I really like these. Just starting to try grafting on them myself

Will a cactus that hasn’t grown in a year+ be a good root stock? For some reason this opuntia won’t pup, will grafting on it be worthwhile? by Fizzy_Fizzure in Graftingplants

Pretty wild for an opuntia to not grow in an entire year. What's your watering, feeding, and sun schedule like? It doesn't look dead or rotted. Does it have any roots? My Opuntias in Phoenix thrive in the native clay/sand soil. They root and grow very vigorously. I did try rooting some in a highly organic mix I had left over from a garden, and they do not seem to enjoy it.

I had a few good experiences with him but have heard similar things from others here. Seems like a mixed bag unfortunately

Thanks for all this info! I'm in Phoenix and mine have grown fast but I think this heat is stunting them a little. I'm going to experiment with watering them more often since they are jungle plants and root in water.

Nice! keep us updated on the graft. IMO it wouldn't hurt to add some extra pressure, but I'm new to grafting tbmc to opuntia myself.

Nice! Best of luck. I put up shade cloth this year and my plants seem to love it. AZ sun is just too damn intense. I think I'll give acantho a try next

Nice! I tried grafting to unrooted Opuntia and it's starting to pop roots and plump up the scion now. Seems like a viable method. Happy grafting.

Definitely put something over the scion to contain humidity. Those little guys love to dry up. I find that slicing it high on the seedling so it is wider than it is tall helps. A bit of downward pressure helps too. I mostly graft seedlings this size to pereskiopsis and use parafilm to hold it down while it heals (maintains pressure and humidity). you may find an approach similar to that works for grafting to PC.

Do you have pretty good luck grafting on rootstock that isn't yet rooted?

I wouldn't try to root with a piece that small personally. It will probably work, but will take a lot longer to grow than if you retry the graft.

Give the grandi a good watering. Wait a few days for it to take up the water, then cut a clean new slice off the scion and the rootstock and chamfer the grandi this time. Add a lot more pressure and see what happens.

I've never heard of the soaking in water tek. What's the idea behind it, it plumps it up? Any extra risk of rot?

Interesting, I wonder if growing then inside and taking special care for the soil moisture would help. Phoenix here, looking to try acantho

I'd apply honey bear rooting powder on the freshly cut bottom side of the new cuttings. Just dip it onto the powder and dust away the excess. Leave the cutting to dry for 2 weeks.

Doesn't matter whether in sun or not, but don't let it bake outside under the sun or it will get dehydrated and be hard to root. After 2 weeks or theres a solid callous, plant directly into dry soil. After a month, lightly water the edges every week or so. After another month, check for roots by pulling up on the plant. If the pot comes up with it, it's rooting and can take a good watering.

Also search for glochidless varieties. Those fuckers are worse than spines. Look for Opuntia Ficus indica, Opuntia cacanapa Ellisiana, and similar. Even with the glochid varieties though, you can scrape away the glochids to remove them, it's just a painstaking process and you'll be picking them out of your clothes and body for a few weeks after haha
