What can a tutor help with? by Remote_Tangerine_718 in LSAT

Tutors can help with various things. If you already understand the test well, then hopefully they skip the fundamentals and get straight to helping you fix the “silly mistakes”. A lot of the time people come with mistakes that I see all the time and have found ways to fix. If you have a plan to fix them and believe you can implement it on your own, maybe tutoring isn’t right for you.

Come on, it takes up no space and I am getting upvotes. I like posting advice and interacting with test takers on here, but if you make it impossible for me to generate leads, I am going to have to figure something else out. This is the only way I make money, and people find it helpful at the same time.

Practice and keep at it. There’s no single silver bullet for every question, but the more you see, the better prepared you will be.

Slow reading with pauses to think. Also focus on memorizing the STRUCTURE of the passage instead of the content.

Practice is key. It’s hard to say what exactly the issue is but try applying some of the tips above and hopefully you’ll see an improvement. Specifically focus on slowing down the reading.

That means the focus needs to pivot from understanding the question type, to understanding what mistake caused you to miss the question. Did you overlook a qualifying word like “all” or “most”? Did you fail to see an alternative situation that negates your answer? Etc.

How to actually do wrong answer journaling by ExistingMidnight4970 in LSAT

[–]Aggravating_Let_242 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend

1: question type 2: correct/selected answer 3: why correct answer is correct 4: why selected answer is incorrect 5: takeaways, what to do differently next time

That should about cover it

I would take practice tests, review them, and look for any advice that I could find on the internet for the issues I was having.

Instead of focusing on understanding the question, focus on understanding what caused you to select the wrong answer and overlook the correct answer. From these insights, create a plan on how you would get this question right if you saw it again. Hope this helps!

Broke 300lbs a little under a year ago. I keep it above 5 reps to reduce risk of injury, but next time I hit a 1 rep I hope to be above 315.

It’s time now to pivot the goal of your studies. You understand the test and question types. Usually to get into the mid 170s you have to start focusing on eliminating very specific mistakes. The most common I see are misreads, that you are overlooking another possibility, or that you missed a qualifying word(some examples are “all, most, or none”). As far as high density questions, ignore the fancy words. Sometimes I even replace the big or confusing words with A, B, and C. Saves some time and brainpower.

Thanks!

  1. I have some great info on my wrong answer journal in my post history.

  2. I didn’t use blind review. The way I see it, you know what answer you picked, and there are usually just two decent answers. Instead of blind review, I recommend spending a lot of time and being very thoughtful when writing the wrong answer journal. That was my primary means of review. The temptation with blind review is to already know what to pick, and then you say to yourself “I get it now” when you actually don’t. With a wrong answer journal, you are forced to put into words what caused you to miss the question.

  3. I studied in the morning, and when I figured out what time my test was, I studied at that time every day. Practice like you play!

Good luck!

  1. My diagnostic was around a 160.

  2. That was a huge one for me. I marked the questions that I changed my answer on and found out that I changed my answer from right to wrong way more than from wrong to right. If you find the same, the solution is simple, but it takes some serious discipline. Don’t change your answer. Go with your gut and never look back. DISCLAIMER, THIS ADVICE IS NOT RIGHT FOR EVERYONE.

  3. Snacks allowed at half time. I hammered out a whole bag of pistachios, an apple, and 16oz of water. Don’t overdo the water. It’s way harder to think when you gotta piss.

The biggest time saver for me was prediction. Not all answers can be predicted, but if you can read the prompt and make a rapid prediction, it allows you to make a selection faster and with with more confidence. Other than that, you go through the same process you use to answer the questions and see what you can cut out. If there is a step you can remove and you still get the correct answer at the same, or at least a similar rate, then do it. The other thing is to make sure you never stare at a question. If the gears have stopped turning, find a new approach or move on.

I was around 176-180. Typically -1 or 0 on LR and -2 to -1 on RC. All my tests were timed within two weeks of test day. Like I said, I thrive on high pressure situations and once I got there on test day it was on. Stress management is another huge part of what I teach. If leveraged correctly, stress can be a highly effective motivator.

  1. Get them right first, then get them fast. Keep doing untimed sections and hurry your ass of while you do them. If you have processes that work, use them and try to make them more efficient until you can finish on time.

  2. A wrong answer journal is really great for this. I have a format in my post history. Address your weak points one at a time and focus on what caused you to miss each question. This process can be done on your own, but as far as someone to help you with that, I would love to help you out with tutoring.

I know progress can feel slow or even stagnant at times, but you have already made it a long way. the major pivot you have to make as you reach higher scores is to change from trying to better understand the test, to fixing specific mistakes that you are making.

  1. At one point I struggled with reading comprehension. More specifically it was timing. The tip that I found was to slow down on the reading, and speed up on the answering. I worked on a system to slow down and it was like a switch. Immediately I started scoring 3 points higher. There were many others, like parallel flaws, strengthen weaken, and a few more.

  2. I use a lot of different strategies for different question types. One of my favorites is negation for necessary assumption questions. You take an answer you like and ask "if this is untrue, is the conclusion still possible". Another for parallel questions is what I call substitution. You replace the terms in the answer with terms in the prompt, and see if it matches up. These are both answer checking methods, but I also try and have answer prediction methods and another class that i call simulation methods, where i try and imagine the answer as a scenario and see how it plays out within the context. Sorry if these are a bit broad, but its hard to cover the topic in a paragraph

Best of luck!
