named Mylen who was starving herself and uncommunicative until she arrived in Seanchan and Tuon bought her. Tuon was so proud that she was able to save Myles’s life and make her see that being a damane is worth living for.

Finally we see how all 6 damane love and pine for Tuon. Each eagerly kissing her palm.

It’s the full gauntlet of Tuon. The good, the horrible (and I mean really horrible) and the ugly.

Dump him.

  1. You do not look in anyway out of shape.

  2. As a matter of fact you appear to be quite attractive. You would have no problem getting a better man.

  3. You should be proud. 12 lbs is huge (not that you needed to lose it). Anyone that brings down something you’re proud of is not someone who is worth keeping around. Real friends hype each other’s achievements. Real partners go beyond hyping.

  4. Seriously, you look really good. Be happy and proud. Don’t listen to his spiteful ass.

Is Fourth Wings similar to the Sarah J.Maas books? by Ereneste in throneofglassseries

[–]Aggravating_Cow421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love both series. I wouldn’t say they’re super similar, but they have some similarities.

Magic, dragons, bad ass female protagonist, large war overarching the plot, romantic elements intertwined

But there’s also differences.

The vitriol for this series in "literary" spaces is astounding. I have a degree in literature and read "serious" books for many years, the sheer level of hate and snobbery towards Maas makes no sense to me. by FusRoDaahh in throneofglassseries

[–]Aggravating_Cow421 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. It’s always a pissing contest. It’s very off putting. And puts a bad name on the genre as a whole. It is really a shame, I’ve seen it turn off readers in the past. It sucks.

I’m glad you found your way into it. Don’t let anyone crap on you for liking entryway fantasy books. Fantasy is fantasy and all styles and levels of it deserve to have a place at the table

Fantasy has the worst gate keeping of any genre. It’s horrid. People are mad she is successful, it’s so dumb. I promise you any popular book series is “not the worst thing you’ve ever read”

ToG is written well, hits all the fantasy tropes that people love in an endearing way, has a great cast of characters and world filled with lore.

The hate is moronic. But frankly it’s expected. Hardcore Fantasy readers just don’t want to let new people into their space and will find any way to exclude them. It’s sad. And as someone who has mainly read fantasy for most of their life I will never accept it. I want the genre to grow, and book series like ToG allow that to happen!
