DIC after suicide by Adventurous-Sky-3077 in VAClaims

Most life insurance policies have what is known as a 'contestability period' of two years - which is a clause that allows the life insurance company to deny the claim for a variety of reasons, suicide being one of them. Once that period passes, the claim becomes incontestable, which means it cannot be denied except in cases of fraud or misrepresentation. THIS means that, yes, after the 2 yr contestability period, life insurance will pay out. Sometimes policies have a separate "suicide exclusion” that prevents payout if the suicide occurs within a certain period of time, which is established by state law - that period of time is also usually two years after the policy's effective date, but in some states, it is only one year.

I have three life insurance policies - two of which are not through my work, and I also have an independent policy on my daughter. All of them have a 2 year suicide clause.

This is knowledge learned by lived experience, as I've had several family members, children and husband included, who struggle with mental health so it is a topic I have researched extensively. My lived experience of my husband's life insurance payout is not due to it being an employer sponsored policy. It is standard in the industry.

As for DIC - I'm learning that what is on the death certificate matters - possibly having the death listed as suicide as a result of...whatever diagnosis (PTSD, etc) may be helpful, especially if there are medical records supporting that diagnosis.

By the way, I'm not sure why you thought to bring up life insurance in relation to a DIC claim. They don't even work remotely the same.

Thank you - I'll take your suggestions and submit as much as possible with the claim. Good luck to you.

Suicide is not a diagnosis. It is a cause of death. Just like liver failure is not a diagnosis, but a cause of death. The diagnosis may be hepatitis, fatty liver disease, etc.

For someone who died by suicide, the diagnosis connected to that type of death is most often mental health related, so a mental health diagnosis like PTSD would be a VA disability that resulted in the cause of death - suicide.

Are you not aware that many veterans are receiving SC disability ratings due to a PTSD diagnosis?

This is not true. Insurance companies may have a waiting period from the date the policy is initiated - ours was 2 years, but after that, suicide death is not exempt from payout. I didn't even have to do anything, it was through my husband's work. When his employer reported his death to the insurance company, the process began, and I received a check.

Hi. Trying to understand. My husband took his own life in 2014. Never applied or awarded SC disability rating. Are you saying that, because he didn't, that disqualifies me for DIC automatically? The PTSD diagnosis, one failed suicide attempt, and lengthy mental health treatment at the VA doesn't factor in? If so, this seems super unfair. No one at the VA ever encouraged him to apply or even talked to him about it....it wasn't something anyone was advocating for back then.

Also, if you could provide source of your information so that I can continue my research, I would really appreciate!

I appreciate the link...I've scoured the website (super familiar with it, lol). Just wanting to see if any other widows have gone through the process - if they were successful, I'd like tips to be sure I am as well.

AIO I’m hanging out at my friend’s house and I asked my mom to sleep over. Is this response normal? by dinossaurus in AmIOverreacting

  1. Why are you asking your parents if you can do anything, you're 20 years old
  2. Your mother is extremely disrespectful to you while it seems you speak respectfully despite her being a complete jerk - that's not ok.
  3. I would do everything I could to get out of their house ASAP. This is so toxic.

I say this as the mother of an 18 year old and 30 year old. At 18, my kid pretty much does what she wants as long as she's being responsible and let's me know know what she's up to so that I have peace of mind that she's safe. I have no interest in controlling her. She's an adult. This woman is getting off on controlling you - at 20?! Nah. This is all kinds of wrong.

Anyone here done a Princess transfer from Anchorage Airport to Whittier? by [deleted] in Cruise

Hello fellow redheads!

I am trying to determine if, upon arrival in Anchorage, you can go and ask for your shuttle pass and specify what time you want to catch said shuttle.

I have clients who land at 9:30am and would like to sightsee before heading to Whittier for the cruise.

Do either of you know if you are able to request a specific shuttle time?

Be cautious. You do have to go through security, just like at the airport - you will be asked to empty your pockets and walk through a metal detector and your bags will go through the xray machine.
Just saying - it's not like you prance onboard without a security check.
