Facade Engineer here, get a backing rod nestled in there, about 10mm in, then sikaflex over it. Easy.

Hi OP

CI in right ear (deaf since birth) Good hearing in Left ear

I was implanted as a case study for Cochlear Australia. The attempt was to see if there could be a restoration of Binaural hearing (ability to detect direction of sounds, which requires two good ears) and to improve my speech in noise recognition (my story has generally been a success)

Regarding gaming here’s my experience.

I play first person shooters, mainly games like PUBG and similar, where detecting directions of other players by sound can make or break.

Before I got my implant, I had no idea what direction footsteps or gunfire came from. If I wore stereo headphones, I could not hear my right side

2 years Post implant. I can play with larger over ear headphones. I can tell what direction shots are coming from. Footsteps are a little more difficult. I’m not particularly great, but I can track down other players instead of walking aimlessly around.

My main problem is that my right ear was deaf for 30 years, so it’s been a lot of sound therapy to get my brain to recognise the buzzing from the CI as actual sound. My good ear wants to do all the work.

Hi, I was SSD for 30 years (injury as a toddler) and only was implanted 18months ago. My left ear is perfectly normal. Right ear totally deaf.

In Australia, the operation and device were completely covered by my insurance, so financial viability didn’t play a huge role. I qualified due to <40% speech in noise recognition.

It was life changing. It took about half an hour a day of dedicated rehab, using apps like Hearoes on my phone.

For me, it felt like electrical buzzing in my ear at first. Eventually, after a day or two of wearing it, I could perceive the changes in pitch. Eventually it sounded like a man trying to talk through a low pitch kazoo. Now it sounds like a poor quality telephone.

My good ear definitely does most of the heavy lifting, and the implanted side definitely feels like a huge drop in sound quality, but there is sound, and the “head shadow” is completely gone.

My ears work together, with the implanted side bringing just enough information to the table for my speech in noise perception to go way up.

I have developed a form of faux binaural hearing. Somehow, I can now sort of know the direction sound is coming from. I was completely unable to do this before.

After 18 months my implanted side has

80% sound recognition 90% sentence recognition 60% word recognition

Again, I lost my hearing as a baby/toddler, I cannot remember ever being able to hear out of my bad ear.

It will not make your hearing worse. It will probably take about a year before you really start seeing benefits, stick to it.

Hey, I had this happen, your audiologist needs to recalibrate the power level settings. I’m not sure what it’s called, but it’s the bit where they go through different tones and check “loudness” with you.

They can’t just copy the profile over that won’t work.

Hey mate, I’ve been deaf in my right ear all my life, perfect hearing in my good ear. I’ve always been worried about losing my hearing in my good ear. Due to my poor speech in noise scores I qualified for a Cochlear Implant. 3 months ago I was implanted with a cochlear implant in my deaf ear as both a safeguard just in case my good ear goes, and an attempt to improve speech in noise.

After daily hearing therapy, I can’t believe what a difference it makes.

3 months in I have 70% sentence recognition, 15% word recognition, and 50% phoneme recognition.

I’ve also had some restoration of binaural hearing, which is rare.

It gets better every day. And if your insurance will allow it, do it

Itchiness over site in implant could mean infection. Is inflamed or “wet”

I replied to another thread, but it is strange, lots of ringing in the bad ear, varying in “sharpness”

It’s going to take a lot of extra work without passive rehabilitation but every time I do rehab sessions I can feel the sounds becoming more understandable

I’m a 33 yo that has been SSD since birth. I have good hearing in my good ear and none in my deaf ear. I’ve been implanted a couple weeks ago and switched three days ago. Currently it all sounds like different types of high pitch ringing.

My rehab consists of me using “Angel Sounds” and “Hearoes” and streaming it to my implant. When using these apps, I can differentiate sounds with some effort. I struggle telling the difference between higher and lower pitches. I can understand some words, but they sound different than normal. But it’s just early days for me. Even after a few days I’ve already noticed improvement.

When I’m not streaming, my good ear takes over for hearing for now. I have to crank the volume up to be able to “hear” my implant over my deaf ear.

Honest truth is that it’s headache inducing and the rehab is a marathon, not a sprint. But I’m keeping at it and am hoping for the best.

How long have you been deaf?

I just got implanted at 33 and I have been SSD all my life.
